Though I appreciate art and I really enjoy museums, I’ve never really enjoyed art museums. Luckily though I really enjoyed the Van Gogh Museum. It isn’t your typical art museum where there are walls and walls of paintings by artists you’ve never heard of before. 

The museum follows the life of Vincent Van Gogh who after experiencing many different careers decided to become an artist at the age of 27. It follows his travels around the Netherlands and France and shows the change in his art along with it. He went from dark paintings like The Potato Eaters to much lighter paintings like his famous Sunflowers.

The museum also showcases the letters that Vincent had sent to many of his family members. Especially to his brother Theo whom he had a very close relationship with. The decline of Vincent’s health is also a very prominent theme in the museum outlining the famous ear incident and the events that eventually led to his death.

Reading about Van Gogh’s history and feelings helps you connect with his paintings more than you would if you just saw them hanging up in a museum among paintings from other artists. 

I highly recommend a visit to the Van Gogh Museum so you can see for yourself his beautiful paintings and learn about his tragic life.
