What this Blog is About

Hi there! Welcome to our new blog QTPOC in Higher Education. We hope to create a space where Queer and/or Trans People of Color are able to get a glimpse of what it’s like to be qtpoc in higher education. We will try our best to provide resources, answer your questions, and share our stories.  

Why We Created this Blog

We believe that QTPOC should have access to higher education. This does not mean that we believe higher education is the best choice for everyone, nor do we want to impose any normative narratives of success. What it does mean is that we believe in self-determination and agency. If you want to/can go to college, then we are here to support you and offer as much information as we can. Our goal is to create a blog that we wish we had before coming to college.

Who We Are

Pan: “My name is Pan and I use She/They pronouns. While I was assigned male at birth, I currently identify as a trans latina, non-binary, fat activist. I am currently an incoming third year with a double major in Ethnic Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies. My work mainly revolves around QTPOC (Queer and/or Trans People of Color). I was the co-director of the 2016 Queer and/or Trans People of Color Conference and have started several clubs on my campus, such as the Non-Binary Alliance, Trans Tuesdays, and the Queer and/or Trans People of Color Collective. Right now I am putting all of my energy into creating a QTPOC Recruitment and Retention Center, where I hope to really tackle the struggles that our queer and/or trans students of color go through on a daily basis at UC Berkeley.”

Last minute advice:

To help calm down anxiety or brain fog, try writing down all the things you need to do then organize them from mote important to least important or by due date.

Don’t be afraid to be funny when writing down your notes. If something funny will help remember a certain fact then do it.

If you fail something don’t panic. You are not the first and certainly not the last.

Find out which way you learn the best and try to learn through that.

My teacher once explained that she wrote all her notes down and placed them every where she would see them, even in the shower.

If you are worried about certain issues then don’t be afraid to talk to your teacher.

We should have the same visceral disgust when Barack and Michelle Obama mobilise the image of their daughters growing up in a house built by poor black slaves in defense of 'the greatest country on earth’: where dozens of unarmed black people are killed by rabid police every week; where forced labour and mass incarceration of black men surrogates for modern slavery; where the Obama administration has deported more migrant workers than any other; where blinking mainframes run unmanned drones which kill Yemeni children; where poor urban communities are forced to poison themselves and their children with lead-tainted water.

The only response which ex-social democrats have left in the face of nascent fascism, having imbibed 40 years’ worth of neoliberal Kool Aid, is liberal chauvinism: the slow-motion murder of working-class, black and LGBT communities, justified by an illusory moral unity based on the leadership of black capitalist elites and female incarceration-mad war hawks. Identity politics has provided the perfect language in which to articulate a new language of common cause, stripped of its social content by trendy speechwriters, papering over the glaring class divides which cleave into America’s soul, inverted and weaponised against the working-class, socialist, labour movement theoreticians who devised it to meld Marxism and black struggle into a seamless whole. In seeking to say everything to all people, the Democrats now say nothing to nobody: not merely fiddling whilst Rome burns, but justifying inaction by the gender of the fiddler.
