Something something Erid is a high-pressure, no light planet with liquid water and bioluminescent, lure-based, energy efficient ocean creatures could develop; something something Eridians have close to no spatial memory and therefore worse scale? memory; something something Eridians are the apex land predator specifically.
(All that, and I forgot the suit. Ah well. Point is, they deserve a buddy comedy ending.)
Grace and Rocky, giving a tour of the Hail Mary to fascinated Eridian scientists and diplomats.
Pointing at things and explaining what they are and how the ship works, lots of awed and appreciative noises are made.
Until one of the visiting Eridians points out a specific item. “And that?”
It’s a strange, circular thing, a xenonite disk mounted upright on some sort of pivot so it can spin freely, but around the edges it has… spokes? Pegs? Sticking out of it, that hit against a stiff flap that would slow down the spinning.
It is also separated into sections decorated with crude etchings of a human and an Eridian.
“Ah,” Grace says.
“That,” Rocky says.
“That’s. Um.” Grace seems somewhat embarrassed. “That’s the sacrifice wheel.”
The Eridian visitors clearly do not know what to make of that. “We think we misunderstood Savior Grace’s word,” they say, apparently hoping this is a vocabulary mix-up. “Explain (question, polite)?”
“Didn’t misunderstand,” says Rocky, sounding very sheepish. “That is sacrifice wheel.”
“So. While we were on our way to Erid, we might have gotten… anxious about each other’s well-being,” Grace says, which everyone is already very aware is a wild understatement. “And, well, you heard what happened at Tau Ceti, and after. There were a lot of unexpected dangers for the whole trip that required a lot of, at least, attempted self-sacrifice to solve. We ended up almost dying for each other several times. And we had an argument about what we’d do if another crisis like that came up. And we couldn't agree.”
“Grace argued that Grace already was unlikely to survive long-term on Erid, so he should be the one to do any potential deadly but necessary maneuvers to make sure I was able to bring taumoeba back,” Rocky says.
“Which made sense.”
“Did not make sense! Grace already sacrificed so much for me and for Erid, wouldn’t be fair to make you do it again—“ Rocky cuts himself off with a huff. They have obviously had this conversation before. “So sacrifice wheel was compromise.”
“Yeah,” Grace says. He spins it to demonstrate; it whirls around in a blur and a rattle of the flap hitting the pegs, then eventually slows down, and stops—pointing at the segment depicting a very bad but very clear image of an Eridian. “Rocky made the wheel, I spin the wheel, and whoever it lands on, that’s who gets to sacrifice themself to save the other and the other person does not get to argue. This way, we wouldn’t waste time debating who does the self-sacrifice and who survives, it’s just a plain fifty-fifty chance. Or, eighteen-eighteen chance in base six. But the point is it could be either of us and we would have to accept the outcome.”
Rocky started fidgeting while Grace was explaining. When Grace finishes, proud of the equitable solution they came up with to allow them to die for each other fairly, Rocky says, “Now that we are back and we don’t need sacrifice wheel anymore… I have confession to make. About the wheel.”
“What about the wheel?”
Rocky doesn’t answer. Grace frowns, first confused, then suspicious, and spins the wheel again.
It lands on Rocky again.
He spins the wheel again, and again, and again, and it lands on Rocky every single time.
“Rocky!”
“I weighted the wheel,” Rocky admits.
“Rocky the whole point was that it was equal, that was why we even made it—“
“Never was necessary so doesn’t matter anymore!”
“But you WOULD have!”
“And you never noticed because you were hungry and cranky and distracted and so would have done bad job on heroic self-sacrifice anyway!”
“I would not! I would have done fine!”
(The Eridian scientists and diplomats are still here watching this btw. Slowly dawning on them that 1) these two are extremely not normal about each other 2) if Erid ever does another space mission they NEED to send a therapist aboard because this is what happens when they don’t)

