Skeleton On A Toilet

The works included in this installation elicit questions about the behavior of physical forms as they come into contact with a metaphysical experience. Applying circular logic and opening absurd lines of inquiry, the works included in this exhibition monitor themselves and their relation to one another by revolving roles as critics and defenders in a shared existence. When a form is present, but not physically in existence, invisibility becomes the subject's form. When sight ricochets or looks upon itself, there is a moment in its deflection that re-­animates the subject's form. Alluding to their haunting capabilities, these works are alive in their presence through placement and deflection. Definitions fade and some things are not necessary, but add meaning, like a skeleton on a toilet. PENELOPE is pleased to announce that we will be a part of Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s SATELLITE SHOW during Art Basel Miami Beach 2015!

We are thrilled to join a host of artist-run spaces and collectives from all over the world to occupy Miami Beach’s defunct Ocean Terrace Hotel.  

We Gave Our Best, Now the Rest Is Up to the Hope Chest

Hope Chest: Traditionally in the form of a wooden trunk or box, contained the dowry of a young woman. The chest and its content played an important part not only in the business transaction between two families, but served as a survival kit for the new life the newlyweds were about to enter. The Hope Chest didn’t just contain the objects that would secure a young women’s future but comprised her heritage, her sense of belonging. With this in mind we will produce a Hope Chest that will travel from the Old World to the New World and then back again. In each city (NY, DC, LA) a group of artists will participate in shaping the content of the box and therefore the exhibition. With this gesture of sharing we want to highlight the intellectual exchange within the European - North American Art community. This exhibition features the work of 13 artists engaging in various embodiments of craft. A follow-­up to the first installment of Static Cling—presented in the fall of 2014 at Penelope Gallery, Ridgewood, New York—the work included in Static Cling 2 continues the exploration of the nebulous line between craft and art, camp and sincerity, the creepy and the sentimental. These artists take advantage of both visual and conceptual short cuts to create works that live between physical and psychological realms, often incorporating laborious, repetitive motions associated with stitching, embellishing, weaving, modeling, and casting.
