Honestly, I think Knuckles just wanted an excuse to be in Sonic’s arms
I mean, he decidedly did not jump to the left, AWAY from the explosion, rather, jumping CLOSER to it, after waiting a moment and making the decision to jump into Sonic’s arms.
So, yeah, I think you’re right @boomgoestheprower.
Also of note is that Sonic continues to carry him after the fact, while knuckles puts his hand on his head like it’s no big deal.
The second point is what gets me. Sonic doesn’t even question it. It’s like yep, this is normal. I mean, I get that it leads to them falling back into the well, but it’s still weird. It’s like when Sonic tries to clean the stain on the couch. It would make more sense to go over to the other side instead of leaning way too close over your friend’s lap. But it’s easier for the animators to do and you wind up with these awkward moments.
Awkward, but perfectly welcome.
