“oh!” she exclaims, eyes widening. “no, it’s no trouble. really.” bada reassures him. “i was just teasing you, i’m sorry,” she tells him, worried that he thought she was genuinely upset at his tardiness.
“weren’t you telling me not too long ago they were supposed to hire some more people?” she frowns as she asks the question. “i’m sorry you have to deal with that, i can’t imagine it’s fun,” bada says with a sigh before they start walking towards the market. truthfully, she doesn’t know what it’s like to have an unreliable colleague. she’s never worked retail or food-service, instead deciding to go into business with her family. though her parents would have supported her choice regardless, she enjoys making art and wouldn’t have it any other way.
“can i be honest?” she looks up at him as they walk. “i’m not sure when the last time it was that we attended together. i know i’m here every year,” bada chuckles. “but i can’t remember if i had any spare time to walk the market. if i did, though, you would have been invited.”
bada’s eyes leave his face and she stares off at the stalls surrounding them, trying to see if anything catches her eyes. “as i get older, i feel like time is just racing by; the years blurring together.” she sighs but shakes her head right after. “but let’s not dwell on that, not the right time,” she says with a short laugh.
“i want fish cakes for sure,” she gets back on topic. “but i don’t think that will be enough to fill me up. is there anything in particular that you want to eat?” bada asks him.
".....Some sort of noodle, for sure." Danny confirms, as his stomach growls, hopefully not to the point where Bada could hear. "We're always hiring. So if you're looking for a job..." He trails off into a spiel that Bada has heard many times before, knowing she would kindly decline. his eyes smile into small creases, as he looks above the small crowd to survey the possible stalls. "That dessert there looks great, but I want to save that for after we actually eat something more filling and savoury first. Wow." He catches himself, a bit shocked. "I'm starting to sound like my parents."
If they found anything nice and less perishable, he might bring it home for them too, considering they likely wouldn't be coming out to these style of market events. His father often stated it was too crowded for the likes of him now, but seriously, it wasn't that bad. "Maybe the age has caught up with us. It's that weird... Weird bit where we go from feeling like kids one moment then overgrown kids the next. Working already makes me wonder when we get to the next stage of grandparent-hood and retirement is. But I bet you have a different perspective since you're actually doing something you like, right?"
Stopping suddenly, Danny holds Bada by the shoulders as he tries to point her in the direction of a specific stall. "A fishcake stall right next to a dumpling one." And a weird tea one, but maybe that could be an afterthought. He wasn't completely sold on the wintermelon flavour the stall seemed to focus on and it caused his nose to crinkle. "Yes, no, maybe so?"
