I’m cairophoenix on ao3, where I currently write a lot of Imodna fic.
Recent & favorites:
I Prefer Girls (62k, 7/? chapters), a 1950s AU and my current WIP. Imogen is closeted, Laudna writes fix-its for lesbian pulps, and the city’s clandestine gay bar is right underneath Imogen’s new apartment. See a book cover by @astoriacolumnstaircase here!
every thought's a possibility (57k, seven chapters, completed), a canon-divergent fake dating fic set after the party separation and a reunion in Rexxentrum. Check out art by @avalencias from Chapter 3 and by @astoriacolumnstaircase from Chapter 6.
Capable, Exalted: A Primary Source History of the Ruidian Solstice (15k one-shot), an epistolary fic that tells Imogen and Laudna's entire story, from pre-campaign to post-campaign, in the form of Laudna's journal entries. Featuring art by @rachandroll throughout.
More below the fold!
and we’ll share my all is a 7k fic set in the Dusk era, featuring a great deal of jealous Imogen, puppetry angst, Pâté as coping mechanism, and Laudna figuring out her feelings. Here is some amazing art that @avalencias did of it!
bittersweet, sly, uncontrollable is 7k of mutually confused pining on the theme of “five times Laudna didn’t access that part of her brain, and one time she did.”
black and all blue is a 3k character study of Imogen’s guilty, self-blaming wrath and the way it explodes outwards.
until the mosses take root in thunder is 6k of Imogen poorly crafting Laudna a Definitely Platonic Engagement Ring. Here is more amazing @avalencias art and here is some incredible @rachandroll art.
the truth must dazzle gradually is a 4.5k fic about Laudna sorting through her feelings for Imogen the night before the solstice, and Pâté helping her figure it all out.
Home, Made is a 6.5k precanon fic about crafting, homesickness, and learning to live together.
dreams of you and mistletoe is a 13k holiday modern AU co-written with @lorrxrai.
Seaside Rendezvous (7k one-shot), a post-finale fic set at during a beach week before Jester’s wedding, while Laudna frantically tries to propose (re-retro-propose?) to Imogen before Imogen can do the same. Light-hearted, silly, fun.
And WAY back in the day I wrote a Sanvers publishing AU called Track Changes and a Lydia/Gigi (Lizzie Bennet Diaries) fic called from the dark with you above, on the off-chance that that’s why you’re here!

In the middle of the campaign four rewatch and may the dead gods damn it, I am still hung up on the loose thread of the fake Misty Step glyph.
Regardless of how the party split played out, regardless of any claims that Azune is ‘clean’ in the Cooldown, I simply cannot buy it. This has to be Brennan pulling another ‘ha ha yeah I was lying about Yanessa making death saving throws :)’ set up. Because there is no way, absolutely none, that Lt. Azune Nayar was not clocked by whoever set up the glyph.
In the opening scene of the execution, the area is packed with people. All the Sundered Houses are present. Thjazi is marched over to Azune by Tachonis soldiers. As in the house personally responsible for using Casimir’s betrayal to sabotage Thjazi’s escape plan. Whoever planted the fake glyph which was intended to register during an arcane scan had to know the Arcane Marshal doing the scan was 1) A conspirator planning to throw the scan and 2) Wasn’t just some hired corrupt magic cop, but someone willing to take the fall while surrounded on all sides by Revolutionary Guard and Sundered House forces; i.e., a direct ally to Thjazi Fang and his fellows. There is no way they wouldn’t be paying attention to who that Arcane Marshal was!
And yet nothing comes of it. At first I tried to explain it away as House Tachonis simply shrugging off a commoner loose thread, being so busy with other schemes, but I don’t think I can buy it anymore. Not when they threw a whole manhunt at Demodus Blix. Not when they let Casimir live to reach his little squalid barony instead of killing him outright. For as fast and loose as Primus was in the last scene we got of him going full fuck this fuck you fuck all of this we have to get out of town now now now, House Tachonis might be corner-cutting, but they don’t leave loose threads when they’re aware of them. And Azune is right there! Azune has BEEN there, his name showing up in all the paperwork to do with the Palazzo Davinos massacre and the Tachonis investigation! He should be on their radar twice over!
Unless, somehow, Tachonis wasn’t aware of Azune’s role in the way we’ve been assuming. Because all they could be aware of was what Casimir was aware of. And what information do we know for certain Casimir gave up?
