i dont think i could sit thru 3 hours more of farewell my concubine anytime soon but truly one of those Movies of All Time. gender and sexuality and literal drama mixed with decades of Chinese history and revolution. an ambitious movie that aims and succeeds at being larger than life… and of course leslie fucking cheung does jealous yearning like no one else while gong li steals the spotlight. characters with something Deeply Wrong with them caught in situations that exacerbate their worst traits instead of bringing out any heroism or nobility in a very human way. and despite all that all the tenderness in between. dieyi doing the makeup of the man who will betray and humiliate him. juxian loving xiaolou so much she accepts being the third wheel of the toxic rship betwen her husband and his co-star, even helping out dieyi despite him never ever being kind to her. dieyi being beaten into femininity and xiaolau being part of it despite also taking his beatings. Etc etc. good movie 👍
