Asthma Management
What is Asthma?
Asthma refers to a chronic condition affecting the airways. Asthmatics share the same symptoms, including a narrowing of their bronchial tubes. Airway narrowing occurs due to swelling of the lining of the airways, increased mucus production, tightened muscles around the airways, as well as accumulation of inflammatory cells. The narrowing causes coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
FAQs about Asthma Management
◦What are the symptoms of asthma?
There are many symptoms of childhood asthma, ranging from a persistent cough to sudden and frightening breathing problems. Parents should look out for the following signs:
•Nighttime coughing
•Whistling or wheezing sounds when you exhaling
•The skin around the ribs and neck pulls in tightly indicating trouble breathing or fast breathing
•Frequent colds that settle in the chest
Your child can have only one of these symptoms or several of them. You might think it's just a cold or bronchitis. However, it can be an indication that your child has asthma if the symptoms recur. Asthma symptoms may be exacerbated by triggers such as air irritants (e.g., smoke or strong odor), pollen, pet dander, or dust mites.
◦Can asthma be cured?
Although asthma cannot be cured, it can be controlled with treatment.
◦How can I tell if my child's asthma is under control?
The Asthma Control Test is an easy way to determine if your child's asthma is under control.
Well-controlled asthma means all of the following:
•Daily asthma symptoms are mild to none (cough, wheezing, or shortness of breath)
•Acute asthma attacks or episodes are rare (including hospital stays)
•Taking oral steroids (prednisone) no more than once a year
•No restrictions on school attendance or activities
•Only use quick-acting rescue medicines like albuterol no more than twice a week
•When healthy, lung function is normal
◦When should we consult an asthma specialist?
Your child should see an asthma specialist if he/she:
•Having trouble controlling his asthma
•In the last year, have been treated with oral steroids (prednisone) more than once
•Has symptoms every week during the day or at night
•Breathing problems when playing or performing activities
•Misses school because of asthma
•In the past year, have been to the emergency room more than once
•Breathing problems required a stay in the intensive care unit
•Has side effects from medications or does not respond to them

Circumcision
Circumcision refers to the surgical removal of a baby's foreskin. Circumcision has various advantages, including a reduced risk of ailments including urinary tract infections. Circumcision is also performed on older boys and men. The circumcised penis recovers in about a week at any age.
What is the foreskin?
The foreskin is a flap of skin that protects the penis' spherical tip. The foreskin is entirely linked to the penis when a newborn is born. The foreskin separates from the penis head over time and can be retracted, or pulled back. Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin does not separate as it should and remains tight. Phimosis is usually treated with more intervention or circumcision.
Who performs a circumcision?
In the hospital, the circumcision might be performed by a urologist, obstetrician, or pediatrician. It can also be done later in the office by a healthcare provider. A qualified expert known as a mohel performs circumcision in a bris.

When to call pediatricians
Typical illness symptoms and when to call the doctor
It's the middle of the night, and your child appears anxious and unwell. You think to yourself, "My child is unwell." Do I go to the doctor? “Do I have to wait till the morning?” As their child grows, many new and experienced parents will face a circumstance similar to this.
Most parents have faced similar challenges in the past and have tried to find answers to these questions. It might be difficult to tell how unwell your kid is and whether or not they need to see a doctor. While you should feel free to call your pediatrician at any time, whether it's 11 a.m. or 11 p.m., this guide will help you figure out when to call and when to wait.
It's tough to sleep when your child is unwell, as every parent knows. It's much more difficult when your child is so tiny that they can't tell you what's wrong. It's critical to understand how to determine when your child requires medical assistance. Take a look at the symptoms and signs below to see if you need to see a doctor.

When you phone the doctor, attempt to provide as much information as possible to assist the doctor in assessing the problem, give details on underlying diseases, the length of time symptoms have been present, and the severity. Drawing a picture of what's going on will help your pediatrician better grasp what's going on.
Sang Pediatrics is dedicated to helping parents and their children with their health needs. Call us for an appointment or more information.

What is separation anxiety?
Separation anxiety is a typical and normal concern that children have when they are separated from their parents or caregivers. Separation protest refers to the behavior that occurs when children are separated from their parents.
Many children skip separation anxiety in infancy and begin exhibiting difficulties at 15 or 18 months of age. Separations are more challenging when children are hungry, exhausted, or sick, which is the majority of the time during toddlerhood! As they gain independence in childhood, children may become more sensitive to separations.
Separation anxiety disorder in children
Separation anxiety becomes less common when children reach preschool and school age. Of course, there will be times when they just want to be with you.
If your preschool- or school-age child is frequently and visibly disturbed when away from you, he may have a separation anxiety disorder. This disorder affects about 4% of preschoolers and 4% of school-age children.
Separation anxiety disorder is when:
Anxiety interferes with your child's life, and hence with your own.
Your child is more anxious than most children his or her age.
Your child's worry has lasted at least four weeks.
Look for these signs if you suspect your child has separation anxiety:
Dislikes being apart from you
Fear of being hurt and or having an accident
Refuse to attend school
Doesn’t like sleeping anywhere without you
Pretends to feel sick from being apart from you.
The Bottom Line
It’s natural for parents to feel a bit of anxiety when saying goodbye, but they should know what to look for. These include age-inappropriate clinginess and tantrums and withdrawal from family, friends, or peers. In addition, excessive guilt, refusal to attend school, and a fear of leaving the house are also signs of separation anxiety.
If your child is unwilling to go to school, you must talk to them about their fears and help them calm down. Let them express themselves. This way, they can open up and be more comfortable. Also, it helps ease their fears and can adjust to their environment.
Your child may even struggle with specific physical symptoms of separation anxiety. That’s why parents should consult a specialist before making any hasty decisions. Play therapy, family counseling, and medications can assist your children on their journey.

Understanding baby developmental milestones can help you keep an eye on your child's development and growth. Throughout this post, we'll explore the different milestones that babies reach each month and what to do if you are concerned that your baby is experiencing delays.
