A Just Woman and An Honourable Man

From chapter 18: Just outside of Fleabottom, Gendry, Ser Davos and Varys emerged from one of the sewers amid the general panic. Around them, people were running aimlessly in all directions, some dragging barefoot, traumatised children with them, others entering abandoned houses and grabbing whatever they could. Gendry, who had grown up in those same streets, was struggling to recognise that once familiar place, now transfigured by chaos, degradation and heaps of snow.

Spoilers without context for chapter 17

So, I remember this fanfiction I read ages ago, definitely before 2018, probably between 2010 and 2014. It was really great and I would love to read it again, only problem: I don't remember its title and I don't remember which website it was on, and I can't find it anywhere.

This is what I remember: - It was definitely at least 10 chapters long. - After the war Harry is crushed by guilt for everyone he couldn't save during the war with Voldemort, so he disappeares under his cloak and leaves the wizarding world behind. - The fanfiction is set some years later, Harry now lives in London (maybe Privet Drive, where the Dursleys never came back to? - not sure), works at a radio station (probably the BBC) and is raising Teddy Lupin on himself. Teddy could be between 3 and 7 years old. - There was a nanny helping him, she definitely knew Teddy could do magic, because he could change his hair colour like his mother, but I can't remember if the nanny was a witch, a squib or a muggle. - One day Harry meets Hermione by accident, she's super happy and wants him to come back in the wizarding world, but he doesn't. - Hermione tracks him down, and slowly helps him reconnect with everyone he left behind. - Ginny and/or Luna have an antiquary shop in London - Hermione is married to Ron - Ron is really hurt that Harry left them and at first doesn't want to talk with him again. (Hermione helps them) - George is married to either Luna or Angelina Johnson, and Fred's death has changed him, but if I remember correctly, he's not blaming Harry and will be a key figure to help him get back to the wizarding world. - Eventually Harry got together with Ginny again, there could have been some explicit scene between the two of them, but I'm not sure about it.

Young(er) paperinik got really into the Hunger Games at some point, so much so she plotted a full AU/Canon divergent fanfiction about the 75th Hunger Games. Young(er) paperinik wrote scenes, bits and pieces, but never completed her work because – honestly – all the "which-tribute-kills-who,-where-and-how-in-the-arena" was too much to plan and so the fanfiction was left and forgotten, abandoned in folders kept in the depth of her hard disk, where, one day of December 2024, I, the older and probably not wiser Paperinik, have found them, covered in pixelated dust.

But, oh, the tragedy!

Young(er) Paperinik felt ashamed of her fanfictions, and password protected her files in ways I cannot decipher today.

So now, I, older Paperinik, unashamed of my fanfiction works, I release what I can remember of this plot in the Universe, so that this prompt can inspire fellow un-ashamed fanfic authors.

Here we go: (full disclaimer, this was a Katniss/Peeta fanfic)

The Capitol is full on the wedding between Katniss and Peeta, they’ve transformed it in a reality show where everything is decided by the public vote (or Snow).

Gale hasn’t interacted much with Katniss since she has come back and the capitol is punishing the District 12 with harsher conditions.

It is announced that the tributes for the quarter quell will be reaped among the 19years old (something along the lines of “so that the district always remember their debt to the Capitol”)

The moment the announce is made, Katniss knows Gale will be the district 12 tribute.

The mentors activity will be filmed

There was some rule about Peeta having to be Gale’s mentor to add drama (Katniss can’t directly help him in the arena etc)

Katniss doesn’t want to hurt Gale, but has to go on with the wedding with Peeta and in the meantime she falls for him (arranged marriage, friends to lovers tags)

At some point during the games a smaller, truer wedding was celebrated between Katniss and Peeta in their headquarter, with only Cinna, Haymitch and Effie present. I’m pretty sure they made the bread ceremony or something (which was poetic because Peeta is a baker)

In the arena Gale falls in love with a girl from some other district and in the end he sacrifices to save her and let her win

I have absolutely no fucking recollection how I planned to end this story, but in some way I made the rebellion happen anyway (maybe it had to do with Gale’s sacrifice for someone from another district, which sent a message of unity? Or maybe he had a monologue..)

I'm done making promises on when I'll be back, but enjoy while it lasts, and know that even if I disappear for long times I always keep working on this WIP :) Hope you guys like it!

Update n.4 Just wanted to update everyone that I am working hard on The Battle of Riverrun. I don't want to hype the next few chapters too much, because, you know, best to keep expectations low, but I'm really excited about it! It's the most complex scene I've ever written and I really really really hope that your wait will be worth.

I hope to be able to post a snippet soon, but I'm still in the first draft phase, which is in broken English.

So, I had planned to post 2-3 chapters during the holidays but now I’ll have to wait and see how it goes, and maybe you’ll have to wait a little bit more..sorry!

Chapter 12 has entered the editing stage (yay me!), but I’m putting that on hold, because the next one (chapter 13) is the much awaited Battle of Riverrun and I feel I might reconsider which one goes first.

So, since I am a very very VERY slow writer, I was looking for a way to update my readers on what is going on behind the scene of my WIP, and I remebered I have this tumblr account that might turn out as useful.

So, as of today, chapter 12 is written and is entering the editing phase (yay!) I’m not making any promises on when I’ll be able to post it, but I’m also about to (finally) change my job for a position that should give me more free time (to write fanfics and do other fun stuff), so I guess what I’m trying to say is: please have faith!

If someone is reading this, the fanfic is a jaimexbrienne oriented rewrite/fix it of season 8.It picks up mid-Winterfell battle and then diverges right away.

Here’s the summary for those curious:
