Been a while since I've discussed Pokemon anime fandumb on here but... If you criticize Iris for bantering with Ash rather than worshipping every picometer of the ground he walks on, you're placing ADULT social standards on a 10 YEAR OLD girl, let that sink in!!
Why I say this, BECAUSE KIDS TEASE EACH OTHER GOD DAMNIT!! Kids don't generally swoon over their friends and refuse to call out their friends on their errors unless there are in some toxic "in-crowd" or something. I work with kids in my spare time, a handful of them being the same age as the anipoke main characters, and I'll just say whether you people like it or not that their behavior is much more resemblant of Iris than Serena, and the child care professionals that I work with don't deem that behavior as "bad", BECAUSE IT ISN'T, IT'S JUST KIDS BEING KIDS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!
My point is that Serena's behavior towards Ash and in general is very unrealistic for a kid her age. Yes, kids have crushes. Yes, some kids are child prodigies in certain areas. But when it comes to Serena... Let's see: Everyone she has interacted with likes her (besides TR and TF but they're evil teams so pfftt), she is talented at every "girly" activity, she is pretty, she has an ideal female body shape, she has a good temperament and good manners... TL:DR Serena is like the "ideal" that lots of people expect for girls. And listen, I can't speak for EVERY kid that's seen Pokemon XY, but for me personally and for many others that I've spoken to, Serena was not relatable to us as young kids. I personally found characters like Bonnie more relatable and endearing than Serena. Honestly, I was shocked when I found out that Serena was supposed to be 10 in the anime!!
And before people come after me, I am aware of Serena's whole arc with her mother. Here's the thing, I'm sure that arc was relatable to a good amount of the audience, but that still doesn't take away the fact that Serena is a mary-sue. There, I said it!!
It's important to understand that when judging the pokegirls, we're looking at PRE-TEENS, not adults!! So the next time someone is seen hating so hard on Iris but worshipping Serena, just remember that they are hating so vitriolically on NORMAL kid behavior while fawning over an example of unrealistic, and somewhat sexist standards set for young girls. Serena isn't some goddess, she's just a fictional pre-teen given everything that weirdos want to see in girls her age. I know that these are fictional characters at the end of the day but worshipping Serena and hating on other female characters for not being like her is a reflection of one's harmful standards and expectations for young girls.
