Disjointed Research Machine from Imagination of Things on Vimeo.

The Disjointed Research Machine is a digital experiment with the Joint Research Centre - European Commission database of science reports to explore playful possibilities to spark conversation on the edges of its knowledge. It asks participants to set up a provocative challenge and respond to it by rearranging quotes parsed from the data. Built using semantic similarity, the machine gives each participant a score. Sometimes unreasonable, always playful.

This project was created and produced by Imagination of Things and it was commissioned by the European Commission - Joint Research Centre for the Resonances III Datami Festival and Exhibition at Bozar, Brussels.

Phrase Fighter, a game-metaphor of our public conversation online from Imagination of Things on Vimeo.

You choose a source of information, extract just a few phrases that have similarities with your “belief filters”, and in the end, none of it really matters because it’s all about shooting the opponents’ words.

It could be a description of our public conversation online. But it's Phrase Fighter, a two-player shooting game using words.

The game curates the quotes from a user-submitted link based on its semantic similarity to five preset filters (some great and disturbing voices of our time). The player then chooses a quote to be their phrase fighter.

The player invites an opponent by sending an invitation link, initiating a classic “space shooting” game, two phrases against each other, where the goal is to eliminate each other’s word.

The performance prompts people to complete one simple task several times in a local assembly line, in exchange for one of the objects that they have, in a small way, contributed to the making of. Het Ware Noorden is a label that promotes creative re-use sessions and its resulting products. It connects De Ceuvel with the craftsmen and artists from Amsterdam North. Project created by 72U.

I saw a word naked today. I stayed still, trying to be polite, waiting for it to get dressed again. But that made the word feel so comfortable, it liked my silence. When I realized - a word that likes silence - I smiled. The word liked my smile. That made me feel comfortable so I stopped trying to be polite. We stayed there staring at each other. I wanted to say something. But what can I say to a naked word? The word liked that I wanted to say something but I didn't. I felt the texture of the body of a naked word. A naked word has no language. It just belongs.

"In truth, though, what I crave at this point in my life is to speak more clearly what it is that I believe. It is not that I am tired of poetic truth, or that I feel it to be somehow weaker or less true than reason. The opposite is the case. Inspiration is to thought what grace is to faith: intrusive, transcendent, transformative, but also evanescent and, all too often, anomalous. A poem can leave its maker at once more deeply seized by existence and, in a profound way, alienated from it, for as the act of making ends — as the world that seemed to overbrim its boundaries becomes, once more, merely the world — it can be very difficult to retain any faith in that original moment of inspiration at all. The memory of that momentary blaze, in fact, and the art that issued from it, can become a reproach to the fireless life in which you find yourself most of the time. Grace is no different. (Artistic inspiration is sometimes an act of grace, though by no means always.) To experience grace is one thing; to integrate it into your life is quite another. What I crave now is that integration, some speech that is true to the transcendent nature of grace yet adequate to the hard reality in which daily faith operates. I crave, I suppose, the poetry and the prose of knowing."

- Early for what? So you do know the way? How do you know it will be early or late when you get there?
