I’ve been a fan of Studio Ghibli since I was 7 years old. Granted I haven’t seen a lot of their films, but Spirited Away is easily one of my top favorite movies of all time. So to hear that Studio Ghibli is having a festival, showing all of their movies in theaters this year had me ecstatic. I went to see Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and it was an interesting movie. My main takeaway though was that it felt like a huge “make love not war” PSA. Nausicaä is against violence and does her best to not only live amongst the all consuming poisonous forest and its insects. But she tries to understand it and empathizes with its creatures. And while the rest of what’s left of humanity is battling each other, trying to use violence to solve its problems, Nausicaä is using a peaceful approach. And in the end it takes her sacrificing her own life, that saves everyone.
I liked the pacing of the movie, it wasn’t rushed and they did a great job with telling this story. It was surprising to learn that this is an 80’s movie. I thought that with that level of animation, it’d be a 90’s movie. I did have one complaint though. How did her dress suddenly change from red to blue??? I understand that the prophecy said that a man in blue would save humanity and everything, but my girl dies in red and is suddenly resurrected in blue?????? And the ending was pretty hilarious. She saves everyone and the movie immediately cuts out haha!! That was super unexpected. Ultimately, this was a fun movie and I can’t wait to see another Studio Ghibli film in theaters this summer!
