Warnings: blood, piercing/arrow wound, healing with a downside, super power whump, sidekick whump
----
Leader sat at the foot of a bed in the infirmary, absently brushing their fingers through their hair as they talked, "I'm just worried abour her. Sidekick is afraid of missing despite how good she is in practice. I don't know how I can help her more."
Healer thought for a moment, fixing his colar and staring out a window, "She'll get over her fears, and even if she doesn't, she is still valuble when it comes to stealth missions." He turned to leader, carefully inspecting the bruise on their temple.
"I guess you-" they stopped mid sentence, bolting upright and making their way towards the door, "Somebody is hurt."
Healer rushed after them into the hallway, preparing to scold Hero for making a stupid decision, but when he saw Sidekick crying, he immediately softened.
"What happened?" Leader demanded, worry in their tone.
"Arrow shattered." Hero reported, pulling the still shaking Sidekick into a better position.
Healer took hold of her injured arm and began to inspect the wound, he couldn't bring himself to get angry at Sidekick when she was in a weakened state. She was viscerally shaking as she cried, whether from shock or pain he could not tell.
Leader held the door open. They didn't say much, they never quite knew how to help when one of their team was injured. Healer knew it pained them, but they couldn't seem to express the emotions properly. They gave Healer a nod before glancing between Sidekick and Hero.
"It's going to be okay. Nobody is mad at you." Hero soothed, sitting on a bed with Sidekick before easing her back into the pillows, "You can squeeze my hand as hard as you need to."
"I'm just going to do enough to where the blood clots, I don't want her passing out," Healer held her arm with one hand and the arrow shaft with the other, "Leader I need you to pull the other one."
All Sidekick knew was pain. She couldn't stop thinking about the fear in Hero's eyes. The concern in Leader's voice. And the shame of injuring herself. But this all left her mind as Healer's power flowwed through her arm. She knew it would be painful, she had watched Hero struggle under it's presence before, but nothing could prepare her for the real thing.
She felt herself scream. Pain shot through her entire arm, causing her to arch her back in protest. There was no sensation she could ascribe to it, only pain.
But as quickly as it started, it stopped, leaving her dazed and gasping for air.
"Good job, it's all over." Hero soothed, still holding her hand.
Healer walked off holding the arrow, he had an odd expression on his face, one which greatly concerned Sidekick.
Leader followed, one hand on his shoulder, quietly muttering something she couldn't make out. She couldn't help but think it might be about firing her.
"You're okay. Don't worry about them." Hero stood and let go of her hand, "Focus on resting, I'll put your bow away, okay?"
Sidekick nodded weakly and allowed herself to cry more when she knew nobody was watching. She didn't mind crying, but around Healer and Leader it felt wrong. She wanted to prove her strength, and crying wasn't going to help her case.
So this actually shows one of my fears as an archer. No matter how well you shoot it, a cracked carbon arrow will shatter and likely go into your arm.

Warnings: Piercing wound, arrow wound, blood
----
Sidekick had the range all to herself. The wall of targets on the far end were full of arrows, none of which were particularly accurate. She couldn't concentrate properly. She got too much into her own head.
"You can't even anchor, what hell are you doing?" She scolded herself as she angrily pulled another arrow from her quiver. She went silent as she pulled the string, her form many levels of incorrect, causing her hand to release prematurely.
Thud
The arrow hit below the target and bounced back, sliding along the ground back to her feet.
She exhaled sharply through her nose and pulled another arrow, "I'm useless if I can't even target shoot" she nocked the arrow.
Sidekick pulled on the string, this time extra focused on her form. She felt the muscles between her shoulders tense as she coiled. The nock touched her cheek, right where it was supposed to.
BANG
Pain flared through her bow arm, causing Sidekick to drop her bow. She cried out, looking at the two halves of a carbon arrow shaft in her arm. Sidekick shouted in pain, crumpling over the injured arm. She knew she shouldn't take the arrow out, but she couldn't face the shame of Hero seeing what she had done. Especially after the monstrosity known as their last mission.
Footsteps echoed from the hallway, followed by the sound of the door slamming open, "Sidekick!"
Sidekick hid her injury best she could. She was hyperventilating, watching her own blood trickle from the wound. Fear and shock made her thoughts hazy, but she knew for sure she didn't want Hero seeing her injury. She knew it was useless, especially when Hero knelt beside her.
"Sidekick I need you to stay calm. We'll fix this. Can you walk?" They held her shoulders, looking into her eyes for an answer.
"I'm sorry," Sidekick shook, scanning Hero's face, searching for a sign of anger but not finding any.
"Shh shh, I don't care how this happened, I'm worried about you, now let's get you to the infirmary." They stood, pulling her with them.
Sidekick sobbed as she leaned into Hero, still clutching her arm to her chest as she slowly walked to the door.
