Okay, let me actually start this thread by mentioning such an underrated character from Avatar: Mai
So Zuko left the fire nation and dumped her (albeit for a definitely good and understandable reason). Regardless of that, Mai was still willing to save him from sinking into the boiling lake — even if it meant any of these:
Going against the fire nation, in which she herself was raised
Going against her uncle, since he was the prison warden
Betraying Azula
Risking imprisonment
Or possibly even getting killed by Azula
And let’s not forget about this quote of hers (which is absolutely my favorite line from Mai in the entire series)!:

What I don’t get is why during all the episodes where Katara tries to push Aang one way or another, either emotionally (The Serpent’s Pass) or in his choices (The Avatar State), she’s considered a loving friend who’s just trying to protect Aang from himself. While in the one instance where Aang tries to pull her back from acting on rage, he gets labeled an ass who’s just moralizing at her. Granted, in the episodes where Katara is giving advice, Zuko is nowhere to be found and doesn’t really benefit from any argument against her, so I guess there’s always that to consider.
I mean, if you get down to the truth, Katara has no place lecturing Aang about whether to use the Avatar State or not. She’s not the Avatar. It’s really not her job or burden to worry about the responsibility of letting the war drag on. People would never blame HER for it, as they would the Avatar. She cannot relate to that struggle of his in any significant way at all. But she disapproves anyway and lets him know it because she honestly feels scared for Aang and is afraid of what the experience will do to him. And it’s completely understandable that she would try her very best to stop him from doing something she believes will be destructive and hurtful to him.
And in The Serpent’s Pass, she offers multiple platitudes about hope and tries to get him to seek comfort with her, yet she doesn’t have any personal experience that relates to Aang’s current situation. Why is she telling him to be hopeful when he just lost the very last link to his dead people? That’s something she’ll never fully understand, but despite that, she’s still allowed to worry about Aang because she cares about him.
So why is it that when Aang tries to help her in the same way, through feelings that he himself went through in The Desert and personally felt enormous guilt over, he isn’t just being good friend trying to stop someone he cares about from doing a bad thing, he’s an ass? And we KNOW that Katara’s rage was destructive and bad for her. We saw her do something that, just a few episodes ago, she vehemently hated and disapproved of. By the end of the episode, there’s no doubt at all that revenge wasn’t the answer for her. But somehow, this is the episode that Aang gets the most ridiculous hate on. (I know I’m staring right at the reason and it’s name is Zuko)
I recently saw someone say that Katara wouldn’t love or even like Aang as much if he wasn’t the avatar. This is an opinion I’ve seen before but - did the people that think this even see the first two episodes?
Katara takes Aang at his word when he says he never met the avatar. However, she still decides to accept his invitation to travel across the world to learn waterbending from a master and banishes herself from her own tribe in response to Aang being banished. Those two were ride or die for each other from the start - avatar or no avatar.
Like legit, she always saw AND LOVED Aang as just him — Aang
Izuocha might actually be my #1 favorite ship shonen anime at this point!
