I got my first cellphone in the fall of 2008. I was 29 years old. I thought cellphones were a fad and I hated them with a passion. I hated who people became when they had one. Distracted. No manners. But we had one car with a dented door from an accident, and I had a baby and husband worked like half an hour away. We shared the car and sort of shared the phone and we still had a landline that included a very very long 1980s cord because I didn't like cordless ones. I got an iPhone in 2012 when we moved across the country so I could use the maps feature to find out where the fuck I was. I didn't use it a ton, but that was definitely the gateway to now. What a different turn life takes. I still like using my computer over using my phone, but like everyone else I use my phone a whole lot. I try to have manners but my teenage son insists on FaceTime when he calls me, so I'm that person talking briefly on FaceTime in public. I still like talking on the phone (I have a friend who I talk with for like 2 hours a pop!) and I like FaceTiming and doing Marco Polos so I can see the people I love. My autistic husband is overjoyed that thanks to technology he basically never has to call anyone or talk with anyone ever, but I'd rather call a company on the phone than use an app or the internet. It took me a long time to adapt but texting is amazing too. Just thinking about that today.
