Never so much have I wished you could understand how much I love your daughter. The compassion she has towards others due to knowing fully well how trauma and guilt weigh on a person. The beauty that shines from her heart and mind, the ingenuity and determination to solve anything that comes her way. Her gentle spirit, knowing fully well from her first memories that violence is not a solution. You don’t see the things that I do. You don’t hold her after you’re done screaming at her. You don’t see her fight back tears, fight back the voice telling her there’s truth to you inflammatory words. You don’t see the terror flicker across her eyes as a well-meaning family member says she looks just like her mother. You don’t have to physically hold yourself back from being a rock for her during the loss of a genuine, special person. You’re dismissive and self-centered, and you only see what you want to see. You tear the ground away from her path toward better health. I wish you could understand that I see her. I see the strength despite the cracks. I see the beauty that radiates from within her. But you don’t get to take credit for that, Sir. She does. She has spent her whole life overcoming. A tall order on its own, but she also reaches out to others to help them see they too can overcome. I love this woman with all my heart, and I just wish you could see that. I believe you love her too, Sir, and I only have but one request: act like it.

I lie awake, watching her sleep. I wrap my arms a little tighter around her, wishing that they could be her armor to protect her from the evil done in this world. I rest my eyes from time to time, paying attention to the gentle rise and fall of her chest. Everything about her is gentle; it’s just her way. I’m reminded how she chides me to shoo a fly out the door rather than reach for the flyswatter. She cares for the world; she champions so many that need a voice. How I wish that the world could all see her for the wonderful person she is. How I wish that we didn’t have to live with fear in the back of our minds. Fear of rape. Fear of death. Fear of whatever unspeakable things hate can conjure up. The world can be a nasty place, and it’s not restricted to just one religion. All I want is to show her I love her, without fear of attack. I want to grow old with her, and to focus simply on the bumps along the way that every other couple struggles with. I love her with every ounce of me; with every breath. It pains me to want so badly to protect her from the many cruelties done to our kind in this world. In my heart I know we must go on -- we must be seen and heard. We must champion our own rights until others stand with us. We must swallow the lump in our throats and love in spite of the risks. We must be Proud.

Meet my canine better half, Potion. Potion is a 6 year old Border Collie and is more useful than my right leg. This blog will be about my journeys into furthering her training (she is presently a SDIT), and maybe a periodic post or two about my wife’s SDIT, Thrill, as well as the challenges of being a 2 SD family.
