I think I'd have to go with the echo at the exterior (I can never remember the echoes by their names) if it comes to the text given to the characters as well as the location. I might make a list sometime of ranking my favorite echoes by the soundtrack that plays when you encounter them.

Personally I think it's a mix of both: Like the outer can (I guess you could say) like the exterior part like the leg/underhang/the wall for Pebbles' exterior is mechanical, as well as the puppet itself, at least partially. Maybe half & half for the puppet part? As well as part of the inside of the region itself (like Five Pebbles for example) especially with the neurons. I don't think a little slugcat would have the digestive system that would process mechanical pieces. Now that I'm typing this, It makes me realize if the Iterator was entirely a computer, Five Pebbles practically gave himself a computer virus (the rot) & thinking that a pc virus would be an actual creature is both funny yet terrifying... in the case of the rot at least.
