sophia freezes with one hand on the blanket.

''what?''

''you're acting like i'm going to snap at you.''

y/n raises an eyebrow at the younger girl.

sophia lets go of the blanket, turns to her, and sighs.

''okay. maybe a little.''

something inside y/n's chest twists.

she's still upset. she meant what she said yesterday and this morning, but this isn't what she wanted either.

''fia.''

the filipina looks at her with a questioning glance.

''you don't have to be scared, okay?''

sophia looks at her, really looks at her, before lowering her gaze to her fingers, twirling them anxiously.

''i just don't want to hurt you again.''

y/n's gaze drops to sophia's hands, noticing the nervous habit.

''then think before you do things.''

there's silence between them, thick with a tension that has never been there before.

''i will.''

y/n gently smiles at her, not fully forgiving the girl, but willing to.

sophia smiles back, grateful.

their quiet moment is broken by sophia's phone buzzing on the couch between them.

y/n sees mila's name before she can stop herself from looking, her stomach tightening.

sophia sees her see it and immediately turns the phone face down.

y/n exhales and even though it pains her, nods toward the phone.

''answer her.''

sophia shakes her head.

''it's okay.''

''i'm not mad that mila exists.''

sophia's mouth opens and closes before she settles on what to say.

a tiny, embarrassed smile becomes visible on the filipina's face.

despite herself, y/n giggles.

some of the tension leaves sophia's shoulders at the sound.

''you don't have to ignore her when you're with me. that was never what i wanted.''

y/n stops, not being able to put her feelings into words.

sophia waits.

y/n hates that she's suddenly nervous.

the smile disappears from sophia's face.

sophia shifts closer, but stops inches before their bodies could touch.

she just waits.

and somehow, that makes it easier for y/n to move first.

she smiles gently as she nudges sophia's knee with her own.

the gentle smile that spreads across sophia's face at the contact makes it worth it.