Gotta love the sillies actually having the chance to mess around. Can't wait for more shenanigans to come.

Sadie had never been around so many people. The port town was bustling with sailors, merchants, fisherman, and citizens alike. All of them held information. All of them emitted so much love, some more than others. It was so much. Too much. It was all loud, but not from volume. There was too much going on. Too much imformation.
Her eyes were dilated and breathing fast as she followed Vix. It was all she could do to keep going, one step after another, following him as he navigated the crowd.
Vix was tense as well, holding the handle to his knife with white knuckles. He was constantly alert, ready for an attack from any angle. So as he did a visual scan, his gaze caught on Sadie.
"You okay?" He continued walking, but more slowly as he watched her.
She shook her head, looking longingly at a side street away from the market.
Taking this sign, Vix led them over and turned to his crewmate, concerned, "What's wrong?"
Sadie put her palms on her temples, squeezing her eyes shut against the ever present flow of information, "Just- Just a lot of people."
"Yeah I get it, mortals stress me out too. Never know when one's going to attack." He scanned the street, reaching up to touch his necklace, making sure it was still there.
Sadie looked up at him, "Why would they attack?" She instinctively put her hand on her sword hilt.
"No don't worry, they wouldn't attack you. It's just," he looked around and lowered his voice to a whisper, "Children of Fluksus are seen as bad omens. I'm actually one of the longest surviving out of my siblings."
Sadie's eyes widened in shock, but she quickly stored the thought, "Can we get back to the ship?"
"Yeah, we're basically done. We can walk back along the beach."
Acantha had never seen Rogue as concentrated as when she was making sand castles. She was silent as she compacted the sand in her bucket, trying to make the perfect concoction between wet and dry sand.
Meanwhile Heron already had his castle, even though it was crumbling in some places. He had gone searching for shells and was now decorating his castle with them. Then atop his structure was a small piece of driftwood acting as a flag pole. He seemed pleased with his work, looking to Acantha for validation.
She gave him a thumbs up, "Well done."
Rogue whipped around and looked offended by Heron's sand castle building expertise before remembering her pride, "Mine's gonna be better."
Acantha laughed, "I bet it will."
Rogue determinately flipped over her bucket and hit the bottom a few times for good measure. Then she lifted the bucket and was immediately annoyed by the fact no sand had left her bucket.
Heron laughed, earning himself a handful of wet sand to his bare chest, "Hey!"
Acantha, who had done her best to suppress her laughter, "No throwing sand. We agreed on this."
"What's going on over here?" Vix asked, jumping down from the sea wall a few meters back.
"Rogue being bad at making sand castles," Heron called over.
"Oooh sand castles!" Vix beamed as he quickened his pace, leaving Sadie to walk in his wake.
Acantha shook her head, "You are all children."
"Yeah, so?" Vix asked back, pulling his shirt off and sitting beside Heron.
Needed Mythology: Sempites are this mythos's version of nymphs. They can be any gender and take a source from plants, minerals, liquids, and wind.
Warnings: Blood, unconscious, poisoned
----
The sempites stood back respectfully as Cabral walked through, his wife growing weaker in his arms. She had passed out on the ride there.
Cinder now walked beside them with her tail tucked, sniffing Mitra's hair. She had been with Mitra when she was captured, seen by the blood matted in her fur.
Cabral knelt at the feet of an ancient sempite, gently placing his wife on the ground, "Please help me." His voice quivered as tears streamed down his cheeks.
Huon Pine glared down at him, "I do not treat mortals. Be gone." She looked pointedly at the other sempites, daring one of them to explain.
"She is not mortal." He choked out the words as tears streamed down his cheeks.
Pine's eyes widened in shock as they realized what faced them. Two immortal beings were at her feet, one suffering and the other begging. She knelt beside him, already knowing which poison the woman had been given but praying to the gods she was wrong.
Cabral clutched Mitra's hand, gently placing a kiss on the knuckle where a ring sat. He prayed to every friendly god he knew, begging, pleading for mercy. But he knew it was hopeless. They could not help.
Huon Pine finished inspecting the lifeless body before them. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and looked up at the hero before them, "I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do."
Cabral went silent, noiselessly sobbing as he wiped the blood from Mitra's lips and pulled her into a bridal carry once more. He shook as he walked out, his gaze never leaving the face of his beloved.

Immortals can't die, but there are things worse than death. The gods fear death, and so gifting eternal life to a mortal seems like a blessing. But what they cannot take into account is their bodies still being mortal.
This raced through Cabral's mind as he crashed through a building in rage. The son of the god of weaponry knew his arsenal well and intended to use every extent of the knowledge against the foolish mortals who dare mess with his wife.
"Where is she‽" he shouted, pinning a mortal to the wall by their collar, a curved blade poised at their neck.
