For ornamental purposes! These versions of the Martians are so very much more cultural than the ones depicted in the book. As I remember, (it's been a while, cut me a break.) the cockpit's outer armour is designed in the visage of the Martians themselves. Think of it like an intimidation factor for what was initially other warring Martians, now used against the British.

There are other variations to these 'helmets,' but this angry Martian design was the only one I figured out.
