I'M A NERVOUS WRECK I'M A NERVOUS WRECK I'M A NERVOUS WRECK I'M A NERVOUS WRECK
No but seriously imagine it…
you’re seeing fall out boy on a concert. Everyone is having a great time. Fall out boy seem a little excited. “We have a surprise for you guys.” Partick says. All of a sudden they play a fall out boy song When patrick gets to the chorus, he keeps singing “insert any fob song” Lights flash everywhere, and you see FOB singing a fob song. Everyone in the crowd is going wild and crying. Then if things couldn’t get any better, patrick and pete talk to each other like normal

[Image ID: a cartoony animation gif of pete wentz from fall out boy dancing. he has long dyed blonde hair with brown roots and medium dark skin. he's wearing a grey oversized shirt with black pants and black and white sneakers. he's dancing very happily with joy from left to right. there are 8 of them in the post, and in the middle there's a picture of pete wentz from fall out boy looking directly at the camera. he has longe dyed blonde hair with brown roots and medium dark skin. he's smiling. the picture has been widened for comedic effect. /.End ID]

THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING I feel like there's so many different stories about the hiatus, and maybe a little revisionist history going on? like the zane lowe interview, when pete asks if they weren't friends for a little bit, patrick gets flustered and says, "I thought we were but then you" and gets cut off. and they reference not talking during it in numerous interviews, but then will later say they didn't lose conflict. idk man, it's odd
YES THAT MOMENT IN THE ZANE LOWE INTERVIEW MAKES ME INSANE. pete "you don't even know my kid" wentz goes "we weren't friends for a while?" like it's news to him, and patrick "I hung up on pete when he first called" stump goes "I thought we were fine!" like. okay.
it's so weird too because back when they were all like "we were always fine!!!! we always meant to come back!!!!" doing the press tour for srar they were clearly lying and I totally understand why they would. but this exchange looked totally genuine and I'm like????? guys you were there
I definitely agree on revisionist theory, but there are a thousand reasons for why. Maybe it doesn't hurt as much now so they can't go back to those cavernous feelings so they downplay it unconsciously? Maybe they said things they didn't mean except for in the heat of the moment so there's an element of we weren't friends (but in my heart obviously we always were)? It is MADDENING.
I think there's definitely some revisionist history, I think it's ten years ago and they're rewritten over a lot of it by this point in their memory. Like, it should stand out as this big deal, but when Patrick says in the Zane Lowe interview, "I don't get why everyone thinks it was a big deal," and Pete is kind of like, "Maybe the big post we made on the internet???" I think Patrick is being honest in, like, he doesn't think about it that much anymore. He probably thought about it a lot during the SRAR era. He clearly thought about it A LOT while it was going on. I don't think he thinks about it anymore. He's had 22 years of Pete Wentz by his side at this point, and there were a couple of years in the middle there where they were rocky, and I think it's drowned out for him by all the years of cushion around it now. I don't think he remembers it accurately anymore, necessarily. And I don't think Pete does either.
And that makes them pretty typical humans. Our memories are terrible. We remember very little about our lives actually accurately. (This is why eyewitness testimony is so fraught.) And we make ourselves the protagonists of everything and ascribe motivations to people they actually didn't have. Patrick says he was hurt enough not to think they were friends anymore, and Pete is like, What???? Pete says they didn't talk as much, but Pete clearly didn't interpret that as not being friends.
In fact, we know now that Pete's interpretation of his friendship with Patrick is that it's the best because they don't need to talk, they will always just be innately best friends with each other. He thinks that now, and maybe he always thought that. He took some time away to get himself together, but maybe he never actually thought they weren't friends anymore. Patrick says Pete is loyal to a fault. Maybe Pete almost never writes anyone off as a friend, no matter what. (Except for Hey Chris, which -- there's a lot there lol.) And in the Armchair Expert interview with Pete, I don't remember exactly what Pete says about coming out of the hiatus, but it's something about how he read Patrick's blog post and he didn't want his friend to be so unhappy, or something like that. Like, it seems like Pete did think they were still friends the whole time. And when Pete says he had to figure it out that Patrick doesn't hang out without working, and that if he wanted to see Patrick, he had to suggest working? That smacks so hard of the hiatus end, Pete figuring out, like, If I am missing this dude, I need to call him up and tell him to write something with me. And not taking that personally, just recognizing how Patrick interacts and rebuilding with him.
And Pete also simultaneously said kind of vicious things about never being part of Fall Out Boy again, but he also said stuff like he needed a female singer in his new band because he could never replace Patrick. Sometimes the band was on a break, sometimes it wasn't on a break, Pete was all over the place at the time because Pete was falling apart at the time. Nothing Pete said during the hiatus is necessarily true. Tbh, nothing Pete ever says is necessarily true hahaha I feel like he's used to countering the undeniable vulnerability of his lyrics with layers of vagaries. Also, he's a writer, he's got a grasp of narrative, I think sometimes that also interferes.
I think Patrick was really, genuinely hurt by the hiatus. I think he was more hurt than Pete realized, maybe even than Pete still realizes, judging from the Zane Lowe interview. Patrick doesn't view the hiatus as a big deal anymore, and Patrick was very hurt by the hiatus: Both things can be true. Patrick always throughout the hiatus insisted his band never broke up, and sometimes that may have seemed like wishful thinking to everyone but Patrick. Patrick is always in Fall Out Boy, even when Fall Out Boy is literally just him thinking about Fall Out Boy. He never wavers from it. His band never broke up and he can say the hiatus wasn't a big deal in the same ten minutes that he references he and Pete stopped being friends, and none of this is a contradiction in Patrick's brain because it's just all true to him. Pete's not the only loyal friend in the relationship.
And also, I think it's possible they're talking about two completely different things when they're talking about "staying friends" or whatever through the hiatus. When Pete says that Patrick didn't even really know his kid, that makes it sound like they barely talked through the hiatus. I think they definitely talked less. But also, as mentioned above, it wasn't so little that Pete didn't still think of him as a friend. He thought of him as a friend, their friendship intensity level had just gotten dimmed a bit. It's true that Patrick says he didn't pick up Pete's call at first after the blog post, but I don't think that's an indication of their relationship as much as Patrick's headspace. He'd just posted this really intense, exposing, dramatic cry for help, like, if I were Patrick, I also would be horrified at myself and not taking calls right away. I would be completely unable to handle what I assumed would be the pity in my friends' voices, and how completely humiliated I felt in the wake of it. He didn't pick up Pete's call right away -- but I think the more important detail about the two of them is Pete just kept on calling.
Finally, in the scheme of things, Patrick's right that the hiatus didn't last that long. It lasted less time from their perspective than it did from ours. They played their last show in October 2009, according to Wikipedia, and we know that Pete reached out to Patrick after his blog post, which was February 2012. SRAR wasn't announced until February 2013, so the hiatus felt a whole year longer to us than it felt to them. In October 2012, Patrick got married, and Pete was his best man. The whole distant-friendship-where-Patrick-wasn't-around-enough-to-get-to-know-Pete's-kid was over by that point. In fact, I think in SRAR-era press Patrick is referencing having spent recent holidays at Pete's house. I know they say it took a few tries before they could write again, but once they figured it out, they figured it out. They had a couple of rough years in there where they lost sight of each other a bit, but when they say they never "lost contact," I bet they never really did. They just stopped being who they had been. But they figured that out eventually, too.
It's my 8 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳
HOLY COW!!! This is insane. I’m 20 this year, so I created this account at 12 years old (if the math is mathing.) Fall Out Boy has been a constant staple in my life and in just over a month I’m seeing the boys for a second time.