"At the end of the hall," they gasped, clawing at his arm.
Cabral punched the mortal in the groin and sprinted off in the direction he was told. He kicked open the door and... "Oh gods-"
Mitra was curled up on the floor. Her eyes were barely held open and lips parted as if to speak but all that came out was blood. She was a sickly shade of gray, showing the veins beneath the surface. Her breathing was labored, slow, shallow, and barely audible.
"No- no no no no no-" he barely contained a sob as he gently pulled her into his embrace, "What did they do to you?"
Mitra went limp in his grasp, relaxing into him. But one of her hands was weakly holding his, using much of the energy she couldn't seem to lose. The never ending aspect of her immortal life force somehow keeping her alive.
The poison had been strong enough to kill a mortal within minutes. But Mitra can't die, and it virtually incapacitated her. It made her feel sick. An illness rivaled by no other. The taste had lingered in her mouth in the hours since. A taste which made her choke as they poured it down her throat.
Cabral gingerly held his wife as he vacated the building. Walking past corpses and injured mortals, wishing he could condemn them to a harsher fate than the Children of Merripen.
Needed Mythology: Lyktos, or Death Wolves, were formed from the hatred between Barbeau and Lulani from their divorce. Wounds from them can put the body into a near death state.
----
Acantha had experienced the near death state Lyktos wounds put the body in, but watching it happen was somehow worse. The way his skin paled and beathing shallowed. It was almost enough to make her think he might actually die.
"What's going on over there?" Sadie called from down the hill, her sword lowered.
Acantha faultered for a moment before shouting back, "Heron got hit."
She couldn't understand the word Sadie shouted, but it was undoubtedly a curse. She began to run to the pair, holding her sword at the ready as she did so.
Acantha carefully rearranged Heron's limbs so he wasn't in as much of an uncomfortable position. It was all dead weight. There was no movement in his body, it was unnerving. She lifted his head and placed a bundle of extra clothes below, putting his neck at a better angle.
"Where did he- His hand?! That small of a cut?! Even I didn't get the death reaction from something that small." Sadie said, exasperated. And yet, she still sat beside him and grabbed the suture kit.
"Give him a break, he kept me from getting something worse." Acantha picked up her bow and gathered her arrows once more, "And I don't think he practices with that spear either."
"Just help the others, I'll deal with him."
Not long after, all of the Lyktos were defeated. Vix and Rogue climbed the hill, comparing their kill count as they came upon the others.
Rogue paled at the sight of Heron visually dead on the ground, "What happened.... is he-"
"Why didn't you guys call to us‽" Vix nearly shouted, his grip tightening on his axe.
"Hey, calm down," Acantha held her hands in a placating gesture, "He's not dead, he just looks like it. He just got a cut on his hand and Lyktos wounds put the body into a fake death state."
Rogue knelt beside Heron, "You dumbass" She wasn't mad at him, sounding more concerned than anything, "I thought I was about to march down into the afterlife to get you."
Vix sheathed his axe, "We should head back." He knelt beside Heron and scooped the demigod up in a princess carry. Vix was surprised by how light he was, becoming visibly concerned by the way he felt ribs through Heron's shirt.
They all stared at him, each surprised by the action.
"Are we not ready?" Vix asked, looking between them.
Sadie turned away, "Yea, we're ready." She started walking off briskly in the direction of the apothecary, making a point to hide her face from Vix.
He followed, leaving the other two to scramble after them.

Fireweed enjoyed life. She found joy in nearly everything she did. Her bees were lovely little creatures she spent most of the day with. She only sees them in the summer and is always delighted at their return.
But this morning was a little different. As she was watching her small friends wake up and begin to traverse the landscape, something else caught her eye. Belladonna's bush was acting off. It was clumping together tighter than it should. It resembled an insect going into rigor mortis, her branches crossing over themselves.
"Donna, what's wrong?" She gently touched one of her stems. Immediately after making contact with it, the branch peeled back.
Before touching another, she looked around the garden. Cherry and Smith are asleep at the base of Smith's tree. The flowers are conscious but definitely not fully awake. Oregon is precariously walking across the fence as if it were a balance beam.
Calyx is sitting at the base of Douglas' tree, seemingly in the middle of an in-depth conversation.
Fireweed had to deal with this by herself. She couldn't worry Calyx, and he was too hard on himself already for his accident.
"Please be okay." She touched another branch, and as this one peeled back, she could see the form of a limb.
Donna is back. This is bad. Are they going to die? Are they dying, and she isn't doing anything? Is she making it worse? Fireweed staggered back from her friend's plant, petals fluttering from her hair.
She had to get Calyx.
Fireweed sprinted. She'd never seen a sempite return in such a way. It scared her. She didn't know what happened to make Donna form here, but it couldn't be good.
