Character description
Paul never really felt like he fit in while living in The Underworld. It was a big reason why they followed their brother, Paxton, so much â he was seeking a way to fit in and feel normal in such a strange place. Paul tried to remain calm and do whatever his brother did, but sometimes it would backfire. He would have panic attacks and deep regret with some of the fucked up things they did together. It was hard to accept themselves for what they truly were; being a demon truly felt like his own personal hell. There were pros and cons to their powers: on one hand, Paul could shape shift to hide out when feeling anxious, but on the other hand, the powers put an expectation on them to use shape shifting for things he didnât want to do. The only reason Paul worked for Harold was because of Paxton and, well, because Harold fucking terrifies him. Things luckily eased up at first when they were sent above ground, but were things really any different when they were still doing Haroldâs bidding?
Headcanons
- Paulâs never admitted it out loud, but he wishes that Paxton never got them stuck with Harold. It changed their dynamic in some ways, with Paul growing more agitated with his brother, but living in Animania rather than the Underworld has eased up his anger some.
- Paul had a really bad stutter as a kid, but itâs gotten better as they got older. It only really comes out now when stressed out, or when telling a lie. Paul really isnât the best liar, but his anxious tendencies helped him get by when lying around strangers. Those who know Paul well enough, though, see right through him when heâs lying about something.
- Paul feels bad for Meg and Paislee, since they have to put up with Harold, too. Paul is actually really kind to them, but can still be annoying and have his moments.
- Sometimes, Paxton gets into their head and thatâs when Paul mostly acts demented. He hates himself most when he realizes heâs enjoying the mayhem.
- Drugs and alcohol ease up Paulâs anxiety, but he knows it isnât the best way to cope. Sometimes, drinking and smoking distract him from jobs and he ends up in more trouble. They really struggle with the work-life balance, and it leaves them more overwhelmed and uneasy than they already are.
- He thinks itâs stupid, but he kinda wants to fall in love? They know Paxton would make fun of him for it, so he never admits it out loud. Theyâve seen true love in movies and such, and finds himself searching for love through different guys heâs met. Since Paul knows love would probably backfire on them, though, they try their best to strictly stick to hook-ups.
- Uses shape shifting to escape from himself sometimes. Being whatever they want to be whenever they want is a sort of escapism for Paul, and itâs an alternative from drinking and smoking constantly to numb himself.
- Knowing that Harold wants to return to the Underworld eventually has Paul wanting to run away and never look back. They want to stay above ground, because itâs where heâs been able to feel more like himself and have moments of true freedom.
- Paul is so gullible and it has gotten them into some sticky situations. This is where having Paxton close by comes in handy.Â
