 -  exhilerated,  exuberant,  utterly  content.  that's  when  he  spots  a  face  he'd  recognise  in  any  crowd,  instantly.  a  disbelieving  scoff,  corners  of  his  lips  twist  into  a  grin,  he  makes  his  way  over  to  the  bar  not  a  moment  later.  faces  before  him,  they  might've  all  kept  jack  harkness  at  arm's  length.  but  those  'unapproachable  unpredictable  enigma  that  is  the  doctor'  times,  those  were  over.  a  quick  sign  to  the  barkeep,  "  i'll  have  whatever  the  gentleman's  having  "  ,  he  pushes  some  credits  across  the  counter  (  '  keep  'em  coming  '  )  and  settles  on  the  stool  next  to  jack.  "  well,  i  reckoned  you  were  gonna  flirt  with  me,  anyhow  "  tongue  in  teeth  smile,  he  raises  his  glass  in  cheers,  does  his  best  to  surpress  his  natural  reaction  to  jack's  choice  of  liquor  (  there  might  be  some  tears  in  his  eyes,  luckily  the  venue's  dark  enough  to  hide  that,  right  ?  )  "  can't  complain,  captain.  can't  complain.  "  and  he  really,  really  can't  for  once,  and  isn't  that  just  great  ?  "  not  yet,  at  least.  new  face,  so  who  knows  what's  to  come.  "  a  shrug,  another  tentative  sip.  "  how  'bout  you,  huh  ?  anything  new  with  you  ?  "

HE  whips  around,  disbelieving  frown  has  his  eyebrows  both  drawn  together  but  also  seemingly  pulled  up  to  high  heavens  "  excuse  me  ?  as  if  waitrose  isn't  the  most  whimsical  of  supermarket  chains  in  the  greater  u.k.  area  ?  "  now,  this  might  be  a  tad  embarrassing  (  you  know,  if  he  was  anyone  but  this  extremely  cool  and  suave  alien  who  travels  through  time  and  space  )  but  he  really  really  enjoys  going  grocery  shopping  on  earth.  there's  just  something  about  it  !  all  the  variety  of  products,  the  act  of  pushing  the  little  cart  around,  asking  for  recommendations  for  something  mundane  as  yoghurt  (  although  to  him  it  is  anything  but  mundane  -  oh,  he  just  loves  humans,  he  does  !  )  plus,  doing  a  big  shop  every  now  and  then  ensures  the  tardis  fridge  is  always  stocked  with  some  bits  and  pieces.  nibbles.  for  ruby,  or  for  him  -  lately  he's  really  been  appreciating  a  midnight  chocolate  date  !  "  just  look  around  -  i  mean,  the  colours  !  the  ...  spectacle  !  "  something  in  his  eyes  lights  up,  he  pushes  his  little  trolley  round  the  corner.  "  i  mean,  look  -  you  can  drink  coffee  while  you're  doin'  your  shopping  !  and  they  even  have  an  artisan  bakery  next  to  the  coffee  station  !  "  now,  he  could  go  into  the  detail  why  the  vibe  was  better  in  waitrose  than  a  sainsbury's  (  too  much  staff  at  the  self  checkout,  makes  him  so  nervous  he  accidentally  scans  a  net  of  oranges  as  a  pound  of  flour  )  or  an  m&s  (  too  posh  -  too  much  going  on  ),  or  why  the  vibes  at  a  tesco  express  are  still  a  bit  more  fun,  but  he  refrains.  rolls  his  eyes  instead.  "  oh,  you  mean  the  colosseum  that  was  used  as  an  arena  to  watch  people  fight  to  the  death  ?  or  the  amusement  parks  where,  if  there's  one  bolt  out  of  place,  you're  riding  into  your  demise  ?  last  time  i  checked,  the  dictionary  didn't  define  '  whimsy  '  as  '  lethal  '.  "  the  doctor  throws  him  a  look,  proceeds  to  push  his  cart  further  along  the  aisles.  maybe  if  he  stalls  long  enough,  he  can  get  his  shopping  all  done  before  they  break  out  into  a  full-blown  argument.  "  the  point  of  being  here  is  that  i  need  goods  and  services  that  this  establishment  provides  "  a  sickeningly  sweet  and  fake  smile,  he  grabs  four  jars  of  strawberry  jam.  "  the  point  of  you  being  here,  however,  is  non-existant  .  according  to  reason,  you  shouldn't  be  anywhere,  ever  again.  but  oh,  who  am  i  to  question  the  basic  laws  of  the  universe,  huh  ?  "

IT'S  an  awfully  slow  turn  of  his  head  to  the  side,  eyes  first  and  slightly  narrowed  (  side-eye  or  something,  ain't  that  what  the  kids  call  it  these  days  ?  )  tongue  pressed  to  the  roof  of  his  mouth,  he  gives  the  other  a  look  -  one  mostly  unidentifiable.  one  that  may  read  '  i'm  not  angry,  just  disappointed  ',  he's  not  quite  sure.  but  there's  something  brewing  inside  him,  threatening  to  bubble  to  the  surface,  but  he  manages  to  keep  it  down,  a  few  deep  steadying  breaths.  "  WHAT.  is  your  problem  ?  "  brows  pulled  up  high,  oh,  he's  fed  up  "  if  earth  isn't  '  whimsy  '  enough  for  you  -  whatever  the  hell  that  means  -  then  go  somewhere  else  ?  i  happen  to  find  it  unbelievably  whimsy  -  like,  off  the  charts.  like  WOW.  "  he  honest  to  god  harrumphs,  considers  leaving  but  turns  around  at  the  last  moment  :  "  and  quit  followin'  me  !  "

"if i let you in, do timelines explode and you like ... explode, or something?" it's mostly a joke because she's already stepped aside and is holding the front door open. "doesn't matter, he's not here, so you can't explode timelines in my kitchen or anything." she looks him up and down, head tilted to the side, concern written across her face. "are you in trouble?"

A  frown,  he  actually  considers  the  possiblity  for  a  second  -  then  decides  that,  either  way,  it's  worth  the  risk,  gladly  stepping  in.  "  well,  if  it  makes  you  feel  better  i  could  pop  'round  to  the  garage  or  something  -  you  know,  so  it's  not  as  much  of  a  mess  to  clean  up  if  timelines  do  explode  "  tongue  in  teeth  smile,  as  much  as  he'd  like  to  mess  with  her,  he  can't  stay  serious,  not  when  the  sight  of  her  is  a  sheer  delight.  "  oh,  no  !  no,  no,  don't  worry,  not  in  trouble.  everything  a-okay.  ",  he  reassures  her  with  a  nod  -  then  brows  knit  together,  mouth  falls  open,  a  slightly  offended  scoff  (  all  in  jest,  obviously  ).  "  why,  do  i  have  to  have  mucked  something  up  to  come  and  visit  ?  one  doctor  around  enough  to  fill  your  quota  ?  "  he  couldn't  even  be  mad  at  that,  frown  gives  way  for  a  musing  look,  a  shrug.  "  honestly,  that'd  be  fair  enough.  we  sure  are  a  handful.  "
