Occasionally as an Australian you'll be talking to someone from overseas, and you'll discover a common phrase you took for granted is, in fact, not universally known outside of our country.
Turns out casually dropping "fuck me dead" into conversation will give unsuspecting Americans an aneurism.
The more you know.
Imagine being on a work call with an Aussie and they suddenly announce they're gonna blow a load in response to a problem.
Not Aussie but I asked an American once if she was taking the piss ( i.e. pulling my leg, joking. Perfectly cromulent and friendly english expression)
and she got really upset because she thought I was threatening to piss ON her
This is killing me
Rifling through the tags, here's some other terms which are apparently causing mass carnage whenever they escape our borders:
Having a goon (i.e. Sipping on a delightful wine)
Having a gaytime (Eating an icecream)
Having a sticky beak (Investigating)
Take a squiz (To have a sticky beak)
Get stuffed (To express a revelation is most frightful)
Chuck a sickie (Take a day off work due to the humours being misaligned)
Chuck a wobbly (When one's temperament becomes visibly upset)
Carry on like a pork chop (Acting most silly indeed)
Thongs (flip flops)
Hot chook (Pre-cooked supermarket rotisserie chicken, otherwise known as the Bachelor's Handbag)
Fair suck of the sauce bottle (Let's be real)
Shits me to tears (Something is mildly annoying)
Not here to fuck spiders (Expressing a situation is serious)
Having a piss-up (A social gathering)
I'll shout you (offering to goon an old chum)
A cruisy place (a relaxed atmosphere, where one might shout and goon the night away while enjoying many a gaytime in your favourite thongs)
when you're crying about the cancellation but remember how good YOI was to you

"Hermia and Lysander" (1870) by John Simmons, from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream
high ambient background football levels reminded me to actually finish this Personal Lore That Caused My Books comic
Although the Ticket to Heaven finale wasn't executed quite like I was hoping for, it did give me two beautiful things:
Auntie Lek. It was so so important for Tanrak to not only have someone who knew his parents well, but a member of the LGBT community who is at peace with her faith and identity and doesn't let the guilt swallow her. She loves herself. It makes sense that a queer trans elder gives him the reassurance and comfort he so desperately needs and I love her inclusion in the story
Tanrak and Barth being married. Yes yes, the church being accepting of them is unrealistic but isn't it beautiful that they made it? That they got through the pain and were able to marry; something that seemed so out of reach as kids?? Started tearing up the second I saw their rings. And the show ended with Tanrak hearing Barth complain, just like he promised Barth's mother 😭😭😭 Gay marriage will never not make me emotional!
I love you, Mom. TICKET TO HEAVEN Episode 6

If you too are sad about Wu ending and want a series with supernatural/spiritual elements and a healthy dose of homoerotic friendship I have two shows to recommend to you:
Oh No! Here Comes Trouble (2023) | 12 episodes
Yes, the title is ridiculous but TRUST ME. This is definitely the closest to Wu. It stars Pu Yiyong, who gains the power to see spirits after his fathers' death. He teams up with a cop and his high school nemesis (who is now a med student) to solve various spirits' problems so they can rest. It's a bit of a mystery and thriller along with comedic elements and of course a strong bromance aspect. It also touches on the importance of connection, like Wu.
Natsume's Book of Friends/Natsume Yuujinchou (2008-2024) | 7 seasons, ~12 episodes per season
Natsume is an orphan who has always felt like an outcast because of his ability to see yokai (spirits, essentially). When he moves into his grandma's hometown, he finds her "book of friends" which contains the names of various yokai she defeated. With the help of his powerful yokai in the form of a silly cat, he tries returning all the names, meeting all sorts of yokai along the way. The show focuses heavily on belonging, feeling cast out, healing past traumas, opening up, and of course, the importance of connection. Much like Wu, both the themes and the characters have very queer vibes.
Olaf Hajek - The sad song, 2022 - Mixed media on canvas
So I haven't watched/I haven't completed... A Tag Game + Poll
Rules - We all have a couple of shows or movies that we just haven't finished watching or that have been sitting on our to watch lists but for whatever reason, we just haven't pressed play on them. This is a judgement free tag game where we put some of those shows in a poll and then watch the show that's most voted for.
Tagged by @dramalove247 😘 and @gotmehookedonthekpop 😘
I'm going to focus exclusively on shows that I have on my watchlist that I am pretty sure I am really going to enjoy, but just haven't gotten around to starting yet for one reason or another.
(Now when I will actually get around to starting it is another thing, but I will move it up the list!)
Help me choose a series to watch:
Secret Relationships
Every You, Every Me
Triage
The Eighth Sense
Century of Love
No pressure tags for @miss0atae, @williamrikers, @maybe-boys-do-love, @paulinamakes, @randomia-in-wonderland, @ginnymoonbeam, @benkaben, @embersinthefirelight
I know people may not like this, but some of this ending makes me so uncomfortable and sad. All the apologizing they still feel they have to do even though they didn’t do anything wrong, Barth remaining Christian… it stings.
Having religious trauma you always feel like you’re being shoved back on the path of believing, because in so many people’s eyes not believing means you haven’t healed and your resentments aren’t valid. I know they pay lip service to that fact that you don’t need faith to live a valid life, but it feels empty without a single character actually not being Christian.
It was a really well crafted story but it just leaves me feeling sad and alone
but im a cheerleader reunion!
