the general concept came from thinking about shane kneeling for ilya not for his comfort & self soothing, but for ilya’s. like how in the cottage he crouched down and put his face in ilya’s emotional support crotch, but flip the intention. Ilya’s having a (so far unspecified) bad time in this one, he’s stressed and scared and whatever it is it’s so far out of his control it hurts but! shane is never far out of his control, he can offer a little of piece of that back so he silently kneels by his feet and lets ilya keep him there and doesn’t move until ilya’s regulated again and releases him. it takes the weight out of ilya’s mind and grounds him bc he loves shane, he loves his submission, he loves proof that there is something in life he can handle gently and do right and it makes him feel so so good

so he’s just standing in a grocery store like: is 2 minutes of hand on ilya’s back normal or is that insane. is that nothing. is that divorce behavior. & then two aisles later he’s just absentmindedly mouthing at ilya’s throat in the cereal section like they’re back in a marriott at 1am and someone’s uber is outside in six minutes and they r running out of time again even though they’re not

He and Shane have been falling asleep on FaceTime for months while Ilya was curled up tight around a pillow, Shane’s voice in his ear and blurred imagine on his screen as he dreamed of the warmth and smell and feel of Shane under his hands. He’d been looking forward to this for almost three months. Where the fuck was his Shane. Half asleep and frowning hard Ilya tumbles out of his bed, they are at his since it had been a home match in Boston. He scratches at the low of his stomach as he muffles a yawn and with one eye squinted stumbles towards the ensuite. The light is pushing out the bottom of the door and it makes Ilya wince, but his stomach turn hopefully that he will find his shane there.

He pushes open the door, and sees Shane there, handsome and just in sweats stood by the sink, hands under the water because of course Shane washes his hands so thoroughly after a middle of the night piss. Ilya loves him so much, the sight of his back makes his chest fucking ache. The distance between them seems ridiculous. Shane is turning toward him now, eyes half shut, voice a low rumbled sound, heavy with sleep.

“Baby? Wasswrong?” Shane asks, and he’s drying off his hands, half a step towards Ilya before Ilya is already there, arms wrapping around the low of Shane’s waist, squeezing him to his chest to tight it lifts his feet up off the tiles and makes him grunt.

Shane’s hand smooths the back of Ilya’s sleep hot curls and his arms wrap around him and he’s so warm and lovely and strong in Ilya’s arms. So real. Ilya wants to sink his teeth into him.

“Okay?” Shane asks, and he’s tucking his face into Ilya’s neck, rubbing a sleep rosey cheek into Ilya’s neck, jaw, hand massaging at his scalp.

“You were gone” Ilya grumbles back, as if Shane had committed the worst act possible. An act of warfare.

“Had to piss” Shane sighs, nips at Ilyas earlobe.

“Missed you” Ilya whispers, a tiny confession, and he feels Shane’s arms tighten around him, wrapping around his neck.

“Then take me back to bed baby” Shane asks, lets Ilya lift him up, it’s easy, a slide of hands and he’s against Ilya’s chest, hands under Shane’s thighs, walking them back to his bed.

Ilya lays shane on the bed first, climbs in and pulls the covers up up over them and lays himself overtop of Shane. “Stay” Ilya gruffs, an instruction, and bites at Shane’s chin, jaw, shoves his hand down Shane’s sweats and feels Shane’s hand in his hair, slowly combing through, over and over.

“Just like this” shane agrees, fingers at the back of Ilya’s neck. Shane’s heartbeat, strong and steady under his cheek, the smell of him, warm and slightly of sweat, of the soap he’d washed his hands with.

And Shane is obviously extremely strict about the dog's obedience training - this dog is so well trained he doesn't even beg for table scraps because he knows that's not allowed. The dog's diet is meticulous, his schedule is like clockwork. He's not allowed on the couches, CERTAINLY not on the bed. He puts Anya to shame with his absolutely perfect behaviour. And Shane gets genuinely pissed at Ilya when he tries to sneak his dog unregulated treats because You're going to confuse him and derail his training, Ilya!! But it doesn't even matter because the dog doesn't take the treats - he worships Shane, he knows who he belongs to, and he won't take a treat that Shane hasn't allowed him to have.

One day while researching activities Shane can do with his dog to tire him out, Shane discovers agility comeptetions. And Shane gets fixated on training his dog for these agility courses. Coaching children? No no, Shane is now this dog's personal coach. He is working this dog to the bone, he is training it like a MACHINE, they are winning competitions like crazy it is NUTS. And every so often, Ilya raises his concern that maybe Shane is getting a little too into it, but Ilya doesn't understand - Shane's dog is a winner. He HAS to compete.

