As I mentioned in that ask I sent you, Rosinante has always & will forever read as Perseverance to me. Purple heart, obviously, but also it just– fits. He perseveres, despite it all. He keeps going with grit teeth and blood on his hands and claws his way to hope because violence is the only way he can get what he wants. He cannot stand back up after dying, but goddammit he will die fighting with a smile. (also the fact the purple soul mode appears during Muppet's fight? the spider?? with the webs??? the argument is practical made for me)
Belle-mère is Determination. This may partially be me wanting to give dt to the resident D clan member, but I can explain. Remember the Oykot Kingdom incident? How Belle was laying there fully ready to just die before she found Nojiko & Nami? How she got up and got them all the way back to Cocoyashi through the power of one boat in the middle of a storm? If that's not "enough willpower to die & stand back up" idk what is <3
Smoker is Kindness. I swear to god I'm not just assigning based on colors HEAR ME OUT– the first time we are introduced to him, it emphasizes his gentle nature above all else. His tolerance with being interrupted by his underlings, the whole thing with the girl & the ice cream cone, every interaction he EVER has with Tashigi– under all the rough attitude, Smoker is a deeply kind person driven to the do the right thing simply because he cares about people
Hina is Justice. Obviously had to give this to one of the Marines. Hina is hard to characterize in Firestorm due to her annoyingly low amount of canon content, but I do my best. The way I work with her is as someone who is generally unmotivated by her surroundings but deeply fueled a sense of righteousness inherent to her personality. That's why she ended up with a Devil Fruit so perfectly suited for law enforcement! Hina can be argued for Integrity or Patience due to her general passiveness, but I stick to Justice for her due to the fact she genuinely believes anyone can be Just regardless of what others think
Shanks is Patience. Man is practically the definition of biding his time. And while he can certainly be impulsive, he's grown into a tendency to wait, passive and choosing. He only acts when the time is right to do so, otherwise, he is patient. At first it may have been moreso drifting from location to location with no firm goal, but once he found out what he was waiting for, well... He stands in the sidelines and observes, only stepping in when he has to
Buggy is Integrity. Despite being quite rhe liesmith and trickster, he is so unapologetically Himself. He will never be anything other than the genius jester! He may embellish and fluff up like a peacock, but he never denies what he is; a performer! The spotlight is on him, and he basks in it. It's also an ironic choice, considering integrity means held together and his Devil Fruit means he is perpetually the opposite lmao. Overall, Buggy is very sure of himself and who he is, which is the heart of integrity at the end of the day
Shamrock is Bravery. I'll admit that much like Hina, the low level of canon content makes him hard to pick for. Going off mostly Firestorm lore once again, he is facing a Lot by simply... existing. Being the child of a Celestial and a commoner, befriending the Donquixotes against his Father's wishes, daring to enjoy the Marine training– it all requires a level of bravery for him to feel comfortable having fun with his friends! I also feel like the Vibes just fit him, the direct confrontation of it all
Like I said above, I'm not good at this. And my insistence on no repeats is a bit limiting. So if you wanna take a swing at this, go ahead! And about my deviations from canon, you can just straight up ask about those. I'm happy to explain the changes I made & why! Even if most of the reasoning is just cause I thought it'd be fun lmao

There seems to be a misconception about Grace's translation software that is bothering me more and more and we need to address:
It is *not* AI. It is not """interpreting""" Rocky's words/meaning. It only picks up literal words.
This is how it works:
Eridian words are musical notes/chords
Soundwaves are physical, and at different frequencies they make different patterns! These physical patterns, and therefore Eridian language, is formulaic and repeatable. This is easily processed by computers in a reliable way. This is also lucky for Grace!!
Grace and Rocky create a database that maps notes/chords to words
When Rocky speaks, the computer looks up the exact notes in their pre-made database and returns the associated word
It is a FORMULAIC LOOKUP, NOT AI
Rocky isn't saying "My loneliness knows no bounds, and I have forgotten my soul in the endless abyss" which the translator outputs as "Rocky in space too long"
Rocky is literally saying "... Rocky in space too long" knowing that that's the only words the translator has to draw from.
It's a bit terrifying to me how quickly people are just accepting "yeah computers must be intuiting basic meaning" because that's the opposite of how it works. They don't "understand" anything. They take gads of data and turn it into something that looks like it has meaning, not the other way around. I know I'm fighting a losing battle here, and maybe I'm just being a pedantic asshole, but god do I hate how pervasive this misconception is.
