I wouldn’t be surprised if in Book 2, Leona had dehumanized Malleus so much that he didn’t even really think Malleus would die from the stampede. He describes Malleus as a monster earlier in the book, so in his head he could have been thinking “He’s fae, a few people won’t kill him… it’ll be just enough to stop him from participating in the tournament.”
Because Leona’s smart. It’s easy to forget that with how Book 2’s writing is, but Leona is one of the most intelligent members of the cast and is keenly aware of how politics work. That’s kinda the point of his dream in Book 7. So he of all people should have known what would happen should the one and only heir to Briar Valley die. It would be a political incident like no other. A Leona fully in the right headspace would never try to cause an incident on the level of murdering a future monarch.
But to him, Malleus was not a person that could die. He was a monster. He was a symbol. A symbol of all the things Leona himself could not have. When Leona looks at Malleus, he doesn’t see Malleus. He sees a crown, forever out of his reach. That crown drives him mad.
It’s that madness that drives Leona in Book 2. Not loyalty, not justice, and definitely not the intelligence he prides himself in. Just pure, mad, rage.
Like he says before he overblots: “How could any of you understand my anger? My pain?”
I think part of Book 2’s problem is it severely understates just how much anger is steering every choice Leona makes. He’s not being smart or cunning. He’s just an angry kid, throwing toys until someone gives him what he wants. But they don’t point out at all how the oversights in Leona’s plan are out of character for him, it simply passes it off as his usual cunning, so he looks stupid in the process. But he’s not stupid, his rage is simply overriding his brain.

Okay so I don't normally do this, but I find this topic fascinating so I wanted to blab a bit. See, some wonky execution aside (mostly I think from Books 1 and 2 being committed to being too fast-paced), I think it was obvious that Leona was only trying to appease his dormmates back in Book 2, because he says as much then. Keep in mind, what specifically started to trigger his overblot was *not* the plan failing, but rather, when his dormmates cried out to him and called him their leader. That's when he starts to get irrationally mean, and mocks them for ever believing the plan could work. Then it was a two-hit combo with Lilia saying he was not a fit leader like Malleus, and that's when Leona waxes poetic about never being king.
This is not, however, his true snapping point. Keep all this in mind.
Leona fascinates me because he's a very interesting line between a filthy liar, even to himself, and being incredible self-aware. And I think part of this is due to the fact that two somewhat paradoxical things are driving both his rage and depression (because OP is absolutely right that rage is in the equation, albeit underneath the nihility).
These two things are both key factors: Leona can never be "king", and Leona is terrified of being a leader.
He leans into the first, which is in actuality misrepresented, but in Book 2 is overblot is actually largely fueled by the second. SavanaClaw believed Leona could be their savior, but he did not believe this. I do think Leona genuinely tried to help, but then once again, there's this insurmountable obstacle, a born prince actually destined to be a king, who's very existence is stopping every plan, and Leona just. gives up. But because he gives up, he is then failing the very position he once believed he would be good at, and when this is brought to attention, he just can't take it anymore. The paradox collides, and he overblots.
A large part of Leona's damage is in his hometown event, not Book 2. Sadly I think Book 2 was way too committed to mirroring The Lion King, and later TWST gets to breathe and exit this formula a bit more. However the hometown event provides loads of context, as well as the crux of his real issue: nobody at home has and will ever listen to him, because they are resistant to change, even if their ways are actively hurting the community. It's not about "being king." It's about not being able to make a difference, about being ostracized for being genuine, but this is a vulnerability that Leona cannot and will not articulate. So we have to read between the lines.
In Book 7, his "dream" is also his nightmare, because that paradox is the driving force of his motivations. He is finally able to influence his country, and he does terribly, because his greatest fear is that Neji and everyone is right, and his intelligence is a sham and his personality is a poison. This is the same fear that set him off in Book 2. He's finally in a position of power and he can't do a damn thing. He's still useless, but instead of being ignored, he outright failed, and he could not take it.
We got a crucial look into his mentality in Book 6, in his conversation with Jamil. He insisted that Jamil gave up too early, and that you have to "put your blood, sweat, and tears into it, and then you give up." Because that's what Leona did. He tried a lot, based on what seemed to be a very well worn argument between him and Neji, and then he failed. And he gave up, and now he is beaten down and afraid of trying again, but it's easier to act apathetic than to admit—to others or himself—that he cannot bear to actually fail if he gave it his all. So he stays stuck in a middle ground forever.
