It was found out by his home planet that he wasn't dead like reported; so the guild was going to send him back to be tried for deserting. Refusing to go back, he goes into hiding and starts wearing a costume. Not this one, obviously, but it leads to him becoming a mascot later down the line.

There's a lot more to it; the years of service under the guild branch on his home planet; the disbanding of his team; him faking his death; the information not making it proper to the guild HQ of the space city he lives in and serves under. When it does; is when it all begins.

His early costumes are mostly just hoods; masks; anything to conceal as much of his face as possible; wearing baggy clothing. He could get his body changed; but it's expensive and uncomfortable. He comes across an Halloween costume head at some point; and thinks it works well for concealment.

Although anything that fully covers the face / muddles identity is typically not allowed in more public spaces; its a bit harder to draw the line for robots. What if it's actually their face? They can customize a lot... The halloween costume head eventually leads him to commission a special head.

That head is the one depicted above; it can emote; making it more convincing that it could be, in-fact, his face and not a mask.
