I went into The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act with pretty mixed expectations. I'd already been spoiled on some major plot points, and from what I'd heard online, I wasn't sure I was going to like the direction it took. To my surprise, I ended up enjoying it quite a bit and I found it genuinely touching.
SPOILERS BELOW
A lot of the movie focuses on Jax, which was something I was initially worried about because they aren't my favorite character. In the end, though, I didn't mind it at all. Their story does a great job of showing the road to abstraction. Jax is someone who clearly isn't comfortable opening up to other people and yet they're put in a situation where vulnerability is practically the only way to survive.
I think that's why abstraction has long been understood by much of the fandom as a metaphor for suicide. Everyone needs to feel truly seen, but being seen means exposing every part of yourself, including the ugly parts. Jax clearly carries a lot of shame. The movie also heavily implies that a lot of that shame comes from them being a trans woman who's DEEP in the closet. Their inability to trust others enough to reveal who they really are ultimately becomes part of what destroys them.
The scene where they hug Pomni and admit that they don't want to go was heartbreaking. It revealed that they were ultimately more afraid of abstraction than of being honest about who they were. The tragedy is that by the time they realized that, it was already too late to turn back.
I found it comforting to see their abstracted form resting peacefully in the tent the rest of the cast made for them. I saw a lot of people interpret that as the group basically keeping them around as a pet, but that wasn't the impression I got at all. To me, it felt like they were honoring them. No matter how much conflict they had with them, they still cared about them and wanted them to rest peacefully after struggling for so long.
I've always found comfort in the idea that death can sometimes mean the end of suffering. That's how I felt when my dog died suddenly from a very aggressive cancer in 2024. It was devastating, but there was some solace in knowing he wasn't in pain anymore. I like to think of death as sleeping and resting forever with no worries. He's safe in his urn, resting, even though he doesn't look like himself anymore. That feeling came back to me while watching the way the cast cared for Jax after they abstracted.
The revelation of the neural scans was another aspect I was skeptical about before watching. I had already been spoiled on it through Twitter, and I wasn't sure how I felt about the idea that the characters were essentially copies of real people. By the end, though, I thought it worked well.
The Amazing Digital Circus has always been interested in questions of identity, and this twist fits into those themes. While the characters may share the neural patterns of real people, identity is largely shaped by experiences, relationships, and environment. By the end of the movie, the characters identify far more strongly with the people they've become in the circus than with the originals they were based on. On a neurological level they may be those people, but in every meaningful sense they've grown into entirely different individuals with their own memories, relationships, and sense of self.
The film also raises interesting questions about artificial intelligence. AI, especially generative AI, is a controversial topic right now, but as someone who enjoys science fiction and stories like I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, I find it fascinating to explore what it would mean for artificial intelligence to become genuinely sentient and develop its own identity and desires. Humanity has never had to coexist with another form of intelligence comparable to our own, and the movie explores that idea.
I found Caine's character compelling in this regard. Throughout the series, he is obsessed with fulfilling his purpose. At the same time, it's clear that what he really wants is acceptance. By the end of the movie, he seems happier when he stops trying to act like a god and starts seeing the humans as equals. He opens himself up to learning from them instead of trying to control everything and finally that leads to them accepting him as one of them essentially.
Overall, The Last Act was thoughtful, and surprisingly optimistic in it's message. Its exploration of identity, personhood, and connection definitely gave me something to ponder over.
Still, Gangle and Zooble banging crazy style in the credits was hands down the best part. The Amazing Digital Yuri always wins 🫶

when people defend the “Cis white guy is default” thing like “He’s meant to be an everyman we can all relate to and project on!” kindly remind them the largest ethnic group in the WORLD is Han Chinese and the highest gender percentage fluctuates so if you want an ACTUAL “default” you want a 40 year old chinese person whose gender changes from year to year.
