(this is so fucking long I need to stop)
I found 2 more instances of Claude mentioning living with Danny when discussing the Rangers-Flyers shootout:
This Courier Post article (published April 10, 2020)
[Danny’s quote is also included because I really enjoyed the contrast of Danny’s serious technical answer vs Claude’s ‘Danny and I were talking and laughing 😄. We were living together 🥰’ answer.]
And this video from April 2026, where he says:
(0:54) "I was pretty nervous, I remember– I lived with Danny Briere that year and we were talking the night before it was like 'what happens if we go to shootouts? Like that’s gonna be– that would be crazy.'"
As far as I could find, the 2019 Spittin’ Chiclets interview was the earliest mention, so I think it’s debatable whether these statements further support pre-2010/11 roommateship or if they just show that this has become his go-to media answer when asked about this subject. HOWEVER.
At the virtual reunion livestream (on May 7, 2020) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Flyers 2010 Stanley Cup run, there is a lengthy conversation about the shootout (starting at around 8:08 in the video). Notably, this exchange occurs:
Steve Coates: I gotta flip back to the day before because I know a couple of gentlemen on this call right now, Claude and Danny and JVR, were part of a meeting, along with Richards and Carter that they had with Joey Mullen to talk about the shootout.
Danny Briere: Well yeah, I remember we showed up at the rink the day before for practice and Lavy took the five of us to watch shootouts that the Rangers had been in… he wanted us to pick a move and practice it at the end of practice before the game. He had a hunch that we might end up in a shootout, the Rangers were very comfortable playing a defensive game and that’s exactly what happened but coming down the next day I knew exactly what I was gonna do all along. I think G is the one that changed his move as he’s coming down, he said [Claude and Danny exchange smiles], but I had my move selected the day before and I stuck with it, I just had to make it work.
SC: So Danny scored, I think it was Erik Christensen that tied it [he later corrects himself, as it was PA Parenteau who scored], and G gave the Flyers the lead. Did you know G, what you were gonna do the whole way? Or is Danny right, did you change your mind on the way in?
Claude Giroux: Yeah, I definitely changed my mind... [explains his shootout strategy but it's not narratively relevant in this context]
To me, the 2020 livestream conversation adds credibility to the Briere-house-night-before anecdote because if it had been an incorrect memory (like if he was misremembering a conversation with the team about the possibility of a shootout as a conversation between him and Danny), presumably, he wouldn’t say it again in the 2026 interview??
Therefore, I would like to propose what I think is the most likely scenario given the above evidence:
Situationship Spring 2010 (Claude's statements from 2019 onward are true with the caveat that the roommateship had not been made Official yet): discussing shootouts at practice with team → further discussions between Claude and Danny together after practice that night at the Briere household because that’s where Claude spends all his time and, like, he probably stays over as well → as time passes and blurs, Claude forgets when the roommateship became official and cites the April 10 conversation as being ‘when they were living together’
Some alternative scenarios I came up with but that I think are far less likely (although are still fascinating and tasty in their won way) (I’m sure there is a boring explanation, but I could not easily think of one)
Secret Roommates Spring 2010 (Claude’s statements from 2019 onward are true): he and Danny start living together some time during the 2009/10 season but lie to the media about the timeline in 2011 because, idk, it would be weird for Claude to have moved in halfway through the season
2019 Claude is engaging in self-RPF v1 (the night-before anecdote is true but they were definitively not living together): discussing shootouts at practice with team -> further discussions with Danny at the Briere house (in a bro way) → Claude goes home to his apartment alone (or maybe he stays over, but it's not, like, a habit) → sometime over the next 9 years he fabricates a memory of having been living with Danny at the time
2019 Claude is engaging in self-RPF v2 (the whole night-before anecdote is a false memory): discussing shootouts at practice with team and maybe also one-on-one with Danny → Claude goes home to his apartment alone → sometime over the next 9 years he fabricates a memory of having been living with Danny at the time and having that conversation at the Brioux house