Before she even said a word, Calyx was on his feet, "What happened?"
"She- The- Donna's back." Fireweed stumbled over her words and one of Douglas's roots.
Without saying a word, Calyx rushed off. Donna would only return if she was gravely injured, which meant he had to act fast.
Veins of green sprouting from his fingertips snaked their way up his arm. He didn't consciously perform the magic. It was simply a part of existence for the demigod. With this, Calyx knelt, ripped the bandages from his palms, and began to dig through the branches.
Inside laid a sight he could never forget. Vacant eyes stared into the distance. The chlorophyll still wet on her lips. And the hole going through Donna's chest.
"Gods almighty, what did they do to you?" He gently cradled her shoulders, unleashing the magic he held.
"Will she be okay?" Fireweed leaned over Calyx. All of the bees in her hair were gone, fleeing from her stress.
The light returned to Belladonna's eyes and she gasped awake. She looked around wildly then seemed to realize she was safe, "Hello Cal."

I immediately wrote the next part because that sweet 1 am motivation hit lol
Godless masterpost
Previous part
Sounds of panic and combat filled the dock that hosted their ship.
Donna gave a startled squeak as the previously dismissed sounds grew alarmingly close, accidentally dropping her fishing line into the ocean below.
Kastor yanked his line back onto the ship and peered over the edge to see the cause of the chaotic commotion.
Their four crewmates were back… along with an angry squad of criminals.
His mind began scrambling to try and keep up logic and not freeze again. There were bad guys, they were being attacked, he needed to defend the ship.
Through the fog of fear settling into his mind he grabbed a sword that had been tossed carelessly onto the deck.
It was hard to miss the scared expression of Donna, prompting Kastor to make a hasty promise. “Don’t worry, I’ll defend the ship the best I can.”
The words seemed to do little to comfort her, but Kastor didn’t have time to try and soothe her fears as the feeling of feet clambering onto the ship distracted him.
In an instant his senses were overwhelmed and assaulted, his mind screaming at him to both run and fight at the same time.
A voice cut through the air and snapped him out of what could’ve been another freeze up despite not being aimed at him.
“Donna! Get this ship moving, we’ve gotta go!” Arone called out, engaged in a sword fight against his masked attacker.
At once Kastor noticed how the ship was swaying slightly more freely, they must’ve cut the ropes before hopping on board.
Suddenly a sword was thrust close to his face, causing Kastor to flinch backwards on instinct. He was being faced with the challenge of battle yet again.
Newfound determination flooded through Kastor along with fresh adrenaline. He raised his sword and stabbed it forward at his opponent, hoping to scare them off and present himself as a capable threat.
Just as he predicted, his attacker dodged backwards. What he didn’t anticipate was a sword piercing through the back of the criminal’s chest.
Once the body flopped onto the floor and painted the ground with red, he took in the figure of Sailen in front of him.
“Nice combo there pal, let’s keep it up! Stick with me!” Sailen had a strangely wide grin on his face considering he just stabbed a man, but that didn’t stop him from grabbing onto Kastor while holding a light rapier in his off hand.
Though slightly flabbergasted from the quick interaction, Kastor shook it off and prepared to try and aid Sailen as best he could.
There was a decent crowd on the ship with them, even as Donna got the ship moving out towards the ocean. A few of their perpetrators abandoned ship and jumped off in order to make it back to land, but others remained.
Sailen dragged him over towards the front of the ship where all the action was happening, jesting at attackers who were beginning to overwhelm Celestine.
Celestine didn’t need much of a weapon, fists of pointed rock were definitely all that she required to give someone a good pummeling. Despite holding her own, she seemed pretty grateful to have some of the load lifted off of her.
Kastor moved to the other side of the man he and Sailen had singled out, aiming his sword threateningly at him while Sailen did the same.
The man made arguably the smartest decision and jumped overboard, beginning to make a mad swim towards the shoreline.
“Phew, that saves us a fight. Nice moves, fisherboy.” Sailen gave him a teasing shove, causing a shy smile of acknowledgement to cross Kastor’s face, even despite the new nickname.
Most of the criminals had either been slain or tossed into the sea, only two remaining that Jarnok and Arone were easily cleaning up.
But just as Kastor thought they were in the clear, one more attacker made themselves known, by stabbing a sword straight through Donna’s back and out her chest.
Donna gave a horrible cry of pain as the blade pierced her body and was ripped out, liquid green oozing out from the hole in her chest.
“DONNA!” Arone screamed, voice shrill with worry as he rushed towards the man responsible for Donna’s cries.
The breath in Kastor’s throat hitched as his legs suddenly felt unstable. Did he just watch one of his only new friends get killed right before his very eyes? He couldn’t tear his gaze away from the bloody sight.
Even Sailen seemed to be at a loss for words, though for a different reason. His eyes were on Arone who had angrily charged Donna’s attacker and slammed him against the deck with a loud thud.
