Once an esteemed member of the scientific community and one of the co-founders of Gray Matter Technologies, Walter White sold his share of the company before they hit big to gather enough money to help with starting a family with his beloved wife, Skyler White. His plans were to spill a fraction of his teaching paycheck into his savings, bit by bit, until he could buy his share back.

Of course, Gray Matter Technologies stock rose virtually overnight and became a multi-billion dollar entity long before he could follow through with that plan. Initially happy for his friends, bitter resentment ebbed away slowly at him, but Walter continued pushing it off to the side. It was just the way things had played out. Everything would be okay – he and Skyler were perfectly capable of supporting themselves and Walter Jr. – and then one day, the bubble burst.

                                     Lung cancer. Inoperable.

Living paycheck to paycheck, with a death sentence growing in his lungs, Walter took to working on an old project, born out of a vision – a time machine. It seemed like something out of a science fiction movie, but with his expertise with sciences and his determination for success, he knew it could become so much more – and it did. In exchange for plutonium to power the flux capacitor, he used his knowledge of chemistry to cook his contacts (courtesy of former student and partner in science, Jesse Pinkman) a batch of crystal meth – the purity was incomparable.

It was to be his saving grace – take the plutonium, go back in time, and keep himself from withdrawing his share of Gray Matter in order to better sustain his family and afford necessary treatment for his illness. Temporal experiment number one was everything he could have anticipated.

His contacts returning for more meth was not. After refusing to cook more, he was gunned down and killed – and Jesse, being a witness to the crime, was chased after. In a panic, he jumps into the DeLorean and in the process of escape, hits 88 miles per hour, effectively powering the flux capacitor and sending him to the year 1985.
