“I spent some time backstage after Pearl Jam played at Cabaret Metro. The men in the band, Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, and Dave Abbruzzese, were mingling among the crowd. To be honest, they each looked like a cross between a lumberjack and a punk rocker – both fairly masculine social positions. However, I watched as these lumberjack punks politely talked with and listened to women and men. Eddie Vedder approached me to check to make sure everything was okay. During our conversation, he spoke in a soft, quiet tone. Mike McCready and Jeff Ament both did the same sort of checking in, and were very polite and soft-spoken. In other words, the visual impression of their bodies cloaked in flannel, army fatigues, concert T-shirts, and combat boots struck a discordant relationship to how they talked and interacted with me and with others. The lumberjack punk was, not only a rather nice guy, but if you took the time to listen to what he had to say and paid attention to how he said it, it became clear that he was also committed to challenging sexism, racism, and heterosexism.”

When you and your friend get in trouble
Eddie Vedder & Chris Cornell
“I really like Chris’ records and I think he’s the best singer that we’ve got on the planet. I first met Chris when I moved to Seattle, and we started hanging around. I didn’t know what musicians did with their life, and I quickly realized that what he did on a Friday night was to get a 12-pack of shitty beer and chase his dog around on the mud for four hours in the forest. That was about an exciting an epiphany as I had!”