Arone bashed the man’s head against the ship walls with his boot before raising his sword directly over the man’s face.
“Oh gods, don’t look—” Sailen quickly put himself in front of Kastor, shielding his view from what would’ve been a gruesome sight while also saving his own eyes from the terror.
Despite not seeing the assault, the sickening crunch of skull didn’t leave much to be imagined.
By the time he was allowed to look towards the remains of Donna’s attacker, all that was left behind were stains of blood, the body being tossed overboard.
“He’s usually much calmer than that, don’t worry.” Sailen hadn’t left his side. Kastor had a sneaking suspicion that Sailen was trying to keep him calm.
Kastor wasn’t lingering on Arone’s actions however, he was focused on Donna’s state. To his surprise, there was no Donna to be found on the ship.
“W-Where did she go..?” Kastor would be lying if he said he wasn’t shaken by the whole scenario, the truth obvious in his trembling voice.
“Don’t you know? When sempites are heavily damaged, they’re sent back to their source. She’s alright, we just have to go fetch her.” Sailen explained, giving Kastor’s shoulder a comforting squeeze.
His nerves were somewhat soothed by the notion, but not completely. How were they going to find the plant that Donna came from?
“Do we know where her source is?” He asked, watching as Arone gazed out towards a specific direction with intense focus.
“We sure do, it’s a dainty little garden not far from here. Made by the goddess Zainia herself, you know she’s in good hands there while she waits for us.” Sailen’s words felt confident, instilling a sense of peace within Kastor.
At least Donna was safe, safe and hopefully recovering. It was a miracle that her source was in a sanctuary made by a goddess.
“Hey,” Sailen spoke again, “why don’t you head on down with me to the cabin? I’ve got some wounds to treat with Donna gone, and I’m gonna catch some sleep.”
The mention of Sailen having injuries grasped his attention immediately. “O-Of course, I’ll help you tend to the wounds.” He offered, walking after Sailen who had already begun his descent downstairs.
“Much appreciated.” Sailen smiled, carelessly tossing his rapier into a corner of the cabin before sitting down on the infirmary bed.
Although Kastor was still frazzled, it was nice to simply relax in the dark cabin beside Sailen as he grabbed onto some of the basic medical supplies.
godless characters my beloved. I love Donna a lot <3333

The days following Kastor’s injury turned out to be much better than he expected.
While the whole crew still had rounds to make of course, so Kastor remained back at the ship with Donna. The healer never usually went out with everyone else, so they both stayed to guard the ship.
Over the now two weeks that had passed from Kastor’s first arrival, he felt like he knew he had at least two friends. Sailen and Donna.
Arone seemed nice enough, though much more focused and serious than Sailen was. Being the leader called for his full attention, he couldn’t blame the demigod for being too busy to get properly acquainted with him.
Sailen spoke highly of him though, the two had been childhood friends according to his words. Donna seconded his opinion, being teased by Sailen for seemingly having a small crush on the son of Merripen. Kastor couldn’t blame her, Arone had many admirable traits.
Jarnok, on the other hand, scared him. The half-sempite not only could turn one of his arms into magma, but he also had the fiery attitude to go with it. Sailen appeared to like him the least, same with Donna. Kastor was pretty sure that Jarnok would be his worst critic. He could already hear the insults flowing from his mouth.
But despite being quite rude often, Jarnok was loyal. If anyone on the ship got hurt, they’d receive a fate worse than Agonos.
Lastly Celestine, Donna’s best friend. She was definitely a bit prickly, but very intelligent. The sempite was a bit of a perfectionist, though that was because she always planned for the perfect outcome. Her heart was not one of stone though, she cared for the crew and used her smarts to keep them away from harm.
Donna was a lot like Sailen, she was kind to him. Though shy, she seemed to open up when those she trusted were around. It felt like a reward to watch her slowly come around to his presence.
“Uhm, can you come down, Kastor?” Donna called out from below the deck.
Kastor looked down towards the cabin from his spot near the stern. He had recovered most of his strength from the choking incident, but Donna still wanted to keep an eye on him.
He took the few steps down into the cabin and looked towards the half of the space that Donna had deemed their infirmary.
Once he approached Donna the two awkwardly stared at each other for a few seconds, both waiting for the other to start the conversation.
“…did you-”
“I just wanted to check on your bruising..!” Donna quickly cut him off, both of them deciding to speak at the same second.
“Oh… okay.” Kastor muttered in response, going to sit down on the makeshift bed that had been his sleeping mat for his recovery.
The sempite sat in front of him. Donna had a large purple flower that covered the top of her head to act as pseudo-hair, her body was also lined with rich green leaves that guarded berries the color of midnight. Kastor had been told early on to avoid contact with the berries, they were deadly poisonous after all.
