Look who is making a big debut at the Phoenix Zoo! This little kori bustard chick hatched at the end of July and is now just over two weeks old! Kori bustards are the largest flying bird in Africa once fully grown, but unfortunately their wild populations are steadily decreasing. They face many threats in the wild, including habitat degradation, hunting and collisions with power lines. The Phoenix Zoo has been working with kori bustards since 1984 and has successfully raised 19 of these birds in that time. This newest chick is being hand-raised by zookeepers and is taken on walks around the Zoo multiple times a day for exercise. This helps ensure its legs grow strong and straight and also helps the chick adjust to the many sights and sounds at the Zoo. This also means you have the chance to meet the chick during your next visit to the Zoo! The chick is usually walked once in the morning and once again in the middle of the day. If you’d like to see the chick check in with our guest services staff when you arrive and they will be able to find out when and where the next walk will occur. Please note that times change daily. The chick lives in a behind-the-scenes area as is not available for public view when not on walks. Keepers will be taking the chick out for walks for another month or so, until it gets too big to walk in public areas. Baby birds do grow fast so be sure to come out soon!