Book 2 is the perfect storm. His dorm is largely reliant on spelldrive for post-school opportunities: it is a problem, and they believe Leona can fix it. This is a meaningful situation. (And, his emotional damage aside, his method to this is absolutely scheming and foul play here. He's placing his dorm above everyone else and justifying playing dirty because of the stakes.) However, because Malleus is that formidable of an obstacle, the nihilism sets in fast, and he doesn't help that Malleus is a picture of a lot of the things already triggering to him: he's a prince, he's well loved by his people, he's powerful, and he has everyone's ear. (This is Leona's perception, of course.) He's clearly superimposing some stuff on Malleus once the lack of rationality kicks in and that's part of the problem. Malleus is both a picture of the insurmountable system that has quashed him and a royal like his brother (who, let's face it, is not like Mufasa and is, in fact, not a great king. see aforementioned infrastructure issues).
Now, the stampede will not have killed Malleus. Full stop. He can fly, he can teleport, he can punch through stone with his bare hands, and knows loads of shield magic on top of being physically built like a tank. I think Leona was fully aware of this, because this was where the plan fell apart and he gave up. It still bothered him very deeply, however, and that is where the real rage starts to shimmer in the background, with Malleus as the target, not the cause. There's a lot to say about the parallels and foils between Malleus and Leona, too, but that is a different blab session lol.
Leona is one of my favorite overblots to study because so much went into it, and even in the thick of it, he held back the core of the matter, because that is something he has always avoided. Leona is beyond pissed that his home country is actively perpetuating a system that does not work and also harms its own people. (i.e. his vendetta against the fountain, or the other cities not having paved roads.) He's mad that nobody listens to him and because he was born second, nobody ever will. He's devastated that he could not make a difference. He's nihilistic and believes that all of effort will be wasted and end in failure. He's terrified of failing. He wants to be listened to but he's uncomfortable when people rely on him, because of all aforementioned reasons. He wants to try; he wants to work hard and achieve something meaningful; he wants to be appreciate on his merit; he wants his existence to actually mean something. However, he stopped believing that long ago, and then it was easier to lean into being the bad guy than to come to face his heartache. (Which is the pride talking, in a way, but that's also another subject.) So having all of this thrown into his face all at once? Punctuated by Lilia repeating nearly verbatim the sentiment we see prevalent in the Sunset Savana, that his attitude (his response to this pessimism) is proof that he would have always been a bad leader? Well.
There we go.
hai hai hai so i am like. IN LOVE with ‘To Set a Trail Ablaze’. seriously i cannot convey how it rubs my neurons together in such a unique way through words. youre so creative especially when it comes to dan heng AND AND I LOVE THE WELT INCLUSION AND USING HIS HI3RD LORE!!!
on that note, i’m considering trying my hand at bookbinding and i wanted to ask if you’re fine with your fanfic being said ‘book’. it would just be for me personally but i still feel like asking for your opinions on it is important, since it ultimately is YOUR work and not mine :3
WAHHH omg hiii. Thank youuuu, I am so glad that fic has hit its mark! Well worth that the sucker exploded from my control and ended up double the word length lol. All of the characters tickle my brain so badly and demanded attention.
It's actually so funny, because I learned HI3 lore (aside from what my friend blabbed) solely to better understand Welt (and other game references) and ended up down a rabbit hole. I have enjoyed the manga and the web novel and now I am cursed with knowledge /silly
and aslkdjflskgjlskgjsl;kgjk yes I will be so honored if you wanted to print and bind it! As a fellow bookbinder enthusiast, I wish you the best of luck. (And hopefully the fic will be done soon, lol.)
Hi Pencil i am in ur askbox with no ulterior motives, plans or schemes whatsoever :]
Well when you put it like that, I simply must believe you, dear friend
So I've read HTRYDS for a while, and as a result ive kept an eye on your tumblr. The other day i was rereading Code Adam, because i love the Originals with their incredibly dysfunctional family, came to tumblr to look for fanart, and saw stuff you've drawn.
Doesn't mean anything, but i just thought it was cool an author whos stuff i like has read stuff i like. And i wanted to share. Sorry if the message bothers you.
Not at all! I'm glad you shared! (I just forgot to respond to this.)
Code Adam has a relatively small fandom so I'm always glad to see it get some love! Truly the dysfunctional family of all time. Maybe one day I'll do other stuff for them, but after I binged the latest season to catch up, Otto stole my brain and got fanart and a one shot out of me and that successfully calmed me lol. (I can't afford to sell my soul to all these fandoms smh /silly)

Very curious, but what drawing program do you use 👀?