Despite the poisonous nature of Donna’s plant, she was a gentle being who wished to heal others. Kastor admired that about her. She wasn’t bound to what she was.
Before Kastor could even take in Donna’s tender contact with his bruise, the initial pain began to melt away. Thank the gods that most plant sempites had healing magic.
“I’m sorry for not asking you first, but the bruising was in my healing range so I just went for it..!” Donna quickly explained afterwards, looking nervous for Kastor’s reaction.
Donna didn’t seem that much different than Kastor himself. He was trying to stay in the good graces of the whole crew, while Donna was wanting to make good first impressions on him. It was somewhat relieving to know that he wasn’t the only one struggling here.
“Don’t worry about it. I appreciate your help, really.” Kastor reassured, moving to touch the previously bruised area to find that it no longer hurt. Sempite magic worked wonders.
A small mutual smile was shared between the two, Kastor hoped that Donna realized their similarities too and wasn’t giving him a pity smile.
An idea entered Kastor’s mind, a much more bold one than usual. He wanted to try and bond with Donna some more, and since they were on a ship, why not try some fishing?
“Hey uh, Donna?” Kastor asked, turning to look over at Donna who had been idly messing with one of her leaves.
“Oh, yes?” The sempite replied, leaving her leaf alone and putting her attention onto Kastor.
“I know you mainly stick to healing, but do you want to try some fishing while we’re docked here?” He offered, silently fearing the thought of his proposal being rejected.
She seemed surprised at the request, but her response was shockingly quick. “I’ve actually been wanting to try that for a while now… so sure!”
Kastor thought he might explode from relief that the interaction didn’t go poorly. He pushed himself off of the bed and began walking towards the stairs.
“Well, I don’t mind showing you. I used to do a lot of fishing back home.” Home… stop thinking about it Kastor. Not now.
The smile that crossed Donna’s face once more sparked a certain happiness in Kastor, watching as she followed him up onto the deck.
While talking about the hobbies they liked, Sailen had shown Kastor the fishing gear. The ship had plenty of fishing lines, though they looked mostly unused. He grabbed two lines out and handed one to Donna.
“They’re already set to go, so all that’s left is to toss them out. Hopefully this bay has some good catches.” Kastor felt much more at ease, fishing was something he knew how to do and was fairly good at.
He cast his line out, watching as Donna followed his demonstration and threw hers out too.
“Wait till you feel a tug, once you do I can help you pull in the catch.” Kastor instructed, watching the waves lap over the area his hook remained in.
“You seem like you’ve done a lot of fishing.” Donna commented quietly while they both gazed out towards where the sea met the sky.
“I’ve done my fair share. Fishing was popular where I grew up.” He replied, thinking back to the times when he first began fishing, and recalling the thrill of his first catch with his father and cousins.
It all felt so simple back then when he was just a boy. His father would take him and his three cousins out fishing on their boat. He was always so nervous about messing it up, but his dad reassured him that everyone messed up eventually, and that it didn’t make them a failure. Just human, like everyone else.
The comfort of being simply human didn’t help Kastor anymore though. Now everyone around him wasn’t human.
Kastor felt a brief tug on his line, but pulled up a bare hook.
And suddenly, the serenity of silence was filled with screams.
thank you to @phoenixradiant for the tag! This looks super interesting!
Rules: Go through a few of your characters and explain the origins behind their names and personalities, and if the two are related.
I'll do this for the peeps in The Legend of Orian Goldeneye!
Jasper "Jas" Katherine
I wanted her to have the initials "J.K", and I chose Jasper because the mineral/gemstone is typically red, like her hair. The nickname came about because I liked how it sounded as compared to her full name. As associated with the color red, she is really passionate and emotional, tending to lash out and solve problems with violence rather than logic.
Killian Cory
The name "Killian" in Gaelic means "war", "contention", and "strife". It also means "blind" in Latin. I thought it was fitting due to him being blind to his past, which he suspects was full of contention and strife. His present isn't much better. As a stark opposition to his name meaning, he tends to be a peacemaker and diplomatic, if a bit on the reserved side.
Orian Goldeneye
Orian's name I kinda just made up, a creative misspelling of Orion the constellation and figure of myth. Appropriate since he is in essence a myth on Somnia. Goldeneye is more of a title than a last name, referring to the unusual color of his eyes.
Diana Ozborne
Fun fact about Diana, in the original draft of TLoOG, she was a very different character and underwent a lot of changes before the rewrite. For one thing she was a man, his name was Ozborne L'Sang, and he wasn't a bard. The role is still very similar, but the vibes were off for the rewrite when I was plotting so I switched some things around. I kept the last name Ozborne and chose the name Diana as the first name because I liked it. Ozborne is a creative misspelling of Osborne/Osborn which means "bear god", and I consider both versions of Ozborne to be incredibly protective of their charges as a mother bear is with her cubs.
