I think one of the main reasons RP speak with the *'s and whatnot feels so weird to read is because its so different from the system that English has been using for god knows how long.

in English writing, we use quotes for speech, italics for thoughts and everything else is plain text (as far as I'm aware at least, I'm not an English major)

as opposed to RP speak where speech is plain text, actions are marked by asterisks and I don't even KNOW what the deal is with italics.
