BECOMING ELIZABETH 1.06 // THE GODFATHER (1972)
Richard Rich was one of the most evil men in Tudor England (and that's up against some pretty stiff competition) so it's always interesting to see how he is portrayed as a secondary character.
In Wolf Hall he comes across as a rather dense sociopath. I kind of love how he takes every opportunity to either state the obvious, or loudly say "DON'T DO THE STUPID THING" when NO ONE was suggesting the stupid thing in the FIRST place.
Cromwell: *Picks up a fork*
Riche: DON'T STICK IT IN THE ELECTRIC SOCKET
Cromwell: i wasn't GOING TO
The week after Cromwell's execution he sends a round robin email about wellness

It's been over a year since I last read a Tudor novel...
bearer of the curse known as 'i find it boring when characters in historical fiction think, feel, behave and sound exactly like modern-day people'
Book that was good: I liked it π
Book that was bad: this sucked π
Book that I wanted to like but which failed to live up to my hopes: I am going to write 10,000+ words explaining exactly why this book wronged me
I'm all for Catherine Parr talking about her experiences as Henry's wife but not at the dinner table, c'mon. That should have been a private scene with just Elizabeth. And did she have to be disparaging to Anne and Catherine? Given she found herself in the same peril as them, wouldn't that inspire some sympathy or compassion for them? And surely a woman as intelligent as Catherine won't believe Anne was really guilty. And even if she did, did she have to rub it in Elizabeth's face like that? In front of everyone? Catherine can say she loves Elizabeth until she's blue in the face but I don't believe her.
Honestly it's a miracle any of these courtier characters survived Henry VIII because they all have ZERO SOCIAL SKILLS
HOW FUCKING DIFFICULT IS IT TO NOT HUMILIATE A PRINCESS AT THE GODDAMN DINNER TABLE
Lemmings. These shows are about LEMMINGS.
It's wack to watch knowing that I, with my weaponsgrade autism, STILL have a better chance of surviving Henry VIII than these total dumdums.

Elizabeth (1998) has its inaccuracies certainly but the scene where Elizabeth practices her speech to Parliament and goes pink with stress and frustration might be the most relatable Elizabeth I has ever been
NATALIE PORTMAN as ANNE BOLEYN
THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL (2008) dir. justin chadwick
it does always piss me off when a historical drama only costumes the characters meant to be unattractive or unsympathetic in historically accurate clothing, while the attractive/sympathetic ones are given essentially contemporary costumes with a slight historical flavor. the past is a foreign country and mainstream film treats it just like one
"He, at the same time being a very successful man of the cloth, was also the great politician of his age, really. He was like a chess player, except - it's a very critical game of chess, where if you make the wrong move, it's death, if you make the right move, it's glory. But he served, above all, the king. He loved the king, and the king loved him. But finally, as happened very often in the reign of Henry VIII, things started to go awry." β Sam Neill on Cardinal Thomas Wolsey
The Tudors Sam Neill as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey Season one (2007) | In loving memory of our favorite Cardinal.
We need more female protagonists like Sam Neill's Wolsey:
-older
-hot
-managing a bad boss
-cunning
-ambitious
-devious but not evil
-has a buxom wifey
-tragic downfall with an eloquent monologue