Henrik Bronze
I mostly picked "Henrik" because it sounded medieval-ish enough for the setting, Henrik is a character unique to the rewrite, he never appeared in the first draft. The name does mean "ruler of the house" which as a strict and stern garrison captain is somewhat fitting. The last name Bronze is in reference to the alloy and keeps with the theme of Somnians having metal/mineral-related names or last names.
Azura Lazuli
"Azura" is derived from the word "azure" meaning blue, it's fitting because she has a blue color scheme. Despite the associations of the color blue being with calmness and serenity, she's as much of a hothead as Jas. "Lazuli" is in reference to the gemstone, obviously, and keeps with the theme, it is also blue.
Morpheus
Named after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. As the first dreamshaper and mentor to Orian, I find it incredibly fitting.
Oh yours actually have a bunch of meaning behind them-
Yea not as much over here
Most of them either never had or don't remember their last names
Heron
Originally this character was a girl lol. But I needed a bit of changing and so Helen was turned into Heron. Which just so happens to be a sea bird, which fits with his godly parent
Sadie, Vix, and Acantha
Yea none of these had much of a thought behind it lol
Rogue
It's the explanation for the archetype inside of the mythos. She is the daughter of the thievery goddess
Calyx
He is The Gardener. And Calyx is the word for the outmost layer of a flower
And the rest of them have names that are quite on the nose because they're nature spirits :)
oooooo so much cool naming stuff. I usually have a lot of detail with names, but I let myself by looser with more recent names
Dima
I got the name off of a name website lol
Liran, Terach, Coro, Arone (every single minor god and most major gods)
Don’t know if these are actual names, I just mashed sounds together that sounded cool, which is a recent trend of mine with naming
Fleur
Simply came to mind and I liked it
Jarnok
Some friends of mine recently watched a show about Vikings that they’re obsessed with, so I mashed together sounds that sounded vikingy. Norse mythology is super cool
Kastor
I really liked the name Castor for a character, but didn’t want to have too many characters starting with ‘Cas’, so I changed the C to a K lmao
Azure
His family had a theme of gemstone names, honestly his whole kingdom does. When making him I knew his color was blue, so I searched for a blue gemstone. No name stood out to me, so I settled for Azure since it was a color that was used to describe a gem

Bro needs some help. I feel kinda bad He'll be fine
----
Calyx didn't know how to sit still and recover. He felt trapped in the house. It reminded him of things he didn't want to process quite yet. It didn't quite smell the same either. The scent of freshly baked bread had vacated the premise, making it just smell wrong. This wasn't the same house anymore.
So he stayed outside. He decided to get started on a long overdue project: Expanding the garden. His axe felt familiar, but the scabs and bandages made it uncomfortable. The pain distracted him from his other problems.
Thud.
He could ignore his inability to make proper food and how underweight he had become.
Thud.
He could ignore the holes in his clothing and blankets.
Thud.
He could ignore the sempites nervously watching him, not daring to approach their caretaker.
Thud.
He could ign- he couldn't. It wouldn't leave his mind. None of it would. Every problem was just stacking atop one another and creating a mountain which he feared the prospect of climbing.
Thud-Thud
The axe finally went through, lodging into the next fence rail. Calyx took a deep breath, pulling one hand from the handle and brusing back his overgrown hair. He looked at the bandages, noticing the blood seeping through.
He furiously pulled the axe from the wood, swung it above his head and brought it back down, yelling "I'M A FAILURE!"
A pair of hands grasped his shoulders and turned him around, "You take that back." It was Smith. "You take that back right now. You are not a failure and you're a fool for thinking so. Look at us. Look how healthy we all are."
Calyx's hollow gaze scanned his surroundings. The blooms of Vervain, Lily, Lupine, and Lilac. The bright red fruits of Cherry. The unripe apples in Smith's hair. The bees in Fireweed and Belladonna's area. The grapes in Oregon's vines. The towering figures of Hemlock and Douglas Fir.
"You did that. You. No failure could do that."
Calyx took a second, allowing the tears to pour down his cheeks, "But-"
"No. No 'but's. We'll figure this out, okay? I know you can do it. And we can help. I'd say we're strong enough to do a lot of things. Don't worry about us for a while, you need t-"
He couldn't finish his sentence before Calyx collapsed into him, heaving with sobs, "I- I- I need help."
I really love Kastor and the Godless crew tbh, Kastor’s really fun to write
Godless masterpost
this is a part 2 to this writing
Next part
Kastor awoke with a throbbing headache. The last thing he could recall was being slammed against a cave wall and slowly choked.
Filled with a sense of disoriented panic, he quickly attempted to shift into a sitting position, but was pushed back down by a grounding hand.