Thimble and the hideout location. The Crow Keepers broke in, knocked Thimble out, stole the Stone of Nightsong.
Occtis’ involvement with Thaisha as part of the getaway wagon. Occtis is marked as not only a sacrificial component, but a traitor to their house. Ethrand calls him such.
Talcydimir as a fellow driver, though after the fact. Cyd runs off with the Sloak deed and gets caught later in Timmony.
And the Misty Step glyph. We know for certain that he mentioned the use of a glyph for Thjazi to escape to the other side of the wall, otherwise that fake glyph would not be there.
But there’s a snag.
If Casimir had said, “They’ve got an Arcane Marshal working for them on the inside. They’re supposed to throw the arcana scan and check to make sure the glyph’s in place before Thjazi gets to the noose,” that would explain the illusory arcane signature on the glyph. It doesn’t explain the vacuum of repercussions for the Arcane Marshal in question, who the enemy would have had eyes out for.
Instead, what if all Casimir gave them was, “They’re going to plant a Misty Step glyph on Thjazi so he can get to the other side of the wall,” with no mention of a mole in the Arcane Marshals at all? It would make sense! Especially considering one of the few things Thjazi told Azune during their Message chat was an apology for keeping his distance. And we’ve since learned that it wasn’t just Thjazi. Thimble kept that same distance to the point that she doesn’t even know where Azune lives. Mara the Wing didn’t recognize him. I’d bet money that nobody short of fellow Falconer rebels and Torn Banner crew would clock Azune Nayar as anything other than a straightforward Arcane Marshal of the Guard, full stop.
And if Azune Nayar’s name wasn’t on anyone else’s radar—if Casimir himself didn’t know to give up that name, despite serving alongside the kid in the war—then we can assume that whoever was doing the bulk of the coordinating for the plan, likely Thimble, was still maintaining Azune’s secret status. Either Cas was so checked out and jaded over the failed promise of the rebellion that he assumed Azune Nayar really had washed his hands of Thjazi Fang and moved on to a career that let him see his former leader hanged, or he was so distant from the whole thing that he had no clue Azune was with the Arcane Marshals at all.
But hey! The sabotage worked either way! Snap!
Casimir washed his hands of it and went to pay his debts and have a drink.
House Tachonis moved on to the rest of their busy itinerary.
And Thjazi Fang was hanged with an unbroken fake glyph in his coat.
A fake glyph that should pointedly not have shown up on Arcane Marshal’s scan at all if Casimir’s notion of the plan went through. Because if Casimir had no clue there was an ally in the Arcane Marshals in on the escape, Tachonis didn’t either. And so the glyph was supposed to be there only to fool Thjazi, likely passed off the same way his blood-paint for the Hallowed Round was meant to be hidden under an illusion of weakness. As far as Casimir and Tachonis knew, the escape plan was meant to involve a Misty Step on the glyph, but with a magic cover on it that wouldn’t get a blip from anyone in the Arcane Marshals doing a scan.
Which means, if that glyph were left alone, Azune would have picked up on an issue in the scan, simply because it would reveal no magical ping to announce the escape plan was on track. The absence of a ping would have made him hit the brakes and pass the emergency on to Thjazi in Message, maybe scrambling for a plan B.
Meaning somebody else caught the mistake before it was too late and slapped the Misty Step illusion on the glyph before Azune could catch the empty scan. Somebody who recognized Azune Nayar as Thjazi’s ally before Thjazi even made it into the Tachonis wagon; a man on the inside about to pull a martyr play…
…and then, when the execution went through, that same person did not rat Azune out to anyone. Not to the Tachonis, not to the Crow Keepers. Nobody.
This same person was not only involved with the Tachonis plot, but had to be able to get that fake Misty Step stamp on the glyph immediately upon learning Lt. Nayar was the Arcane Marshal doing the scan. Someone who would have that magic locked and loaded already. Someone who Thjazi Fang wouldn’t raise an eyebrow over getting in close enough to plant the glyph on him, coming as a friend or a bribed hireling or else someone wearing invisibility outright. Someone who has held their tongue for going on two weeks without giving up Azune’s role.
Which is all to say:
I don’t think Casimir Gavendale was the only traitor in the heroes’ midst with a Thjazi-shaped bone to pick; and this one is still quietly holding a sword over Azune’s head whether he knows it or not.
