behind the scenes of these abstract comms
it occurred to me recently that not many people know exactly how i go about making these. i streamed myself making one not too long ago to some friends who were all surprised to see that i was drawing everything by hand, only ever using rulers for really long, straight lines.
believe it or not, the most taxing part of the process in making these is sketching them out. having to find a good pose that works with the character, their expression, while also making good use of strict angles, tangents, and perfect shapes is actually incredibly difficult. but once i have a solid concept down, i then have to actually make sure my lines are aligned properly to the same angles - hence the absurd number of lines and circles everywhere.
of course, the dragon piece is by far the most complex one of these i've done by far. the cow is way less complex, so it's easier to make out what exactly is happening and where all the guidelines fall (it also helps that i cleaned up most of the lines haha, the dragon had so many i just skipped the cleanup). but all of this is purely to make sure i'm sticking to the geometry i set out to achieve in the first place!
after that, it's lineart. like i said, i'll use rulers for straight lines, mainly those that are too long for me to feasibly remain consistent when drawing digitally. the circles, however are all me :> thankfully it's all just tracing over my sketch/guides from there, so it doesn't take as long, but you can imagine how harrowing it gets when i give myself massive circles to follow. sometimes it kicks me in the ass, but i enjoy it, and i'm proud of it.
so in case you were wondering, no, these are not vector illustrations! i'm sure i could use vectors to make it a lot easier, but this is sorta how i've always done things. back before i did digital art, i would try to achieve the same feeling in my art on paper, and it was infinitely more troubling than this ! at the very least, being digital now, i can undo the lines that i mess up. but in these pieces here, you can see i only had one shot to make it work. fun stuff
anyways that's all, i felt like blabbing about this because i wasn't sure if it was clear enough in my work that it was all done by hand, but now you know :>
