Something I don't see anyone talk about is exactly why it's so demeaning to people who actually experience delusions when others throw the phrase "delusional" around so very casually.
I've always been so afraid to talk about being schizo-spec to people, because I'm afraid that people will call me delusional for so much as disagreeing with them. Because to so many people, that's what it means. And that's so fucked on so many levels.
Delusions aren't a word for something you think is weird, or don't agree with. Just because you can't understand how someone else thinks and feels doesn't make it delusional. It just means sometimes you don't understand some people.
I also hate seeing it being associated with moral/political views. Being a facist doesn't make you mentally ill, it just makes you a bad person. In fact, mental health terms should never be used in place of "bad person." If someone is being an asshole, call them an asshole, not delusional. My mother who thinks the KKK wasn't real isn't delusional. She's just a brainwashed moron. She believes those things because she WANTS to. That's not delusional, she's just racist.
It also shouldn't be used lightly. People have done it so much that when I want to discuss my own, I feel like I can't convey how terrifying they can actually be. How can I explain there have been times where I'm fearing my life when everyone thinks of it as "delulu= silly thing to believe." Thinking your favourite character would like you if you met isn't a delusion, it's a daydream, wishful thinking.
If you've used "delusional" like this before, this isn't a call out to say you're a bad person. Just please try to work it out of your vocabulary. It should ONLY be used to describe the actual symptom that it is.
Reblogging this again because I would really like people to see this, with how often I see people casually throwing around the word. I'm GONNA start being loud about this, I'm not going to let this just be forgotten.
