"The Forest Woman" (Die Waldfrau) ), 1901 – Otto Modersohn.
every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.

And to all the Gods of literature, poetry, and creativity. I thank you; because I wouldn’t have made it otherwise.

Currently rewatching In The Mouth of Madness, in honor of Sam Neill’s passing . One of my favorite movies. RIP.
To put it more directly, what is mutual in mutual aid is not in the goods and services delivered; it's in the underlying belief in the deep connections between those who give and those who receive. It is a deep belief in and commitment to inseparability: that my well-being is inseparable from yours and that, in caring for yours, I care for myself and, more than that, for the larger whole that is us, because we are in this together. That is, we are not mutual because of the exchange of aid; we aid each other because we are already mutual.

In the beginning of practice, synchronicity is often described as feeling something like falling into madness, losing touch with reality, or touching magic.
Long after a plateau and several dark nights, I would like to report synchronicities feeling more like touch stones, anchors to reality, reassurance in there still being any paths at all to be seen amidst the massive storms we reside in.
sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.
ditto cockney accents being used to denote stupid and evil. why are you acting like someone who talks like a member of the working class is irredeemable and an idiot.
I think one of the really interesting things about reading sci fi and fantasy (including fanfiction) is realizing how pro-monarchy and pro-imperialism so much of it is.
There is an amazingly strong thread of "monarchies/empires are good as long as they are led by the right person" and even "as long as the right person is in charge it's better to do away with all of those pesky advisors/other people with power who keep making the wrong decisions."
I think as a writer there is also a tension between "I am writing a monarchy or an imperial system" which is not in itself necessarily pro-monarchy or pro-imperialism, or even writing protagonists taking part in said system, and writing a story that is in itself pro-monarchy or pro-imperialism.
It's not always easy to tell where the line is, and not everyone is going to have the same line, but a few of the things that I often see that imho tip over that line from "this is portraying a system" to "this is presenting an (often uncritical) argument for that system" are:
The consolidation of power to a single monarch/benevolent dictator being presented uncritically as a good thing
Some cultures being presented as unambiguously bad and the takeover/forced external change of that culture by the protagonist's side being presented uncritically as a good thing
The replacement of a bad absolute monarch with a "good" absolute monarch being presented uncritically as a good thing
Narrative support for repressive tactics against a citizenry by the government
Narrative support for the divine right of kings or some other version of a magically/divine "true" monarch who "should" be in charge and is better at leading simply by virtue of their heritage/magic (particularly when the character is shown to have some magic instinct for leadership tied directly to said heritage/magic)
Narrative support for imperialism or taking over other countries as "saving" them
Let the Spirits who made the road before your feet set the stone firm beneath your step. No crooked tongue shall guide you, no hidden hand shall turn you aside. Let the light of the Insight go before you like the morning sun, and let the shadow of the Discernment stand behind you like a wall of stone. If any would lead you into thorns, let their words falter and fall to dust. If any would hide their face in deceit, let their mask break and their name be known. What is crooked shall be made straight. What is hidden shall be brought into the day. As mist flees the rising sun, so let false friends depart from you. Blessed is your road and wise be your counsel. Your path is kept, you steps are guarded, and only those who walk in truth shall remain beside.
- a blessing charm for clarity and protection from false friends
Still one of my favorite and most effective charms I have ever written. When I initially performed it, it was done just be reading the charm. No extras. The effects were absolutely notable.