And then during one of these competitions, Shane's dog fumbles the last leg of the course. He comes in second place. And it shouldn't be possible for this dog to understand that he's competing against other dogs, let alone that he didn't win, but somehow this dog is still slinking over all deferential towards Shane after his mistake, all big brown eyes, so desperately sorry, so totally dependent on Shane's approval, that Shane,,, kind of has a breakdown. He's weeping while he holds his dog in his arms and like, reassures him that he's a good boy, he's the best boy, that he knows he tried so so hard and that Shane is so very proud of him, a stupid ribbon doesn't even matter, Shane loves him so so much.

and when shane inevitably starts pushing his hips into ilya's hand, whispering "fuck me, please. please please fuck me. ilya" ilya will shake his head and hold shane tighter and say "I want to watch you" and shane will shiver all over and close his eyes, overwhelmed. he'll let ilya have it. let him just see. the flush that draws to the surface of his skin. the furrow of his brow that makes it look like there's nothing more serious in the world than his pleasure—which ilya believes, wholeheartedly. the wet, warm cave of his mouth as he pants and moans. occasionally, when ilya can bring himself to look down and away from shane's face: the appearance and disappearance of ilya's shiny fingers from and into shane's body, between his strong parted thighs, below his swollen beating cock.

but always always ilya will look up when shane is coming. shane's face in the moments he knows nothing but pleasure is the most beautiful sight in the world to ilya.

Yeah, he gets some heart palpitations and anxiety on the days he has to take 30 or 40 mg in one sitting, but that’s better than the Weird Dreams he gets on higher doses of benadryl. He met the hat man once and he’s not interested in doing it again, especially after the hat man made it clear he was not a fan of hockey.

And if he pre-doses with some reditabs before Mango Time followed by a couple afterwards with a benadryl top up that’s absolutely no one’s business but his.

P.S. Do not be like Shane. Do not do this. It is not worth it. You will regret it. (Eggplant parmesan, I miss you and love you. You are like my husband who has gone on a long sea voyage I know he won’t return from. But we are simply not compatible no matter how many drugs I take.)

Imagine Ilya stays in Boston, so the rivalry is still going full strength, but through interviews people slowly start to realise that these two are even more unhinged about each other than previously thought, like toxic soulmates unhinged.

Shane is doing an interview in his house, maybe because however much he tries to deny it he does have both real estate and voyeurism kinks, and this is a way to subtly exercise those while showing off for his boyfriend, and midway through the interview the door just opens and Ilya walks halfway in before realizing there is an entire fucking camera crew in the living room. And they prepared for this because it is Shane and Ilya who are both hyper competent planners who have had to manage massive secrets for years.

So Shane just kind of yells out, “I told you not to break into my house this afternoon Rozanov, I’m in the middle of something.”

And Ilya just calls back while walking out, “Sorry, I will come back later, have fun being boring with your weak backhand.”

When the interviewer asks about it, Shane just says, completely deadpan, “of course Rozanov has the code to my house, and will sometimes just randomly walk in, he’s my rival.” And leaves it at that.

Of course, the internet goes absolutely feral, but this alone cannot prove anything; however, the flames are further fanned in Ilya’s next interview.

It’s one of those what’s in your bag interviews, but about his gear bag that he brings to every game, and notably, he has two rolls of stick tape. This in and of itself is not unusual, but what is strange is that they are two different brands with completely different feels to them. This strikes everyone as extremely odd knowing how superstitious hockey players are, what could Rozanov possibly be doing with two completely different brands of tape.

In response, Ilya says, “One of them is for me and other is the brand Hollander uses. I keep a spare in my bag.”

“Why do you keep your rival’s tape in your gear bag.”

“Because Hollander is very particular, and I want to make sure that when I am playing against him, he is at his best, and to be at his best he needs to have right tape. He is my rival, it is my responsibility to make sure we are both performing to best of our ability.”

This just sets off another bomb on the internet.

It was one thing for them to have the codes to each other’s houses, maybe they go in and mess with their stuff, that can be explained by a rivalry, but Ilya just admitted on air that he goes out of his way to support Shane and make sure he is comfortable. What the hell is going on between these two?

It continues like this, getting progressively more unhinged as more and more gets revealed. It comes out that Shane is learning Russian, and he admits it is for Ilya, but kind of plays it off as chirping while also stating that he has seen how difficult it can be for someone with a language barrier to answer questions in a high stress environment, and he wants to make sure his rival can understand and is always understood, because that’s his rival.

It comes out that Ilya is close to Shane’s parents, and of course he is close to Hollander’s family, that’s his rival.

They share custody of a dog named Anya no one knew existed, of course they do, they’re rivals.

They admit they are each others’ emergency contacts, why wouldn’t they be, they’re rivals.

There are any many number of funny ways this could eventually resolve itself, but I personally would love if they kept it going long enough where they got to a point where both of their contracts expired (Ilya took out a shorter contract when resigning with Boston,) and they both up and leave to go join Ottawa.

Everyone is stunned. What the fuck just happened? What do you mean they are playing on the same team? What do you mean they just broke the damn game? What do you mean they have been seen together around Ottawa? What do you mean they live together? What do you mean they were seen together at a COURTHOUSE?!
