It seems like the title of an onion article, but itâs actually very serious. A study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that hurricanes with feminine names killed significantly more people than hurricanes with masculine names. The authors looked at several decades of hurricane deaths (excluding extreme outliers like Katrina and Audrey) and posed a question:Â
Do people judge hurricane risks in the context of gender-based expectations?
According to their study, the answer is a big yes.
Laboratory experiments indicate that this is because hurricane names lead to gender-based expectations about severity and this, in turn, guides respondentsâ preparedness to take protective action.
In other words, because of some deep-seated perceptions of gender, people are less afraid of hurricanes with feminine names. And that means they are less likely to evacuate.

Circus Tree: Six individual sycamore trees were shaped, bent, and braided to form this.
how the hell do you bend and braid a tree
Actually pretty easy. Trees donât reject tissue from other trees in the same family. You bend the tree to another tree when it is a sapling, scrape off the bark on both trees where they touch, add some damp sphagnum moss around them to keep everything slightly moist and bind them together. Then wait a few years- The trees will have grown together. You can use a similar technique to graft a lemon branch or a lime branch or even both- onto an orange tree and have one tree that has all three fruits. Frankentrees.
As a biologist I can clearly state that plants are fucking weird and you should probably be slightly afraid of them.
On that note! At the university (UBC) located in town, the Agriculture students were told by their teacher that a tree flipped upside down would die. So they took an excavator and flipped the tree upside down. And itâs still growing. But the branches are now the roots, and the roots are now these super gnarly looking branches. Be afraid.
But Vi, how can you mention that and NOT post a picture? D:

Thousand-yard stare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The thousand-yard stare or two-thousand-yard stare is a phrase coined to describe the limp, blank, unfocused gaze of a battle-weary soldier, but the symptom it describes may also be found among victims of other types of trauma. A characteristic of post-traumatic stress disorder, the despondent stare reflects dissociation from trauma.
The phrase was popularized after Life magazine published the painting Marines Call It That 2,000 Yard Stare by World War II artist and correspondent Tom Lea, although the painting was not referred to with that title in the 1945 magazine article. The painting, a 1944 portrait of a Marine at the Battle of Peleliu, is now held by the United States Army Center of Military History, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. About the real-life Marine who was his subject, Lea said:
He left the States 31 months ago. He was wounded in his first campaign. He has had tropical diseases. He half-sleeps at night and gouges Japs out of holes all day. Two-thirds of his company has been killed or wounded. He will return to attack this morning. How much can a human being endure?
When recounting his arrival in Vietnam in 1965, then-Corporal Joe Houle said he saw no emotion in the eyes of his new squad: âThe look in their eyes was like the life was sucked out of them.â Later learning that the term for their condition was the 1,000-yard stare, Houle said, âAfter I lost my first friend, I felt it was best to be detached.â
A mother helicopter tends to her newborn.
I wish youâd do some research before just spouting out any old crap. If you took two seconds just to LOOK at the picture, youâd see that itâs not a mother and her newborn. You can tell from the size and position of the rotors that itâs actually a hunting male. Also itâs a commonly known fact that whilst all helicopters are born with red tails, this fades to white in males, by the time theyâve reached adulthood. In females, the red has changed to a deep brown.
So this isnât a lovely picture of caring parenting - in fact, this young âcopterâs mother is probably dead, herself. There would be no way sheâd leave her baby by itself at such a young age. The poor thing likely died mere moments after this picture was taken.
Have some respect.
You ignorant fool. The common Red Tailed Boeing youâre basing your analysis on is endemic to Saudi Arabia, which has no climate zones even remotely resembling that in the picture. Helicopters being short range vehicles, thereâs no way a Red Tail could be present in the picture above. What youâre seeing is the red tailed variety of the Arboreal Russian UTair, which youâd know if you so much as looked at the distinctive markings on the parentâs flank. The photo is a mother tending to her newborn as I stated, and you Sir have defamed the endangered helicopter with your inept observations. People like you who think Helicopters are dangerous hunting animals are why these noble beasts have been scrapped to near extinction. Arguments like yours are used to support the helicopter âbladingâ industry, in which millions of helicopters every year are deprived of their rotor blades and left to die of oil loss or starvation. Support your local anti-blading protest group, and donât listen to people like metalheadadam, if thatâs even your real tumblr url.

As someone who wants to study the human consciousness I found this very interesting.
Scott Routley was a âvegetableâ. A car accident seriously injured both sides of his brain, and for 12 years, he was completely unresponsive.
Unable to speak or track people with his eyes, it seemed that Routley was unaware of his surroundings, and doctors assumed he was lost in limbo. They were wrong.
In 2012, Professor Adrian Owen decided to run tests on comatose patients like Scott Routley. Curious if some âvegetablesâ were actually conscious, Owen put Routley in an fMRI and told him to imagine walking through his home. Suddenly, the brain scan showed activity. Routley not only heard Owen, he was responding.
Next, the two worked out a code. Owen asked a series of âyes or noâ questions, and if the answer was âyes,â Routley thought about walking around his house. If the answer was âno,â Routley thought about playing tennis.
These different actions showed activity different parts of the brain. Owen started off with easy questions like, âIs the sky blue?â However, they changed medical science when Owen asked, âAre you in pain?â and Routley answered, âNo.â It was the first time a comatose patient with serious brain damage had let doctors know about his condition.
While Scott Routley is still trapped in his body, he finally has a way to reach out to the people around him. This finding has huge implications.

WHY IS EVERYONE NOT LOSING THEIR SHIT ABOUT THIS
What a fucking nightmare, just kill me.
I know a girl who was hit by a drunk driver and in that state for a year. When she woke up the first thing she did was tell off the doctor who tried to convince her mom to pull the plug. She heard *everything* while being called brain dead.