So much this. Rocky's weird language quirks are because he's simplifying and restructuring his language to make it easy for Grace and/or the computer to pick up.
Rocky is doing the hard translation work in his head before he speaks because Grace is learning and the computer can only regurgitate words that have already been saved — in the order that Rocky says them.
Like when you have a friend who is learning your language, and you slow down and use simple words/sentence structure and fewer slang/jargon words to make it easier for them.
Because hearing is Eridians' primary sense, they have a better memory for sounds, which means Rocky picks up English quicker than Grace can pick up Eridian.
In the book, there is no text-to-speech involved, Grace records Rocky's vocab into a spreadsheet, which he uses for reference on the fly and also as a DIY duolingo for Eridian practice. The movie just adds a speech generator (which is a pre-recorded soundbank provided by a NASA journalist, played by James Ortiz, lol).
But it's doing the same thing — just out loud for the audience's benefit (and so Grace doesn't have to be running back and forth to his spreadsheet in the early days). It matches soundwaves that Rocky generates to the vocabulary spreadsheet and then pulls the corresponding English word from the soundbank.
Obviously it *should* sound very early GPS voice 🤣 because it's word-by-word without infection, but although Ortiz did try that a bit, it wasn't working well on-camera. So they turned him loose to give Rocky's voice personality. And we can suspend our disbelief for it because he's *fantastic*.
But especially when writing for Rocky in fics, we need to remember exactly what's happening, otherwise it won't sound authentic.
Mary's voice is likewise not really ai. It's a voice assistant with a prerecorded soundbank as well. It can really only respond as programmed.
It's important to note that Chekhov's Gun was not originally about foreshadowing, but a piece of advice to playwrights about how every element in a play should have narrative relevance. The corollary to Chekhov's Gun is that if a gun mounted on the wall in act 1 is never used at all in the entirety of the play, then it should be omitted from the play entirely.

Wait so. Elliot Page’s role in The Odyssey is to be unwillingly sacrificed within the first five minutes of his appearance and THAT’S the “complex and interesting” role that people have claimed was personally gifted to him by Nolan for transitioning into a man?? Five minutes of screen time where he’s immediately killed?? Are we actually fucking serious right now. I’ve had to deal with post after post on every social media platform telling me that The Odyssey is proof that Elliot Page transitioned into privilege and the role in question is the most insulting, transphobic, nothingburger I’ve ever seen in my life. Am I missing something here because I feel like I’m losing my mind.
These people think a trans man existing in public is proof of privilege. These people think a trans man being allowed to live and breathe is proof of privilege. These people don’t want trans men to exist btw call it out for what it is at this point.
I get that Sinon is an important and complex character, but when we’re discussing the context of Elliot Page playing him and how his character was handled in Nolan’s adaptation:
1) His character doesn’t exist in Homer’s Odyssey and was taken from Virgil’s Aeneid and given to him instead of giving him an actual character in the Odyssey. If someone were to visit the original source material, his role will not even be there.
2) He is essentially the dead wife of the plot, and is also one of the youngest characters. He haunts the narrative, which is a pretty common role given to women so as to not actually write them into the plot, but please do keep telling me that there is absolutely no transphobic or misogynistic biases towards why Elliot Page was specifically selected to play Sinon.
3) He still only gets a combined amount of about five minutes of screentime, and considering this is the most notable role he’s recieved since coming out 5+ years ago… I don’t think this is proof that transitioning has benefited his career. Every time Elliot Page is even mentioned by name, the internet goes on a horrifically transphobic crusade for months until he’s forced back into obscurity. His acting career has objectively tanked since coming out.
4) Elliot Page has already worked with Chrisopher Nolan and was given a (noteably) bigger role in Inception pre-transition. Christopher Nolan did not “wait” for Elliot Page to transition (whatever the fuck that means), the two already knew each other from previous projects.
Edit: Personally, the only real win to me is that a trans man got to play a cis man without his transness being considered an issue, but the way in which Nolan went about it felt more like throwing Elliot Page a bone while benefiting from the outrage caused by Elliot Page simply existing, and instead of celebrating the small win that trans men received, every single side of the internet decided to rip into him and either call him a mentally ill woman or a privileged man benefiting from misogyny.