“Woah there, rule one of being hurt is to not move.” A smooth voice spoke from somewhere in front of Kastor.
“W-What… who..?” Kastor mumbled out, still trying to shake away the haze of fear and pain that clouded his mind.
Attempting to swallow hurt, causing a slight whine of pain to leave Kastor’s mouth. He brought a tentative hand up to his throat, pressing on it slightly and feeling sensitive bruising.
A figure leaned over him, expression unclear through the blurred vision of Kastor. The figure grabbed onto his hand gently and pried it away from his neck. “Easy there, and to answer your question, it’s Sailen.”
Kastor’s eyes lit up with recognition as soon as Sailen spoke. A sudden flush of embarrassment flooded his face. He’d known these people for at least a week now, how could he not recognize one of them?
Sailen seemed to pick up on his flustered state, giving a chuckle and leaning back against a crate.
“Relax, I’m not gonna bite your head off for not recognizing me. You're the new guy, and you’re also recovering from nearly dying, so I think you get a pass.” He spoke with a carefree attitude, his tone coming across as friendly.
The change of scenery finally hit Kastor, noticing how they weren’t in the cult cave still. Kastor hadn’t been with the group for long, but he still managed to make out the deck of the ship above them.
“We’re… in the cabin right? Of the ship?” Kastor felt the need to specify, still feeling slightly out of place and awkward.
“Yep, we’re below deck. I couldn’t put you in your bed though, Donna wanted you to stay near the infirmary so she could keep an eye on you.” Sailen explained, getting Kastor to realize that he wasn’t over in the sleeping area, but instead on the other side of the cabin where various crates were stored along with medical supplies.
“Right..” Kastor mumbled slightly absentmindedly. His thoughts were focused on trying to remember what happened during their cave investigation.
He decided to start from what he could recall happening first and then make his way towards the present. Okay… so we entered the cave, then we got jumped by the cultists, everyone split up to go fight, I got slammed against the wall, then I couldn’t breathe.. or talk.. or move…
“Hey.” The voice of Sailen snapped him out of the wave of horrible feelings from his memories. His eyes moved up to meet with Sailen’s, noticing how there was gentleness and concern in them instead of the usual energetic gaze.
Kastor felt his brain quickly scramble for a reply, an excuse, an explanation, anything. He couldn’t make himself look bad in front of these people, what if they decided that he was dead weight and abandoned him? Then he’d really be alone.
So many thoughts were plaguing Kastor, he felt like his head was going to explode from the onslaught.
What if he just got dumped off on a random island? What if everyone else already hated him and thought he was useless? Why was he even here? He’s nothing special, he’s not like them. What makes him worthy enough to be alive while his entire family died? I should've burned with them-
“Kastor.” Sailen stole his attention once more, catching him in the middle of tears he didn’t realize he was shedding.
He felt like crawling into a hole and dying, ashamed to be crying in front of Sailen. Now he was bound to be thought of as weak and pathetic.
However, the response he received was far from what he was expecting. A tender hand was placed on his shoulder, grounding his mind back down to the present.
“I’m gonna move you real quick, k? You look like you need this.” Sailen softly grabbed onto Kastor’s shoulders and sat him up.
Before Kastor could react to being shifted, he felt a pair of arms wrap around him and the warmth of a body behind him.
The feeling of comfort felt so far away, yet here it was. Kastor didn’t deserve this, he deserved to be mocked and ridiculed, why was he being hugged? His tear filled eyes leaked a few more tears out, relishing the comfort that felt so foreign.
“I don’t know why you’re crying. Maybe it’s from the stress of everything that just happened or something else. Either way, I’m here.” Sailen was surprisingly good at soothing Kastor’s frantic mind.
Kastor hadn’t expected Sailen to be this kind, or understanding. A part of him just assumed that Sailen was so far above him that he wouldn’t matter. But the demigod had proved him wrong.
They both simply sat in silence for a short while, Kastor drinking in the comfort and Sailen providing it. Afterwards, Sailen ruffled the top of Kastor’s hair and helped him to lay back down.
“You like watermelon? We grabbed some before we started sailing off towards the next island.” Sailen asked, seemingly offering some of the fruit to Kastor.
“Oh, yeah, I do actually.” The prospect of watermelon excited Kastor slightly. Getting to eat a sweet treat sounded great at the moment, even despite his throbbing throat.
“Good, good, we saved you some. I’ll head up and grab it, don’t go walking around while I’m gone!” Sailen joked half sarcastically at the end, managing to light up Kastor’s mood.
Sailen walked up the short stairs that led to the deck, giving a cheeky wave to Kastor before immediately entering whatever conversation was being had up top.
Despite the initial flurry of emotions, Kastor felt content now. Sailen did more than just comfort him, he made him feel welcomed. He made him feel less like a stranger, and more at home.
