idk idk the fact that Jacques describes marriage as "the only solution of any girl’s life" when not one of the female characters in the play is happy in her marriage is sooo
like they're all unhappy and actively escaping their marriage through affairs—Madame d'Aiguines, Françoise, even presumably Monsieur de Montcel's mistress who's only mentioned in passing
and Jacques knows this! he's aware of all these failed marriages at one point or another in the play, and yet!! despite constant evidence that the married women around him are all miserable, despite d'Aiguines explicitly telling Jacques that marrying Irene is a terrible idea, he still believes that he and Irene can be the exception, so much so that he repeatedly ignores his better judgement to help her
...and then of course, "the only solution" ends up not solving anything at all—if anything it just makes it all worse for both of them
maybe the point Bourdet was trying to make is that marrying a lesbian results in misery, but frankly, it just ends up feeling like the problem here is that women are pressured to get married even when it's not in their best interest
