Okay, as much as I love Rocky extending Grace's life without telling him, consider: Rocky *does* tell Grace, Grace just then somehow manages to like. Horrendously misinterpret what the treatment is actually for. Like.

Okay hot take. I donāt think Martin is actually any more manipulative than like, the average person. I think the only reason it gets emphasized so much as a defining character trait is because his pulling one over on Peter contrasts his demeanor when we met him quite a bit. That and his fawning behavior sometimes gets reframed as being inherently manipulative which is not a framing that I feel especially comfortable with. All in all if you actually try to take each of the individual elements that are making Martin āmanipulativeā youāre going to end up having to throw social behaviors in there that probably apply to most of the cast otherwise youāre exhibiting double standards. Also I donāt think lying for self preservation against an actual evil entity makes you inherently manipulative (not any more manipulative than people are generally encouraged to be in their average job interview if they want even a sliver of a chance at getting hired) and ALSO I donāt think it would even take someone whoās especially skilled at manipulation to trick that old ass man who serves the fear god of disassociation anyhow.
Like this isnāt about whether or not you consider āmanipulativeā to be an inherently negative descriptor or you are using it neutrally or whatever I just think we genuinely cannot apply it to Martin as an especially strong defining character trait without stretching our definition of what the word means to the extent that it becomes a blanket that covers half of the other characters too. I just feel like itās leaned on way too heavily in fanonization compared to the his actual actions. It kinda seems like the fandom just decided Martin was a manipulative gaslight gatekeep girlboss at some point and started working backwards to paint all of his behavior as being more deceptive than it actually is. I also tend to believe that people tend to have double standards about what behavior they consider to be manipulative and what behavior they consider ānormalā and to whom they apply it to, just in general.
And to be clear I think discussing Martinās negative traits along with his positive ones is like vital to enjoying him as a complete character same as any other character, I just feel like this particular term is overused and it kinda obfuscates his actual traits and actions. Aaaall Iām saying is I think even if you could argue that the word isnāt entirely inaccurate to describe him with I think weāve gotten to the point where itās no longer actually aiding us in analyzing his character and we will do better to leave it behind for new descriptors. In my opinion!! I donāt actually have any issue with people who choose to describe him that way and if you want to then you should continue to do so bc I donāt make the rules, I just wanted to share my personal perspective on it.
usually when i think about martin's āmanipulativeā tendencies i think of them as masking instead. hiding what you really are, and the skills that develop as a result from that lie. tbh i'm not making a lotta sense rn š
mostly i just think martin uses masking and lying about himself as a defense mechanism. yeah it technically falls under manipulation. but he's not always using these skills to pull one over someone, the thing with peter was a special case. he's usually using them to seem like he's not a threat, esp in the earlier seasons. in the earlier seasons he's martin, the sweet bumbling tea boy who, ultimately, people don't pay too much attention to because he makes it so.
