Track 20: Dental Anomalies, Including Molar Hypomineralization β Advancing Diagnosis, Prevention, and Clinical Management
Dental anomalies represent developmental variations that affect the number, size, shape, structure, or eruption of teeth. While some anomalies are primarily aesthetic, others significantly influence oral function, occlusion, restorative treatment, and long-term oral health. Among these conditions, Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) has become one of the most researched developmental enamel defects due to its increasing clinical recognition and complex management challenges. MIH is characterized by poorly mineralized enamel affecting one or more first permanent molars, often accompanied by incisor involvement, resulting in hypersensitivity, rapid enamel breakdown, and an increased risk of dental caries.
The 6th International Dental, Advanced Dentistry & Oral Health Conference & Exhibition welcomes researchers, pediatric dentists, orthodontists, restorative dentists, prosthodontists, oral pathologists, dental educators, and industry innovators to submit their latest research and clinical experiences under Track 20: Dental Anomalies, Including Molar Hypomineralization.
Understanding Dental Anomalies
Dental anomalies arise during tooth development due to genetic mutations, environmental influences, systemic illnesses, or disturbances during odontogenesis. Early diagnosis is essential because these conditions may affect both primary and permanent dentition.
Common developmental dental anomalies include:
Hypodontia and oligodontia
Supernumerary teeth (Hyperdontia)
Microdontia and Macrodontia
Peg-shaped lateral incisors
Fusion and Gemination
Taurodontism
Dens invaginatus and dens evaginatus
Dilaceration
Amelogenesis Imperfecta
Dentinogenesis Imperfecta
Ectopic eruption and impacted teeth
Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH)
Each anomaly presents unique diagnostic and treatment challenges that require multidisciplinary collaboration between pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, and oral surgery.
What is Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH)?
MIH is a qualitative developmental defect of enamel caused by disturbances during enamel mineralization. Unlike enamel hypoplasia, the enamel thickness remains normal, but its mineral content is reduced, making it porous, fragile, and highly susceptible to fracture after eruption.
Typical clinical signs include:
White, cream, yellow, or brown demarcated opacities
Post-eruptive enamel breakdown
Severe tooth sensitivity
Increased susceptibility to dental caries
Difficulty achieving adequate local anesthesia
Challenges in restorative treatment due to poor enamel bonding
Because MIH often affects children during eruption of permanent first molars, timely diagnosis is critical for preserving tooth structure and improving long-term outcomes.
Current Research Trends
Modern research is expanding our understanding of MIH through studies on genetics, systemic health, environmental exposures, biomaterials, and artificial intelligence. Current investigations focus on:
Etiological mechanisms of MIH
Genetic susceptibility and biomarkers
Prenatal and early childhood risk factors
Improved diagnostic criteria
Preventive remineralization therapies
Bioactive restorative materials
Glass ionomer and resin-based restorative techniques
Stainless steel and aesthetic crown options
AI-assisted diagnosis using digital imaging
Long-term clinical outcomes and quality of life
These emerging technologies are helping clinicians detect enamel defects earlier while improving treatment predictability and patient comfort.
Why Present Your Research at DentalUCG ?
Dental anomalies continue to present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges across multiple dental specialties. Sharing innovative clinical cases, research findings, diagnostic technologies, and treatment protocols contributes directly to improving patient outcomes worldwide.
Researchers are encouraged to submit work on:
Developmental enamel defects
Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH)
Dental genetics
Pediatric restorative dentistry
Preventive dentistry
Biomaterials for enamel repair
Digital diagnosis
AI applications in pediatric dentistry
Clinical case reports
Epidemiological studies
Orthodontic management of developmental anomalies
