C'est la vie, It's literal translation is :This Is Life.

But French people use it more in a way when something bad or wrong happens in any front like academics, profession, relationship.. Any phase of life, they use it basically in an imperative tone to denote Life.That this is life which full of sorrows as well as happiness. So this is indeed an Irony. “C'est la vie.”
