OK HI!! Thank you for the ask!!! I’ll try my best to give a few tips that might help!!!!

I went ahead and grabbed some reference photos and tried a little exercise for myself before I tried forming my answer! First I drew Grace how I normally draw him, and then I tried to follow more closely to a reference of Ryan Gosling

I tried to pick photos where he was making an expression that showed his eyes in a more neutral position

I noticed that in some angles his upper eyelid looked like it had a squared shape, so I used that in my more stylized drawing along with a more prominent downwards tilt to his eyes.

His eyebags are a prominent feature as well so I made sure to add them in my drawings

The green outline is to show how I would draw his eyebags. Very curved, and they taper out on the outer corner but still stay close to the shape of his lower eyelid

I had to mess with the exact shape and size for a bit to make sure he didn’t look much older than he is so don’t get discouraged if you have the same problem

There are some minor differences in the ways I drew his nose here, but that mainly comes down to what shapes are more simple and easier for me to draw and replicate multiple times, as well as my design headcannons for Grace!

In that vein, you might also notice that I drew Grace with a rounder face, where Ryan Gosling has a more narrow face. That and Grace’s beard and mustache being a bit more sparse are just based on my personal preference and what I think works for his character!!

Another note I have about my Grace design is his glasses! I always draw them lower on his nose for a few reasons!!

The main reason is that he does wear them hanging off his nose like that fairly often to begin with

This is not to be confused with the “glasses hanging off his FACE” maneuver !!!!

As one does ofc.

Secondly is that his glasses cover a lot of the space below his eyes, and I feel like drawing the glasses lower on his face overall sort of emphasizes that!!

Reason three is that it’s cute

Another tip I have for capturing his likeness is a little more random but still useful (for me at least)!! I noticed he furrows his brows a lot, and when he does they always look very upturned. I like to use that in a lot of his expressions because I feel like it makes them seem more accurate!

Speaking of eyebrows, Ryan Gosling’s eyebrows have short tails! I draw him with short, upturned eyebrows without a prominent arch

What I most notice about his facial proportions are that he has a long face overall, particularly his nose and chin, and his eyes aren’t especially spaced out from each other.

So if you feel like there’s something a little off about your drawing of Grace then I’d suggest checking the spacing between his eyes, between his nose and his mouth, and between his mouth and his chin!!

Uhhh last thoughts about likeness in general is if you feel really stuck on the face and like it’s just not looking quite right, then you might try adding some other notable features (example: hair, or in this case the glasses can be a big help!)

I find that sometimes I get very caught up on nitpicking each feature that sometimes I judge it too harshly. So for me doing this can help the character look more like they’re supposed to, but it also gives me a little moment to step back and look at the face with fresh eyes again
