When someone refers to the term ‘equine’, it usually means something related to horses. A doctor of equine medicine is basically a veterinarian who specializes in horses. These specialists can offer complete health care for horses, donkeys, and even ponies and mules. Some experts can treat distant zebra cousins fairly well. 

These vets can make house calls and travel to see the patients in case there is some kind of an emergency. They may help deliver a foal, undertake surgery, or inject a vaccine. These vets work long hours for days to treat the patients, which they feel is a rewarding experience. There are numerous undergraduate studies and vet schools that help the aspirants achieve their goals. There are a few who push themselves even more by taking up an internship course or by working for specialist residencies. 

As we mentioned in the post, these specialists may care for a wide range of animals, but for the most part, these professionals take care of domesticated horses in general. Equine vets take care of the animals right from birth till their death, it is a commitment these professionals rarely shy away from. They can help the horses to get pregnant, care for mares during pregnancy, along with delivering the foals. As a horse goes into its adulthood stage or phase, a doctor would then be required to treat it for a variety of diseases, infections, and disorders. Some of the most commonly seen diseases that can be seen in horses include botulism, clostridial diarrhea, equine coronavirus, equine infectious anemia, influenza, pigeon fever, rabies, rotavirus, strangles, and tetanus, to name a few. 

Horse vets may administer treatments and medications to treat these diseases, along with performing laboratory tests, screening, examinations, and surgeries. Horses are some of the largest animals that can live alongside human intervention; they need proper care and maintenance to live a happy and healthier life. As for the wild horses, they cannot be treated like the domestic ones. That would require specialists who know how to perform distance sedation.