“Oh, we caught on. It wasn't the what of what he was doing. We knew he was doing something, just didn't have all the context. That's what several centuries of planning will do for you. If anything it should just go to show you how tricky he is. Just watch yourself.”-Beau/Caleb
Something I really enjoy about Halsha as a ship in Campaign 4 is that they are a really good and nuanced depiction of a type of polyamorous relationship often referred to in the community as "comet partners." Comet partners do not live together, and spend time together only occasionally. Like a comet passing by the sun, they are bound by gravity and a shared orbit, but the comet comes close to the sun only intermittently.
My read of Halsha is that they never "broke up" in the traditional monogamy sense of the word, but rather transitioned from being nesting partners (partners who live together) to comet partners, and remained as comet partners even as Hal shacked up with a new nesting partner (Elodie) and subsequently ended that relationship. In my many ways, this is an even harder thing to do than "breaking up" in the traditional sense. When you break up, the relationship is over. When you change from nesting partners to comet partners, you have to completely rewrite the terms and norms of your relationship, while trying to preserve the core of what you love about your relationship in the first place. It's even more complicated when you're co-parents, and you have to rewrite the terms of your relationships to the kids as well.
There is a saying in the polyamorous community: "Love is infinite, but time is not." This leads to interesting dynamics between comet partners. What I've noticed from my own experience (I have two comet partners) is that there is an incentive to focus only on the positive when you're together. You don't get to see each other much, so you just want to spend the precious time you have reveling in the joy of being together again. There is a temptation to push aside and ignore any problems in your relationship, because you don't want to ruin your precious short time together, and besides, it can be easier to live with problems in your relationship when you don't have them in your face every single day.
I see this exact dynamic at play with Hal and Thaisha.
Whenever they reunite, they are so joyful and so thrilled. It's really touching to see. At the same time, their relationship has subtle problems that they are choosing to put to the side, both because of All the Shit Happening and because they just want to enjoy each other while they can.
One of the issues that I see between them that they have chosen not to address is that they label their relationship, or conceptualize their relationship, in different ways. In episode 27, the Photarch says to Hal, "I understand, Mr. Fang, that you have brought a woman that I know to be actually your love, yes?"
Watch this moment. It's a little awkward.
Thaisha just smiles broadly and nods. Meanwhile, Hal grimaces awkwardly and says, "We're family, yes."
I'm not sure exactly what's going on in Hal's head here, but it seems to me that either a) he prefers the label "family" to "love" for the relationship between him and Thaisha, and he feels awkward that Thaisha is not on the same page as him about that; or b) he would like there to be one label for what they are in private, and a different label for what they are as far as the broader world and the Sundered Houses are concerned, and he's chagrined that the public image of their relationship is not what he wants people like Yanessa to perceive, while Thaisha is unconcerned about this. Either way, this is something that the two of them ought to communicate about, but they haven't.
The other clear issue that lies between them is that Hal's mental health has severely declined since Thjazi's death, but he has kept this issue firmly under wraps in Thaisha's presence. Hal has been hiding things from Shadia and Hero (e.g., sending Shadia off to go live with Elodie without explaining why), even as Shadia and Hero get increasingly involved with Schemer business, which Thaisha has a right to know about as a co-parent in the polycule. He's also had some awful and worrying episodes with regards to his mental health while she was out of the city, such as his whole PTSD nightmare experience in the sewers, and his angry crashout over Thjazi in episode 24, and he hasn't talked to her about any of these negative feelings or problems, even though they are severe. Throughout the convergence, in front of her, he's just been the visionary artist, the burgeoning revolutionary, the proud dad, and the starry-eyed lover, not the scarred veteran or the grieving brother.
I totally understand why this is going on, because I do it myself with my comet partners! I run that calculation of "what percentage of my precious time with this person do I want to turn into a big bummer over my messy feelings" weighed against "how much damage it will do to this relationship long term if I don't bring up my messy feelings." But I wanted to point it out because it's an interesting and realistic nuance to this relationship.

i'll forever miss how the internet felt before you had to second-guess the authenticity of every single piece of media you came across. silly videos used to be just silly. fun was coincidental. wonder was just wonder. digital art had character and soul. AI has taken the taste out of everything and irreversibly poisoned the creative sphere and the people still pushing it forward are the doom of both joy and the quality of being.
how do i go about my day and not tell everyone i see that it’s the anniversary of the time two imaginary characters kissed for the first time on my favorite d&d show
