Justin McElroy talking about accessibility in live theatre (June 9, 2019)
“Art is happening everywhere all of the time” but an awful lot of it seems to only ever happen in New York and London, doesn’t it?
Unless your enjoyment of theatre is based in the idea that you get to do it and The Poors don’t and that’s why it’s fun for you, how does other people getting to experience recordings of it make it worse? Like why would anybody be against that. “Oh it’s better in person” yeah and concerts are often more fun than listening to CDs, so what? There’s absolutely no reason why people in other places and circumstances shouldn’t get to experience art.
“Theatre is ephemeral” Yeah, and even if it’s recorded, there will be dozens or hundreds of performances of it which aren’t. One recording doesn’t stop those other experiences being ephemeral.
Seeing theatre in person is generally better than watching a recording, but watching a recording is infinitely never getting to see something at all.
I have been lucky enough to live in places with a decent local theatre community. I live within driving distance of pretty well known and respected theatre communities, and have been able to see plays in them both. That being said- there are plays I’ve never seen that I desperately wanted to but couldn’t because of geography, money, etc. There have been plays I’ve seen multiple times because luck and money and love of that play specifically was on my side. The plays I’ve seen repeatedly? Every single time was different. Every one. I’ve seen it recorded, too. Different recordings, even. (It’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, btw. Not my Favourite play but it’s up there on the list and accessible to find locally) Now with all this said? *Recordings of live plays* absolutely should be available, especially the big ones. Because good art *should* be accessible to everyone. And yes, going to the theatre is a wonderful experience that I would love everyone to have but I recognize there’s a million different reasons why not everyone can. But sharing art doesn’t lessen the art. It changes the experience, but are these people arguing that theatre should only be seen live… are they going to agree that movies should only ever be seen in a cinema, not at home, on your tv or your phone? Because that is a different form of art, that’s now being experienced differently because it is not being experienced in the intended ideal experience. Same thing with recordings of plays. Put them out there. Plays, ballets, operas, everything. Let it be seen.

before you make fun of a person doing something brave and vulnerable like dancing or singing or reading poetry in front of a lot of people:

I second this!! And I honestly feel this personally
fascinated by teddy bleuger being like wow I took so much for granted when I was in sid’s locker room… like that guys would show up to practice on time and work hard and behave respectfully towards each other & the staff. I just kind of thought that was how adult professionals acted until I got traded to the canucks
“We gotta stay out of that shit. They like that, those guys, that’s how they get in the game. Just leave ‘em.”
