Scared!Pastel!Dan is guilted by a friend to enter a haunted housePhil doesn’t want to hurt anyone but is guilted by a friend to terrify people in a haunted house. He feels horrible when Dan’s friends leave him there to cry on the floor after the scare and comfort ensues.

“Come on, we can’t invite the crybaby.” Aaron complained, shaking his head and rolling his eyes.

“But think about how funny it would be! It’s just a harmless haunted house. He’ll get over it. I promise.” Neal poked at his friend who sighed in agitation.

“It’s just going to be annoying but…he’s your friend so if you want to bring him I guess I can’t stop you.”

Neal slapped Aaron’s back in victory and grinned. “It’ll be funny, trust me. Besides, he’s been begging me to invite him out places.”

Aaron raised an eyebrow. “I thought he hated people. And going outside for that mater.”

“He does. The other day he told me that he’s trying to ‘get out of his shell’ and ‘widen out’ or something. He’s desperate to people please.”

“Whatever. You’re the babysitter though.”

Dan’s POV

One of Dan’s hands played with the strap of his overalls as he leaned anxiously against the wall outside the classroom. His other hand was balled into a fist inside the sleeve of his lavender sweater as he stared at the floor. He nervously tightened and untightened his hold on the soft fabric, aware of the occasional stare someone sent his way. They must be wondering why he looked so terrified. If someone asked, he wouldn’t have been able to explain though. Dan always felt this way. He was especially terrified today though.

Phils a doctor, Dans a patient.

when murderbot had just borked its governor module, it was, for the first time, confronted with decisions like "can i help this person, or will that give me away?" and "if i follow this order (in order to protect my secret) and something bad happens, is it my fault because i could have said no?" it was constantly having to weigh the wellbeing of its clients against its own safety, right?

enter sanctuary moon, a world full of humans for whom mb is not in any way responsible. mb can't get attached (read: doesn't want to get attached) to real-life humans in part because bad things can happen to them, things that maybe mb could have prevented. the same is not true of fictional characters! whatever happens to them onscreen isn't mb's job to fix. whatever happens to them can't be on mb's conscience. media is a safe place for mb because, among other reasons, mb can't affect the narrative and therefore nothing that happens in the show is its fault. at a time when mb was being faced with all sorts of horrible moral dilemmas, media gave it a way to care about the wellbeing of humans without the moral dilemmas.

okay so taking this a step further. i think it's kinda funny that mb thinks art is such a baby for being upset when fictional characters die. art isn't used to being powerless, bud! art isn't used to weighing the benefit of saving somebody against the risk of being sold for parts. "people die and there's nothing i could do about it even if i wanted to" might be a nice bit of freedom for you, but art is stuck on the "people die" part. in art's world, it can make sure people don't die because it has that kind of power over its environment and not all that much to fear from exerting that power.

A Light & His Soul Snatcher (ao3) - natigail

Summary: Phil was the most powerful magic wielding human of the decade, even when he was just a child. He was what his people called a light - someone that was a pure source of magic. He’d been forbidden to leave his house because his parents were terrified that he’d attract soul snatchers, which was horrible creatures that consumed innocent souls.
