April 21 aurora at Beiseker by John Andersen Via Flickr: I am fortunate to have been out to see 3 G2 storms this year April 21 was amazing. Solar Storms are classed by intensity G1 is a minor storm at high latitudes G3 is a moderate storm and a show that is visible into the northern/middle USA. The KP index is a separate solar scale Kp 5 = G1 KP 6+=G2 KP7-8 =G3. KP 3 is just visible on the horizon at latitude 51N where I live.