So, I use Affinity Photo, but now I can't direct people to that program exaaaactly, because after I bought it, Canva purchased Affinity and changed things. It's a free program now, and really, that's not a bad thing. It combines the functions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and inDesign. ...although from what I have seen of this version, it is rather simple, and harder to customize. Fortunately I'm locked in with the legacy version I paid $25 for (on sale) and installed extra brushes on.
Sometimes I use Rebelle 7 for real artsy stuff. The Erza ocean picture, for example. I highly recommend that one for anyone more familiar with traditional media.
since you are already at Planarcadia, what did you think about the Astral Express trio scenes in Amphoreus?
Hi yes I totally remembered this ask (I did not.) Now I can say I am caught up with the game though, lol.
Yessssss omg I loved the trio scenes in Amphoreus. That reunion? Masterful. I will say I am greedy and I wish we had *more*, but letting them all be together post-reunion is still nice, as they collect the Chrysos Heirs. I understand that there wasn't really time for much interaction, so I take what I can get. The main reunion itself really captured how much they all mean to each other, and the relief—relief of regaining March, and March's relief of finally being okay and not alone. It's soooo sweet and tender, and then the follow up joke (I think mostly in the article ngl) that implies the ongoing argument of who cried when (they all did at least once) is so silly and like them and also showcases their dynamic well—namely how relaxed they are.
I dooooo wish there was more of Trailblazer and Dan Heng past that very first stretch of 3.0. It did feel like as soon as the duo got settled in Amphoreus, the plot ditched Dan Heng immediately—to focus on the new characters, sure, but I don't think his presence would take away from that. (Like how we mostly meet Hyacine through him, for example. Though we were robbed that he and Mydei dueled to bond off screen smh.) But if they were both there... Please... Narratively I think we could have gathered more clues about TB being "dead" that way, and then it could have made the reunion hit wayyy harder, especially with the Trek sequence. Selfishly, I just enjoy all Astral Express bonding, and I enjoyed back in Belobog and the Luofu where they explored and interacted with the new region as a mini group, so we get both types of interactions, but I digress. We *do* kind of get back to this in Planarcadia so I am content.
I will shout out the Seal Slammers event though. I loved that event. (Anyone who follows my hsr writing has probably noticed by now lol.) Not only was it silly, a good look at Cipher and the casual world building, but TB and Dan Heng getting to be silly together in their own way is so important to me. I could ramble all day.
Then I could also ramble about the thematic, character-side blabbing regarding the Trio, and the significance of their bond. To swing back around a bit, Trailblazer's and Dan Heng's confrontation with Evernight, followed by March's confrontation, reallllllly really emphasizes this and I think it's sooooo cool, and also very indicative of the Larger Plot Themes. Low-key I have been chewing making an entire post about it, mostly through the numerous foils shown in 3.6, but I digress again.
Anyway yes. Trio content good. All hail trio content.
So what is your reaction to wendy finally getting a duel element?
I literally had no idea about this because I don't keep up with 100YQ lol. Most I know is when I poke into that thread in the server I'm in. (Look, I love FT, but the sequel is uhhhh not for me. It lowkey managed to amplify the parts I didn't like about the main series and toss the parts that intrigued, so I fell off. Maybe my opinion would be different if I stuck with it, but right now, it is what it is.)
Hi!
I hope this message doesn't come at a bad time for you, I'm very sorry if it does. I was wondering if you have any idea when you might resume posting for HTRYDS?
*slinks off to corner to hide in shame*
Whoops. I really did not expect this, but other fandoms swallowed me whole and those projects have taken waaaaaay more of my time than I expected in my hubris. So uh. Short answer is I don't know. Longer answer is I do really want to get back to it before the end of this year at least, because I do still love and want to do HTRYDS, but my heart is very fixated on projects like With the Storm and the upcoming The Longest Night so... We shall see. I love this series and I love you all so I want to get back to it, but I know I gotta follow my brain worms otherwise I'll burn out again.

Made this as a ref sheet for myself but figured it would be fun to share. Anyway to nobody's surprise I have a lot of scar/scale headcanons for yet another favorite dragon character, because Hoyo dangled the concepts of scales and injuries and tails in front of me and I took that personally.

It haunts me that we don't know what Dan Feng originally looked like, before becoming Imbibitor Lunae, only that the dude is clearly traumatized by it, so I finally put my concept to an image. I hereby deem him a red-head, for the maple tree man.
