When I was 6 or 7 someone gave me a book on the five senses that included some optical illusions pictures and games. That book changed everything. I remember carrying it around as a priest would carry his bible, so much so that whenever we played with my sister, I had to integrate it, to make it part of the game. Sometimes it was a high-tech computer, others it was the answer to decipher a code, or the directions to get to a mystery mountain. In any case, it was more than just a book. 

Over time, I grew out of the play pretend games, and the book went to sleep on a bookshelf. Never forgotten, but with no practical purpose to fulfill.

Years after that I discovered a painter whose works, not surprisingly, had as big an effect on me as my old book on senses–Mr. M.C. Escher.

In many of his paintings I found forms that reminded me of a particular figure that had seized my attention in my book when I was little.
