I have nowhere to say this but... I headcanon that Nina has a stench so strong that even supernatural characters like ghosts can smell it (bonus points if the physical undead can smell it too and start gagging.)
I don't know how, but it would have been a miracle to actually recruit/force The Bartender to serve The Operator in Origin. This man is so weird about servitude and the whole "unconditional loyalty" towards someone. I can say it does irritate him so much that he won't be anyone's proxy or peon [in canon and interaction with OCs] LMAO
Same with being friends with people... ehhh bro's weird TwT
(I'm putting this under a readmore because it's long af, because The Bartender happens to have a relationship to the Operator in Origin that I think about A Lot)
I don't see it as servitude, more like offering representation, if that makes sense. In Origin, different factions are actively looking for entities like him both to recruit and to kill, so he's got a threat to worry about. The Operator is offering him protection from all those forces- not only a pocket of his own that is fundamentally his, but access to a broader universe where he might pursue a greater life. All he's asking for in exchange is that when The Bartender is asked "who are you with" his answer is The Operator. And in some ways (in Origin at least) that is true- it was The Spores that enabled The Bartender to live beyond death, so he's got a relationship to The Operator that if he ever brings up, will get a reaction.
(Lmao now I'm imagining the Operator having an ad like a lawyer. "Mistreated in a past life? Need compensation? Call Operator and Sons, we'll get you what you deserve, and won't take a DIME until you get it!")
There would be A Conversation, at least. But The Operator has already figured out that what a person offers is worth more than what they cost for him, and so he's willing to define everything by the terms of the other party. Some people crave to feel like a holy warrior, but for others, it's A Job.
Granted, Bartender might be able to be recruited by another Tall One at first- but I imagine he'd take one look at The Dark Carnival and go "oh GOD no". But I see it as a loyalty based on repeated experience- I scratch your back, you scratch mine, neither of us has to be very affectionate about it.
As far as friends go, that's kind of the beauty and a mild terror of The Ark, I think. You're surrounded by people who aren't intimidated by your appearance, because they're equally disfigured or mutated. They even think you're kinda cool. And weirdly, you become a person again. You're some terrifying, badass phantom one second, and then you blink and suddenly you're at a graduation feeling??? Genuine pride??? Because you've quietly watched these freakish little twerps grow up??? And then later people are just Around You because they want to include you even if you're not used to feeling Included, and then someone cracks a joke that you laugh at??? Aren't you supposed to be in Hell right now??? Is this really Hell??? It's a constant waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it just never seems to happen. It's how I think living in the Garden of Eden would feel, after living in the outside world- just this constant bliss, all while knowing horror was just a wall away.
I don't think The Bartender would actively call anyone his friend. But In Origin specifically, if The Operator came to him asking for help, he would answer that call.