Satan’s Goldfish (Shaiton Machii) is a very strange organism found in the pelagic zone of the open ocean between Hech and West Pecora. This animal is poorly understood, it is known to be a member of Octamembrina, clade sister to Octamembrina which holds all Earth-like Palubolígolian vertebrates.
Satan’s Goldfish swim in large groups and filter feed by capturing food on their two long pairs of bristled frontal limbs, which they periodically rake through their lateral jaws. The animal seems to have two anal exits at the sides of its rear in between its hind limbs. Why that is is not understood.
These animals vocalise in speech-like patterns but it is not known if they are intelligent or not.
"Of all the genetically-enhanced but now-feral Earth livestock introduced across the numerous planets under the jurisdiction of the Terran-Inoverran Alliance, none are quite as bizarre and fascinating as the Hive Goat (Capra myrmex) introduced to the small colony world of Farmius-B. Descended from livestock bred by intergalactic agricultural colonies for its much higher fecundity and tremendously increased milk yield compared to an unaltered goat, the Hive Goat became a tremendous surprise to the scientific cimmunity when, observed 26,000 years after its introduction by a visiting manned probe from the Interstellar Biological Research Organization (IBRO), a wild population was discovered to have had naturally evolved a unique social structure similar to that of many insects.
Dwelling in sheltered caves, either natural or excavated by the goats themselves, the colony numbering in herds of up to three thousand or more individuals centers around a single breeding female, the queen. Its forebears selected for more porcine-like reproductive rates, the queen goat is able to give birth to litters of about a dozen or more at a time, bearing young up to six times a year, thanks to a two-horned uterus that can carry two separate litters at once, a trait theorized to have been a result from the inclusion of rabbit DNA into its genome. While only one single female breeds, satellite females act as nurses: also lactating milk of their own (albeit with smaller udders and fewer functional teats) to continue rearing older litters when the queen has birthed a new batch, as well as grooming and tending to the queen herself.
Males too have a role to play in the Hive Goat colony, with younger males acting as diggers and workers, using their forward-pointing horns as shovels to expand their nest. Older males, with very large and imposing horns, act as soldiers, defending the foragers from predators and rival Hive Goat colonies as they emerge to graze, as well as guarding the entrance of their home. A rare type of male, the antelope-like disperser male, leaves the colonies upon maturity and leads a solitary life out in the open, visiting different colonies from time to time to mate with their queen. He is the only male that breeds, for reasons yet unclear, and seems to be essential to maintain genetic diversity of the species.
The most abundant of the castes however, are foragers, which are a mix of males and females and are stunted in development at a neotenic state: due to hormones present in the milk and droppings of the queen and nurse goats that inhibit their sexual maturity. It is currently unknown how these biochemical triggers work, only that the maturation is merely delayed, not halted: eventually, male foragers can further specialize into dispersers, or diggers and later soldiers, and females can further specialize into nurses or even new queens. Mostly, however, foragers emerge from the cave in large herds to graze on the abundance of grass and other vegetation. Their rumen, or fermenting stomach, has now evolved to function like a social stomach or crop, with them regurgitating balls of chewed and predigested cud to feed the queen, the young and other members of the colony.
It is unknown what circumstances caused these genetically engineered feral goats to adopt such a bizarre lifestyle, found only in the likes of ants, bees, termites and mole-rats, especially to display such marked polymorphism between the castes. Among the presented, though much-debated and not universally-accepted, theories for their unique evolution include inserted genetic material from other livestock species such as rabbits, pigs and salmon, a side effect of natural selection making a use of their enhancement to breed quickly and produce large quantities of milk, tampering by an advanced intelligent outside force (Inoverran, Xailan, Ptian or otherwise), or perhaps as a defense mechanism against the numerous native alien predators of the planet, such as the Beta-Farmian Chupacabra, which has been observed to use its narrow, sucking snout and long tongue to raid the nests and feed on colonies of Hive Goats in a manner reminiscent of the Terran aardvark. Ultimately, further research and genetic analysis will need to be conducted to discover the secrets of this enigmatic species, and whether it has the potential to be beneficial or harmful to the ecosystem of Farmius-B, or if it may possess properties of interest to scientific, agricultural and medical communities should the species be exported off-world."

the scariest thing about old tv isnt really the racism or the sexisim because you kinda go in braced for that it's all the scenes where suddenly an actress is holding a lion cub or a chimpanzee is in the same room as a toddler, or suddenly theres a lion, or there's a chimpanzee again but it's driving a car, or holding a lighter, or holding fireworks. You just kind of watch in horror as over and over an actress performs with only 1960s tv film shootings best animal handling between her and the opening to Nope.
The Omenuruk (Forcipcorvus sicarius) is a fascinating Corvid native to the Abyss. Most likely a descendant of the Death Omen (Corvus mortis) the Omenuruk is an inhabitant of the Umbra layer of the Abyss. This predator feeds mostly on Overworld creatures and prefers to swallow its prey whole.
The wings of the Omenuruk resemble those of a Mantis, but the bird doesn’t use them for capture but for slashing as if it held swords. It is a remarkably fast animal, able to jump out of the shadows and slash its target in half in milliseconds. Another peculiar feature are the two pairs of tongues in the lower jaw and three individual ones in the upper jaw. These tongues are very prehensile and are actually more similar to the use of tentacles in Octupusssies than the tongues of other Corvids. These tongues are durable and allow the Omenuruk to prepare its prey before feeding. Another interesting ability of the Omenuruk is to look forward through the insides of its mouth when it is opened.
Omenuruk do often prey on humans, but they are also very intelligent animals and are very willing to Fate to an Umbradomus. Their high intelligence (likely the smartest non-human animal on Earth) makes them very useful Fatebondeds, the Omenuruk can be tasked to do many things, from running for groceries to murder.
*Slight NSFW ahead*
Omenuruk are very willing to please their Umbradomus and in history there are many records of Omenuruk being in sexual relations with their masters. As the records go the birds initiate the behaviour, usually using their tongues to pleasure their Fated.

On my art blog is where you'll find them stylized and as characters, but if you wanna see them in their wild forms, check out my photo blog! Also here's the introduction to Multicolored Coral Champions, the world where these characters belong to!
Well overdue house keeping for my two blogs. I have another blog where I post macro photos I took of crustaceans from my dives and tidepooling, and specimen photos of dead ones as well! Sometimes sea slugs also appear on the blog. Should be of little surprise coming from the artist obsessed with marine life.

This design is based on Neave Parker's paintings he did back in the 1950s. Something weirdly charismatic about the way his dinosaurs are just giant slabs of rigid rocks.
The Lesser Airhead (Tapejanodon Turonensis intermedius) is a species of Paluazhdarchoid found across the lowlands of Archipell.
This animal like its relatives is poorly understood, members of the Supergenus Tapejanodon have clear wing and crest membranes which they can colour by flooding them with blood. In many species these membranes sport patterns quite similar to teeth and eyes.
Airheads are usually solitary animals, feeding on fruit and an occasional small animal while climbing through the canopy of great trees. Should two individuals meet outside of the breeding season they usually vocalise and ignore each other. Airheads in general are quite passive animals, keeping calm even when chased by dragons.
This is a very old drawing of Tapejanodon with Pí’s prototype from about 2017-2019. Here you can see the membranes flushed with blood showing the threat display.
Drawing of Orangebeak Airhead (Tapejanodon Turonensis gracilis) same as in the previous picture I made in 2021 as one of my first digital drawings… it looks so bad.
