      she  is  always  so  still,    though  she  seems  still  to  command  the  air  around  her,   &  she  is  always  so  quiet,   but  her  presence  rings  in  your  ears  anyway.    death,   it  seems,   lingers  in  your  mind  &  in your  step  still   ;   you  can  only  figure  it  is  why  she,    something  like  both  life  &  expiration,    will  not  vacate  your  thoughts.    you  think  that  .  .  .  ah,   it’s  hardly  rooted  in  knowledge  or  reasonable  feeling,   but  if  she  can  smile  in  this  state  of  being,   then  so  can  you.    you  clear  your  throat,   announcing  yourself  so  that  she  does  not  become  startled  by  a  sudden  appearance.    your  poise  is  lost  if  only  for  a  moment  when  she  looks  at  you  ;   you  feel  .  .  .  inexplicably  sad.    it  rattles  in  your  chest,   &  you  clear  your  throat  again  in  an  attempt  to  rid  yourself  of  it’s  debilitating  existence.      you  can  do  this.    you  feel  you  have  to.   

       finally,   after  perhaps  a  moment  too  long  of  staring,   it  is  princely  poise  snapping  back  into  your  shoulders  and  tone.       ‘     eir,   is  it?      ’       you  try  on  a  smile  for  her,   meant  to  make  yourself  look  warmer,    smaller              though  you  step  closer,   your  arm  is  still  some  ways  away  when  you  extend  the  flowers  towards  her   (   *    purples  &  blues  & whites  ).      ‘      you  always  look  so  downtrodden.   i  hope  these  will  help.      ’

      his  posture  is  relaxed  as  they  sit  in  the  grass.    it  is  hard  for  him  to  care  much  about  such  a  thing  here,    silver-tongue  &  all  the  oddities  of  him  so  distracting.    it  is  hardly  the  only  thing  he  has  forgotten,   &  it  is  a  tale  of  a  lovely  maiden  which  reminds  him   of  one.    he  doesn’t  interject,    greedy  for  his  words,    enamored  by  the  way  he  moves  as  though  enacting  the  events  for  him.      it  is  a  long  line  of  thought,    but  it  does  not  drag  in  all  it’s  dramatics  &  grievances  &  the  way  the  feeling  in  his  eyes  catch  light  &  drag  darius  deeper  under.      he   is  comfortable:     always  as  strong  a  listener  as  an  example,   as  is  important,     and  though  he  admits  that  he’s  no  stories  to  give  here,  and  so  no  advice  either   (   *   as  though  he  is  relying  on  him  for  such  a  thing  ),    he  does  not  seem  to  mind  and  your  own  lacking  ends  up  meaning  little  when  he  begins  to  shoulder  the  weight  of  speaking  for  the  both  of  you.

       it  is  a  long  time  before  either  of  you  need  to  take  your  leave,    &   it  is  only  then  that  he  halts  his  company.    this  time  together  has  only  confirmed  for  him  what  he  dreaded  before,    &  it  is  a  gentle  chiding  born  of  worry  spoken  before  any  goodbye,       ‘     to  give  &  receive  in  equal  measure  is  only  fair.   ’       he’ll  get  to  the  farewell  briefly    ;     this  is  important.      he  has  certainly  never  felt  his  cheeks  heat  &  hands  begin  to  sweat  over  anything  that  wasn’t.    from  under  his  set  aside  cloak,    he  removes  a  bouquet  of  bright  pinks  &  oranges,       offering  them  with  a  clearing  of  his  throat       (  *  when  did  his  heart  get  in  there  anyway?  ).

       ‘      these  surely  cannot  balance  someone  so  generous  as  you  out,    but  i  hope  you  find  it  a  welcome  beginning  on  the  path  of.     ’     

       she  is  a  strangely  paced  thing,   he  remembers  thinking  ;   she  does  not  walk  at  an  even   (  one,  two  )  repeating,    nor  does  she  to  the  (  one,  two,  three  )  he’s  used  to.   a  wildly  stopping  thing,   off  the  path  as  she  pleases           carefully  though,   he  notes   ;   she  seems  to  care  about  the  nature  here         or  strictly  on    &    chatting  as  if  they  are  not  surrounded  by  flower  beds  at  all.   so  she  is  not  lianna’s  even  pace  or  mild  manner,    but  she  is  just  as  blindingly  bright,   &   she  is  not  rowan’s  purposeful  march  or  proclamations  of  recklessness,    but  she  is  just  as  passionate,   &  so  her  presence  sits  both  heavy  &  familiar  in  his  gut.     she  must  have  noticed  the  fondness  tainted  with  guilt,   though all  he  recalls  doing  today  was  frowning  for  what  felt  like  the  briefest  moment.    regardless,    she  has  been  a  ruthless  force  since.

       he  falls  into  her  pace  after  some  time,   however  ;   always  so  good  at  melding,    and  it  is  here  that  he  can  catch  her  and  speak  more  than  be  drug  along.      ‘    it  seems  you’ve  worked  a  great  deal  on  these,     ’       warm,   warm,   warm            she  is  infectious  &  it  shows  in  his  tone.    he  wants  to  thank  her  for  the  sun.   there  are  more  ways  than  to  simply  speak  it,       ‘     and  perhaps  it  is  a  bit  of  an  odd  request,   but  i  would  truly  hate  to  ruin  something  so  wonderful.     ’      he  continues,    his  smile  a  long  stones  throw  away  from  the  frown  he  wore  just  this  morning.    another  thing  to  thank  her  for.   instead,   he  is  asking  her  for  favors.     with  a  gesture  that  he  has  free  his  arm  from  their  link  for,       ‘     could  you  pick  that  one  there?   i’d  like  for  you  to  have  it.     ’      

      she  is  all  warm,     pinks  &  whites,   as  though  she  was  born  from  this  field,   &  so  far  from  the  crowd  of  troops  as  you  are,    she  seems  .  .  .   sound.   at  least,   so  much  as  you  have  seen  her.    he  does  not  know  of  her  nuance,  truly,   but  he  is  knows  the  truth  of  that  which  she  walks  among:     they’re  weeds,   deceiving  in  their  color.     but  oh,    she  makes  the  way  they  sway  in  the  breeze  something  other  than  glaringly  overgrown.    she  makes  them  charming,   &   the  whole  thing  fills  his  chest  with  a  heat  that  rivals  any  aytolun  summer.    perhaps  he  is  just  a  clawing,  longing  thing,   never  so  keen  to  let  go  the  things  that  put  him  at  ease.    

      with  a  gloved  hand,   he  picks  one,   delicate  like  peace  hangs  in  the  balance  &  he  will  ruin  it  if  he  is  too  brash.    he  nears  slowly,    announcing  his  approach  in  fear  of  startling  her,      ‘     lady  olivia?   pardon  the  intrusion,   but,     ’       he  is  all  rough  metals  &  thick  layers  &  even  the  furs  on  his  cloak  do  not  compare  to  her   ;   he  does  not  fit  this  scene,   &   so  he  swears  to  be  swift.     he  ends  his  approach  a  respectful  distance  away,   only  close  enough  so  that  she  can  reach  his  offering.      ‘     would  you  honor  me  &  accept  this?   i  believe  carrying  something  so  lovely  may  help  keep  your  spirits  high  through  what’s  ahead.     ’
